Annoyingly the Soundcloud for full listen of the first new track doesn't work anywhere, argh!
They never did break up though. They announced a hiatus because they were moving to different cities, and I think this album was recorded before various band members moved.
hopefully the stream will work by the time I get home to listen to it.
Here's the track: https://soundcloud.com/tellallyourfriendspr/thee-oh-sees-penetrating-eye/s-VnXmj
That artwork tho
this is rad. all that noise. all that attitude. badd ass.
really really like it. the artwork too.
been in the depths of an oh sees obsession for nearly 6 months now. not an exaggeration to say that they've taken up three quarters of my listening habits in that time. they're the weirdest and most exciting band i've heard in a very long time.
Bloody love it and bloody well love them too. What a band they are. Album out on Record Store Day, April 19th, my birthday. It's like John Dwyer is saying Happy Birthday Albert. God bless Thee Oh Sees.
Another new quality cut off the new album.
artwork's brilliant (as per).
the song itself didnt do much for me when i checked it out a couple of weeks ago, liking it a lot more today.
Really digging that vid! It makes the song much better. Reminds me a bit of the Yellow Submarine video.
Really psyched for the album.
great if you haven't already checked it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6JqmtqwZPU
should help the month go that bit quicker.
its good without being amazing.
think part of my problem is i was kinda praying for something leaning towards carrion/crawler or even warm slime: something really messy sounding and aggressive, and penetrating eye got my hopes up that that might happen.
id say it might be their most mellow since... island raiders even? still, got some really nice tracks judging from the first few listens.
its also dwyer + a completely new band (inc. mikal cronin) which i was surprised by cos i hadnt seen that mentioned anywhere before i got it on monday. i'd imagine the tour over this summer will be the usual lineup, right?
I agree with you. It's good, but I'm not blown away. I certainly rank Floating Coffin, Putrifiers II, Carrion Crawler, Castlemania, Help and The Master's Bedroom.
Will still buy the LP though.
* rank those above I meant to say.
i have 2 tiers of oh sees records
castlemania (despite having some of their best songs, dog poison, island raiders and this are in the second tier. they're enjoyable and have some great songs on, but they're inessential.
all the others are incredible. like perfect examples of stupidly particular sub-sub-genres. can't really separate any of them in terms of objective quality (if i absolutely had to, carrion crawler and floating coffin would be the two id argue) as they're all brilliant, just about personal taste or mood.
dwyer's got to be a genius. to be so familiar and affectionate with so many different styles and then have the talent to recreate them on such a regular and successful basis in a way totally his own is just absurd. putrifiers is the best album for showing this side of them- second half in particular: epic rock n roll on the title track, sixties lullabye on will we be scared, closest thing to 'the national anthem' i've ever heard except a damnsight weirder on lupine dominus, great garage pop on goodnight baby, sleepy ballad on wicked park.
love the fact im so excited by a band right now.
I'd say Purtifiers II is my favourite album. And I really rate Castlemania actually too.
I'm not TOO familiar with their earlier albums though (pre Master's Bedroom) as those are a bit too raw and lo-fi for my taste.
But yeah, since I few years ago I keep a really close eye on them and am excited about most of their new output.
I love a band that puts out a lot of new music without waiting a couple of years or whatever between releases.
Incredible sound. Really like Putrifiers II as well for a lighter mood. Floating Coffin is great but a bit patchy, not too big on Castlemania.
Hadn't realised they'd been going for so long! What's good before Master's bedroom?
Released on Spotify today. I think these are my favourite band at the moment.
