obvious that she's a big fan of japanese culture and is celebrating it in song
more power to her
I dunno, it just looks like a surface level stereotyping and lumping J-pop and K-pop cliches together in a way which is maybe a little racist.
It reminded me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hr3wcWpTGtI
looks really sad in the black and white bits when she's supposed to be smiling.
fucking awful shite there innit but inner 13 year old me still fancies her, always will probably, never surrender.
teenage me was very thankful for it's existence
can make millions by still acting like a flippant pre-teen who Hot Topic would target the hell out of. She even has her line of clothing. One day her white tank top and plaid tie will be hung from the rafters.
She was the first girl I proper fancied. Jesus 29. I'm 22. That means, wait. Let Go was the best thing ever when I was 11. That means she was 18? Yay I can do maths.
they were probably the pretentious, drama school sorts who never quite made the grade
in his log cabin and then thinking "shit I was meant to record and produce my critically acclaimed debut album but I've spent the best part of a year and a half in this log cabin just miming to Nickelback next to this maggot-infested sofa I found on the outskirts of this bit of woodland, it'll be well embarrassing if I go home with nothing to show for it but this" and then knocking out his critically acclaimed debut album before his Domino's order arrives
It's like a non-Art version of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uaHSB0pP7M
I know it's unintentional, but this video really highlights the innate beauty of the European juxtaposed with the Oriental. It's hard not to notice
is the impression I got from watching Avril in the video.
the whole 'taken down off youtube!!!' thing is so contrived.
Song is hilariously shit. In a good way though I guess.
Did people get their backs up when Gwen Stefani started having Harajuku girls in all her videos? Can't remember. Seems a bit silly to get 'offended' by this tbh.
there have been lots of academic essays and serious articles written on gwen's cultural appropriation (japanese, native american, south asia, african american)
mainstream media seems to be more clued up on it and making comparisons now
can't really be bothered to put much effort into this because a quick google is all you need to do if you're interested
Amazing how many people are falling foul of shit like this at the moment. I guess you could be cynical and just assume they're doing it on purpose just to get more coverage.
I was really annoyed at the new Sky Ferreira vid, had to turn it off, thought she was better than that but then again I think the strength of the album has kind of swayed and made me forget that she's a bit of an idiot all told.
Although at the time of Gwen Stefani doing it, there did seem to be a genuine interest in the fashion world and from Stefani herself for the whole FRUiTS/harajuku thing and, unless I'm remembering wrongly, none of her videos indulged in the wider cultural stereotyping seen in the Lavigne video.
it's pretty odd that Stefani/her people didn't allow the Harajuku girls to speak in public. They were basically Stefani's accessories who were given a meaningless label and told what to wear
because a lot of the fashionistas were doing the same kind of thing, and it hadn't been seen in pop-culture for quite a while.
Didn't Stefani claim that the reason they were silent was because they were a figment of her imagination?
I know Margaret Cho and a few others had something to say about it but largely it seems people saw it as marketing for the brand/'music experience.' Apparently the imagination bit was her justification; her perception of the situation seems pretty naive, and I'm not sure she intentionally meant to degrade anyone, but it's odd to have contractually obligated human pets. There's a decent article about it on Salon: http://www.salon.com/2005/04/09/geisha_2/
I mean absolute fucking terrible, terrible, pop-tourism.
think I saw something about people being radged off with Katy Perry because she has a campy Ancient Egyptian style video, so I guess people will get mad at anything
this is a part of western culture
therefore the japanese should love this
being like the flashback of Homer's childhood in the Simpsons when Abe just sits in a vest watching American football, drinking beer and complaining about sideburns
she has fat cheeks
I don't believe anyone in this thread who's saying they like it.
Absolute shite. SHITE.
she's all srs now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCQ0JBRJpFo
Avril Lavigne music videos definitely shouldn't
That last video I saw, with her and the woman from The Wonder Years, was pretty incredible. I don't recall if the music was remotely good.
"Gritty Kitty ain't so pretty, but it's really thick
It fills my cat box oh so snug, it always does the trick
I like to rub it on my toes and squish and squish and squish
It ne'er offends my tender nose, like a smelly fish
Its texture is a joy to me, it's just as smooth as silk
It makes my little whiskers twitch, it stays crunchy even in milk
I may not be the president, I may not be the pope
But as long as I have Gritty Kitty, I shall never mope."
Cos the one I just saw had here dancing around in a sweet shop with some Japanese background dancers.
still love her though
