which one do you choose?
i think i would have to go for zuma
It is such a beautiful record.
My close second is On The Beach, an amazing, intense record but a bit overwhelming
don't think i could handle never hearing cortez again
it was the first one I heard, completely at random as I hadn't even really heard of Neil Young at the time. I was about 14 and inherited my Dad's record deck, he only had a 7" of Mull of Kintyre and a few Shadows LPs so I went to a local second hand shop to buy a few records. I read some recommendations in something like Q Magazine (I think it was Bernard Butler's top records of all time or something?) and this was one of them. So glad it was there and that it was a few quid in the second hand shop. Still have it, still love it.
Going to try it now. You better be right cat_race.
it just gets better and better as it goes on as well
Favourite tracks were 'Pardon My Heart' and 'Cortez The Killer'. I wouldn't put it at the top of his albums (probably After The Goldrush if I had to choose), but it would provide a good representation of his strengths.
there's a slint cover of cortez knocking about on youtube in case you're a fan
I hear ya.
But yeah there would be a lot to miss if you only had one
The Best Of Neil Young
Bob Dylan could have been
I listen to it all the time anyways
Stone cold fucking masterpiece
never to listen to Ambulance Blues again?
because even though his earlier stuff is probably better, this was the album which I heard coming up my through the floorboards every night when I was a kid.
Used to go proper mental dancing about on my bed when Old King came on (even though it's easily the worst track on the album), cue being told off at about the same time every night.
Choosing between Harvest/After the Goldrush/On The Beach for second is pretty much impossible.
