dont_fart [Edit] [Delete] 23 replies 14:20, 13 May '14

Or, as people here like to call them, 'Thom Yorke and teh Radioheads' (for reasons I honestly don't know and probably never will).

I'll start:

1. The Tourist
2. Let Down
3. No Surprises
4. Motion Picture Soundtrack
5. Subterranean Homesick Alien
6. Airbag
7. Morning Bell
8. Climbing Up the Walls
9. Optimistic
10. How to Disappear Completely
11. The National Anthem
12. Kid A
13. Planet Telex
14. Everything in Its Right Place
15. Bullet Proof... I Wish I Was
16. The Bends
17. Bones
18. Black Star
19. 2 + 2 = 5
20. Sail to the Moon
21. Paranoid Android
22. Pyramid Song
23. A Wolf at the Door
24. Reckoner
25. Scatterbrain
26. Dollars and Cents
27. Go to Sleep
28. All I Need
29. I Might Be Wrong
30. Myxomatosis

Casualties: Anyone Can Play Guitar, I Can't, Vegetable, Sit Down. Stand Up., Where You End and I Begin and House of Cards.

You can just do a top 10 or 20 instead if you want.

    • you do list Subterranean Homesick Alien far too high though

      Antelope @Antelope | 13 May '14, 14:49 | X
      JohnM this'd this
      • And Idioteque far too not in the list.

        JohnM @Antelope | 13 May '14, 15:25 | X
        • oh bollocks, I thought I included it.

not one of my favourites though. If I could redo my list I'd have it at #24.

      • yeah I've always had a thing about that song. I think it's gorgeous.

I'll explain what I mean, because I want people to see the beauty that I see in that song. My terminology with instruments is crap though.

Half way through the song (between 2:00 and 2:10) there's a beautiful, tropical keyboard sound, similar to the piano that appears in Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here', but better.

After Thom sings 'take me on board their beautiful ship/showing the world I love to sing', between 2:29 and 2:32 there's a BEAUTIFUL, aquatic, echoing ambient sound that reminds me of Brian Eno.

        Then there's:

'I'd tell of my friends but they'd never believe me/
They'd think that I've finally lost it completely/
I'd show them the stars, and the meaning of life/
They'd shut me away, but I'd be alright/'

Amazing electronic sound effects occur during those lyrics, sounding a bit like Squarepusher's 'Hard Normal Daddy'. Finally, 2:52 to 3:00 (when Thom sings 'shut me away........but I'd be alright) is one of the most beautiful, goose-pimple-inducing few seconds in music I've ever heard. Again, it's sounds aquatic, and haunting, like something underwater in an artificial ocean that's clumsily rising to the top, causing sexy ripples to form on the surface.

And the last 15 seconds seconds are also breathtaking. I don't know why, but to me it's the sound of a day in the life of someone at home living in American suburbia (like in American Beauty).

        dont_fart @Antelope | 13 May '14, 16:35 | X
    • ah man I should've included Talk Show Host

      and Bishop's Robes.

  • once upon a time

this board was one radiohead thread after another. some involved greater than signs to rate albums and tracks, like this one could have but you didn't because you missed a trick. negative opinions of radiohead would often be met by po-faced, defensive scorn. it was a shit time to be alive.

unrelatedly, this happened because as mentioned radiohead fans are so ready to defend them, they can't even spot an obvious wind up when it's delivered as a forced suppository: http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4324362#r6561758 then other similar things like this happened: http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4442727#r7918744 and this http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4442675#r7917237 which were funny because
    a) what i mentioned before about radiohead fans being a bunch of knobbers
    b) the fact that what radioheaders like least is the song the creep as it was before they were all clever and the best band in the history blah blah blah yawn.

shouldn't be funny anymore but every now and then you still get a biter.
