New! LIARS - Mess on a Mission

sean [Edit] [Delete] 93 replies 11:41, 13 January '14

They've cranked their electronic side a little bit more. Sounds like a really fun Battles or a more melodic Health or maybe just like Liars with laptops.
Added the track to our January Spotify playlist http://open.spotify.com/user/seaninsound/playlist/1YBNd0nC16Dt7WmzprSrT8

Couldn't find another legit version outside of Spotify (so it may get pulled if it was posted by accident) but looks like they played it live at Primavera https://soundcloud.com/dotsandashes/liars-mess-on-a-mission

  • I was really underwhelmed by the last album,

    but this is fucking brilliant!

It does have a bit of HEALTH but remixed HI-NRG.

I'm excited. Not quite raging horn though.

        • A fair amount of it, yeah, especially by their standards

but it's not representative of the whole thing, huge amount of dynamics and interesting as you'd expect from Liars. The three tracks above in addition to MOAM are probably the four most down-the-line on the album.

    • actually 2 of the tracks are good

      jazz-ballet @jazz-ballet | 13 Mar '14, 13:23 | X
    • Sisterworld's probably my least favourite album of theirs

thought it was the first that didn't really have anything new to offer and was treading water a bit. Made me think all their subsequent releases would just be progressively worse. I assumed with the radical step change of WIXIW that they'd started to realise the same themselves.

It's understandable a band like Liars being divisive in that way though, this is perhaps one of the least subtle Liars albums to date (even including the last few tracks). I also have an incredibly soft spot for everything they do, so am well aware that I'm probably over egging this.

      • when it came out it was the first time i'd listened to them properly

and it was easily my favourite album that year, even more than the gorillaz plastic beach album (that i was properly looking forward too). listened to the rest of their stuff hoping for more of the same so that's probably more to do with why i was disappointed, as opposed to them just being shite

        jazz-ballet @ma0sm | 13 Mar '14, 13:49 | X
        • Order of albums definitely makes a difference with that sort of thing

Which is probably why I don't have an objective view on it. My favourite Low album is C'mon which disgusts some people, but it was the first of theirs I'd heard so had that added introductory factor.

I'm surprised you didn't like the self-titled if you liked Sisterworld though, I thought they were very similar in many ways.

          ma0sm @jazz-ballet | 13 Mar '14, 14:00 | X
          • it was okay, the one before this new one was easily the worst

yeah it definitely makes a difference, its why i try to listen to albums in chronological order when i'm listening to bands for the first time

Low's worst records are better than the best albums by some other bands.

Liars are the same way. I never cared much for They Threw Us In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top, but even that was solid.

  • I am utterly shocked by the fauning reaction for this record

I saw them do most of these songs in Brighton, summer of last year. It was brilliant, though I have to caveat that by saying I was high/drunk possibly both.

I'm a long term Liars fan so really not bothered by an about turn or a change in sound but this record is just dull until 'Mess on a Mission,' the second half of the record is much more like it. They are soooooo much better than a steady 4/4.

I still love Liars and I'll be seeing them live when they come my way but I think they are getting too mucgh credit for quite a lazy, derivative record.

Am I in a minority of one in saying WIXIW was better?

    tea_segall | 18 Mar '14, 13:42 | X
    • In my mind

I look at the relationship between this one and WIXIW as Drums Not Dead was to They Were Wrong, So We Drowned. I liked WIXIW, it excited me in a way that I thought Liars weren't capable of doing anymore after Sisterworld (though I did really enjoy Sisterworld). I really enjoyed WIXIW, but found some of the production a little synth-plugin preset in terms of its production. This was part of its charm, particularly with the way in which the band were going about it (as talked about in that above article), but on extended listens it did more to excite me about the next steps than to reward my repeated listens.

The first half of this new album is incredibly immediate with some absolutely fantastic slow burners making up the latter half, and I can completely see why someone (particularly a Liars fan) would prefer WIXIW to Mess. However to me, Mess is an accomplished album regardless of who made it, what their backstory is or anything else that goes with it. I need no provisos with this album, it's great on multiple levels and am rewarded with more on each listen.

Ask me again in six months though, time will tell with this sort of thing.

      ma0sm @tea_segall | 18 Mar '14, 14:21 | X
    • Agree with all of this

but I'm not really shocked by it. It's a bangin' nu rave record that it's OK to like.
I was surprised by even how straightforward stuff like No 1 Against the Rush was with it's UN-TSS UN-TSS beat but this record takes to it a whole nother level of things I love them for not doing. WIXIW succeeded for me in being electro without sounding like a band who just went out and bought keyboards at their managers behest. For once they sound like they're trying to catch up to a trend rather than being a few miles in front and at a weird tangent to it.
It's not a bad record, it just doesn't sound like a Liars record to me. It's too easy or something.

      ethricdouble @tea_segall | 25 Mar '14, 10:00 | X
  • I was underwhelmed by WIXIW when it came out

by the sounds of it, much in the way that you are with this – sounded to me like sub-DND tracks and that everyone was just getting excited because they'd 'gone electronic'. Stuck with it and found it to be an incredible grower. I've taken to this one much more immediately but can tell that as I warm to the change in sound a bit more I'm going to get even more from it. I think what I love about Liars is that the style is always striking, for better or worse with everything they do, but the songs underneath are (assuming you generally like Liars) always really solid and consistent in their sneery oddball attitude.

  • I still don't know what the bloody hell I think of Liars

The only album of theirs I actually have in my collection is the self titled which I borrowed from a friend who wanted me to go along and see them. It's an album I love bits of and am completely nonplussed by other parts of (seem to remember really enjoying them live though) and that's pretty much been my reaction to listening to streams of every album they've done since.

Absolutely no bloody clue what to think of this one either - the most I can say is that they are consistent.

    Lambchops | 18 Mar '14, 19:57 | X
  • I think this new album is quite good eh?

Probably the most I've enjoyed listening to an album of their since DND. They've always struck me as a band that could easily go ELECTRONIK but XWIXWHATEVA almost didn't dip its toe in enough for my liking. Far superior to Scissorworld and S/T I reckon, though I've only had 4 or 5 listens so far

  • I've never *quite* got all the fuss around Liars

Always really enjoyed the odd track, but this is the first album I can really get behind. Great stuff, should be right up there at the end of the year. I love the fade-out bit in the middle of I'm No Gold.

  • I always check out new Liars

Because they always come across as one of the most interesting indie bands, then I listen to them... Because even if I didn't like the last one or the one before it or the one before it etc at least they do something different everytime so you may as well give them a go. But damn this sounds like that time in history no one wanted post Ed Banger and pre Nu Rave when a load of Australian bands didn't get the memo that it sounded like shit and was no fun.

Sounds immense though, especially after the plinky plonk Metronomy album I've been listening too. Did you know you pronounce WIXIW as 'Wish You' ?

I pay next to no notice to lyrics though, or maybe I just remebered wrong. Either way, I'll admit WIXIW didn't really float my boat. Mess is doing it for me, though.
