I had tickets to the first* White Stripes London gig but I couldn't go for reasons I can't remember. Would have liked to have seen that.
*it might not have been their very first ever, but it was around the release of De Stijl, iirc
Sub thread gigs you've been to that in the future people will post in a 'best gig you've never been to' thread, for me end of the road 2008
Two of my friends went and said they were great but the place was half empty (probably a couple of hundred people)
It was literally a week or so after the debut album came out and I hadn't heard it yet. By November they were playing to 7000 people at Ally Pally.
the right answer
to see them at the Irish Centre (Birmingham) the week the debut album came out. Gig Sold Out and local paper claimed they were the new Jimi Hendrix (never sure how they worked that out). I really should have gone to that gig.
Deafheaven at Stereo last year
as a result I wasn't allowed to go to any of the gigs I had lined up, including Bob Dylan and Love (it was the year before Arthur Lee died). In retrospect, those concerts probably wouldn't have been all that astonishing but at the time it was fucking heartbreaking.
It was an all-time classic. Just sayin'.
Fear Before The March of Flames/The Bled/Alexisonfire
Headlined by Battles and Harmonia. The ine in 2007 was Mogwai and SunnO))). They were both great (although the two times I've seem Dalek they haven't been all that good).
but I really should've gone to the Mike Patton/Melvins ATP
to see Guided By Voices, despite being completely obsessed with them. Didn't think I'd get into the venue, and figured there'd be lots more opportunity. Eleven years on, they haven't come over since.
hence managed to miss that Release The Bats lineup a few years ago with Liquid Liquid, Polvo, Factory Floor, Beak and Tweak Bird.
not at the festival - on holiday with me nan and grandad
Luoisiana(?) in Bristol in '01 cos i'd have hugely pissed off an irate girlfriend at the time. two mates went and it was great obvs.
Were supposed to be playing Wellington; cancelled the day we went to buy our tickets due to poor sales. Never got to see them :(
Bowie in the Astoria in 2000 or so. I bought a ticket off a tout, turned out to be fake. Other people managed to buy real tickets off other touts.
The Flaming Lips / Mogwai / Jape / Oppenheimer
in 2008. Still regret it even though I've seen them all separately since.
headlining Glastonbury probably.
but at the time I was living in Bedford and thought this sort of thing was commonplace (see also Galaxie 500 playing Winkles nightclub).
When before the gig, Morrissey released a dove of peace in the air in the national costume of every country he'd upset
