Viet Cong (featuring members of Women)
Pitchfork have just done a 'Rising' feature on the band Viet Cong, a band that includes former Women members, Matt Flegel and Michael Wallace. The embedded tracks sound excellent. Reissue of a tour cassette and an album out later in the year according to the article.
that cassette was really really great
was v happy to see coverage up on the site today
S/T to be released on January 20, 2015
and has already leaked.
If there is a 2015 album that deserves to enter in any 2014 year-end list is this one.
yeah, it would place pretty high up if we could include leaks in our year end lists.
these guys aren't great at band names, are they?
DIS won't let me ^This
So here's a ^This
Continental Shelf is a great single.
Starting to get some plays on 6 Music, I notice.
I've been listening to the cassette on Spotify all morning
it's really great!

Static Wall doesn't half remind me of a Deerhunter song,
can't quite place it though?
Anyway, Viet Cong are over here in Feb
4 - Oslo, London UK.
5 - Deaf Institute, Manchester UK.
6 - Broadcast, Glasgow UK
7 - Brudenell Social, Leeds UK.
8 - Green Door Store, Brighton UK.**
i've got my tickets
think i listened to them a bit over the summer
seemed ok but nothing particularly special
the Cassette EP (which was what was released around that time) is pretty good, but apparently they're outtakes of the album that just leaked (and is due in January). I think album is much better and more experimental.
The album is much better than "Cassette"
This is out in a couple weeks
!
new song sounds a bit like interpol?

I miss Women
That new song is very Wolf Parade.
saw them supporting Ought at the Scala
(amazing show)
the album is really great i think. took a couple tracks to get into it on first listen but its dope, wolf parade/deerhunter comparisons very apt. that last song 'death' especially. guitar tones all over the album are pretty remarkable
Album out today. Been added to Field Day (Sun)
(and Primavera ???)
it's really good

Nice one
This is way more synthy and accessible than I was expecting from what I'd read about the band.
Really enjoying it, will definitely try and get to the Brighton date
First indie rock record I've been *really* into in fucking ages
Last year was an absolute shocker, in particular, but this one is already off to a more promising start.
Did you listen to the Ought record from last year?
I reckon there's a good chance you'll like that if you like this.
I loved that record for about a week, complete opposite of a grower
You're the opposite of a grower
Yeah, I like it, and the EP
and the latest Cloud Nothings album got a lot of spins... This Viet Cong is a cut above both of those though.
Apart from that, most of the guitar music I've been into has been more psychy. Admittedly, I spend way less time searching for/listening to new indie rock recently.
Currently downloading this record
i like this a lot
I bought this on Monday.
First play - yeah. Second play - oh yeah. Death is particularly good.
Enjoying this album...
Just went to buy tickets for their Oslo show and it's sold out :(
Sunday trip to brighton?
I'm going to Brighton this weekend actually
Not necessarily a reason not to visit a couple of weeks later of course...
they're also playing a lunchtime instore at Rough Trade East that day
I'm planning to go to both
Pitchfork like it:
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/20086-viet-cong/
they generally (and especially) like everything that landed in their Rising section
http://pitchfork.com/features/rising/9353-viet-cong/
I'm rooting for them to do the same thing for the post-punkers Institute.
Death is pretty wow.
Like, I listen to music in one ear at work and normally it fades into the background
as I concentrate on other stuff, no matter how good the music is. This song has made me take notice at several points. Spectacular.
It's by far the best track on the album.
this album man
<3
bloody hell this is good
haven't heard VC yet but
I pulled out "public strain" by women. That one's pretty good! I think I only played it once, but I've certainly heard worse.
Lived with this for a week now
and man it is good. I like public strain, but I LOVE Viet Cong.
Anyone going to the London gig(s) tomorrow ?
I'd be interested in hearing a report. Seeing them up north later in the week.
going to the Rough Trade one
having failed to be convinced by the album so far (I know, I know), I want to see what the live show is like
Songkick says the RTE lung
*lunchtime show is cancelled
although it's still on the RTE website
Thanks for the heads up
gonna take a chance unless the band or RTE say anything about a cancellation
any one got any spares for tonight?
Also on this list please
i've got some so please offer to Spicer if any about^
Just called Rough Trade East, lunchtime show still going ahead.
yeah they were amazing last night
really looking forward to seeing them tomorrow night
Did they have any merch with them in London village ?
(Still haven't got around to buying the album).
I didn't actually see the stand
but there were people wandering around with new vinyl, so presumably yeah - when they supported Ought last November I think they actually had more merch than the headliners
yes, both records on vinyl and tape
plus some shirts
Penultimate song was new was it not?
Or were my ears deceiving me....
Scala tonight
Just seen that Algiers are supporting. Haven't listened to their album but remember it getting a fair bit of heat on here earlier in the year, will have to check it out.
Looking forward to this.
If anyone can post the stage times when they know them I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
Scala FB says:
Algiers 8:30
Viet Cong 9:30
topper cheers
They've amended the start time of Algiers
to 8:20pm on The Scala twitter and facebook page in case you want to see all of the support act.
Still rinsing the shit out of this album
So good.
One good song.
