excited for this one
As with that Cheatahs album, I'm not sure its original enough to keep me interested for more than a few listens, they seem to be one of those bands that wear their influences very prominently on their sleeves.
But Eagulls are great at what they do?
and being really derivative.
No judgement on Eargulls, it's just that the 'originality is everything' vs. 'originality is irrelevant' argument is irritating. Most guitar bands at the moment are pretty annoying cos they have a super derivative 90s aesthetic- it's not just their music but the whole look etc.
In comparison, if you take something like Destroyer's Kaputt, the actual music isn't original at all, it's pretty straightforward 80s indebted pop, but the way it's presented is really interesting and isn't just some sort of throwback thing. So I just think that it isn't really 'originality' of the music which is important, more the aim and outlook of the artist- bands who just wanna replicate other bands are pretty dull, but bands who use a particular genre or whatever to achieve a wider artistic goal can be very interesting.
That album is so utterly bland & generic, whereas the Eagulls one is bloody ace.
It's a shame they seem to despise women so much...
Bit of a 'problematic' letter:
GARY NUMAN WOULD KNOCK ALL OF YA DADS OUT!
but possibly more problematic are thisisfakediy's assertions that the music industry MIGHT favour wealthy individuals, which is the typical media refusal to fully acknowledge the fact that there is a class problem in British indie music. Probably because all those who actually work in new media are privileged and well connected as fuck.
name some band's they might be alluding too, dunno what beach bands are. i'm out of touch
there is no possible way that a band comprising of women could possibly be successful because, idk, they're talented and good at what they do.
much better than the singles suggested. Might buy.
it's such a shitty program
Nerve Endings is immense.
Mystery is one of my favourite Greg Sage tracks and they've nailed it whilst making it definitely theirs.
I need another ticket!
album is a total banger by the way
It's not very good (admittedly I had to turn it off after track 2). If nothing else, the vocals make it a real turn off.
It's a really decent album
Nerve Endings is such a massive tune
These lot are the only British guitar band I've liked since Wu Lyf (don't laugh!!)
Good but they need to really go for it. Potential is the word, they need to expaaaaand on that sound.
they are decent, saw them cold not knowing any of their songs (other than a few YouTube listens). Hardcore Robert Smith? The band sound like The Killers - 'Somebody Told Me' before the chorus hits but loads messier. Potential.
but I mean, I remember them when they were a hardcore band who like instantly got to support Fucked Up and IceAge, and they were brilliant back then and have already come along way from there
I saw them doing Possessed on Letterman & it reminded me of seeing the likes of Ride for the first time & just knowing they were going to be big. What with this & the Cloud Nothings album March is turning out to be bloody exciting.
they definitely have a lot of very strong press at the moment and are, like it or not, the band of the moment. Their next record will make or break them. If they embrace a 'poppier' sound they could be huge. If they veer towards the hardcore they will be cult-namecheckers and influence another band who will break-thru. Good luck to 'em.
and given their background, they're probably happy being the size they are now.
really impressed. In terms of energy its all about the vocalist rather than the rest of the band, think he's probably going to really connect with a lot of frustrated young lads.
For the blog jag (I know it irks some but intentions, as always are good). Some thoughts re the gig last night, etc...
a class set, more bands should play for 45 minutes.
Though I dunno, the men at the front were obviously dicks but they weren't too bad I guess, but the girls I was with weren't impressed, I suppose all that macho shit pretty much excludes women and the majority of men who aren't really into public displays of masculinity.
But I personally had a great time (obviously I'm not manly, I just made myself scarce), it's just nice to hear an album that I'm really into played live when it's just been released. I reaaaally hope they become very successful.
Yes, soon got barged out the way by the 'men'. They were OK; just enjoying themselves. Great gig. Shame the vocals were not loud enough.
but it's ok cuz they were great, cool venue too.
They're playing their homecoming record release show at the Brudenell tonight, where entry is £1.74 or £4 including a pint. Cannae say fairer than that eh
Isn't that standard Leeds prices anyway?!
sure why not
in Manchester last month, really enjoyed them after not hearing much before. Now listening to the album want to see them again!
what's funny about all these reviews (but this one makes it explicit without a hint of irony) is that all critics are pointing out how "that letter" shouldn't define the band (which is right) and yet by pointing it out all the time it IS inevitably defining them.
but agree with ModestGrouse comments re: Cheatahs. In fact, that was who I thought of when listening to the album.
Really enjoyed it. Been listening the album a lot today, really enjoying that as well
but I was just drunk. Can't be arsed with it.
then it all just sounds the same?
filing it under playlist band for the moment
About all the best bands (sounding the same).
couldn't really pick anything particular out of the lot to start with
maybe its their 'sound' not changing up a gear or something
or maybe i've been listening to too much chop&change mental shit recently
the intro to nerve endings is huge
hoping to get Bedford slot...
Think they're pretty tight. Don't particularly see why they're getting so much good press compared to dozens of other bands who sound the same, but the songs are very catchy and they seem like good lads.
