Talk about your favourite EPs of the year. Go!
the new Dean Wareham (ex-Galaxie 500) as I'm going to the gig tonight. His EP is very impressive; very Velvet Underground-esque.
DJ Rashad - Rollin' [Hyperdub]
Might be better than the damn wicked album Double Cup for Drums Please alone.
Murlo - Last Dance EP [Glacial Sounds]
Really bright winding bassline bubblin' glacial eski tropical grime playfulness.
Moon B - Entropic Feelings [Good Going]
Killer analogue synth boogie.
Archie Pelago - Sly Gazabo EP [Archie Pelago Music]
Jazz dance hybrid that doesn't sound like you'd think that would sound. Loads of fun, oozes quality.
Fuewa - Birth Place [Sonic Router]
Late night/early morning bright yet grimy beat tape melodic stuff.
Kingdom - Vertical XL [Fade To Mind]
Stripped back killer dance floor hybrids, features Kelela.
Aquarian Foundation - Language Of The Hand [Mood Hut]
Trippy analogue house, really retro, warm but bumps still.
Jam City - Club Constructions Vol.6 [Night Slugs]
Killer stripped back bright spaced out club cuts from Jam City, really focused tracky and fun.
Major Grave - Looking Forward [Sulk]
Bright gleaming grime, with melody for days on Slackks new label.
Rabit - Sun Showers [Diskotopia]
Stripped back to within an inch of its own life melodic psychedelic grime.
Bambooman - Hollowed [Sonic Router]
Bright summer leaning beat tape business.
Mssingno - EP [Goon Club Allstars]
Cut up vocal grime/cloud rap mashup material. Both intense and dreamy.
DJ Spider & Marshallito - Deadly Structures EP [The Trilogy Tapes]
Deep groove led sub-aquatic noisy NYC house cuts.
Bandshell - Casutic View [Liberation Technologies]
Odd as all hell grimy, machies trying to work out how to kill you quietly electronics.
DJ Nigga Fox - O Meu Estilo [Principe]
Bumping sidewinding groovey as all hell, how can you move to this and still stand up party tracks.
Rezzett - Rezzett EP [The Trilogy Tapes]
Really noisy submerged in noise techno music. Like a radio frequency destroying your favourite techno music.
Actress - Silver Cloud [WerkDiscs]
Awsome long deep tracky hypnotic tracks.
Mix Mup - After The Job [Hinge Finger]
Some killer bumping thug house business with a bashment bleepy thing and some melodic as all hell late night business.
Wen - Commotion EP [Keysound]
Deep bass grime influenced sub shaking UK hybrids.
Call Super - The Present Tense [Houndstooth] / Black Octagons [Houndstooth]
Two of the best things to come out on Houndstooth by some way. Really melodic proggy spaced out electronics that could kind of hit the dance floor but kind of not.
Mumdance & Logos - Genesis EP [Keysound]
Mad jungle leaning UK hybrids, hyped up cousin of Logos' album. In Reverse is like nothing else.
Slackk - Failed Gods [Local Action]
Quality grimy business, Silk Robes is something else, a kind of eski, melodic half time footwork hybrid.
Tuff Sherm - Burglar Loops [The Trilogy Tapes]
Odd as hell bumping Dro Carey. No one does it liek he does.
Pip Williams - Mode #7 [Brokntoys]
Quality retro looking electro dancefloor stuff.
Torus - Yard Sale [Sonic Router]
Offcuts of bumpin' bedroom beat tape stuff.
Laurel Halo - Behind The Green Door [Hyperdub]
Really groove led deep as all hell house Laurel Halo style. Tops the album for me.
Niagara - Ouro Oeste [Principe]
Spaced out disco meets analogue party jams.
Trade - Sheworks #005 [Work The Long Nights]
Bangin' Blawan meets Surgeon techno business.
The Analogue Cops - Partytodance EP [Fragil Musique]
Raw analogue housy techno cuts.
Florian Kupfer - Lifetrax [L.I.E.S.]
Twisted raw tape wared groovy heart wrenching warm hosue trax.
Terror Danjah & Champion - Sons Of Anarchy EP [Hyperdub]
Big room grime/funky hybrids, fun as all hell. Sounds like Bowser's castle getting invaded.
DVA - Mad Hatter EP [Hyperdub]
Twisted broken groove grimy funky UK business.
Prob a load more, I've forgoten and Burial's new one isn't even out yet.
FKA twigs, East India Youth, DJ Rashad and O'Messy Life. The new EP from The Fall is some of their best work in years, and I'm very excited for the Burial one as well.
Still need to hear the new Matthew E White and Autechre ones, which I trust wil be suitably great...
can't wait for a full record
Is it really worth it? I love the band, listen to them quiet a bit but new stuff... I felt the same about MBV this year too. But if it really is any good?
you probably won't enjoy it.
Otherwise, it's probably the weakest thing they've done, but not drastically so, which — considering that Pixies even at their weakest are still fucking great — isn't too heavy-handed a criticism.
Moodoid - s/t EP
psych-pop from the live guitar of Melody's Echo Chamber.
No Joy - Pastel and Pass Out
I find to be much more interesting than your standard "We bought Loveless, Psychocandy, and Souvlaki on the same record store trip; let's form a band!" Shoegaze, even if they're not entirely original themselves.
The Ghost List
knocked it out the park last year with Its the Arps, and he's done it again twice this year with Strandbar and Spiral. He seems to be shifting from Space Disco into Space Samba. And I am loving it. An album had better surface in 2014.
Also worth mentioning his collab with Lindstrøm this year; the berserk Lanzarote (although it's not really an EP. Shhh).
Also Huerco S - untitled
And the demdike stare test pressings
But mainly GvsB
Annie - The A&R
Rrose - Monad XVI
Merchandise - Totale Nite
Inigo Kennedy - Catheral
Meesha - Solar
Vertige - Retrofit
SOHN - Bloodflows
Troy Gunner - Masks/the Valley
Christine and the Queens - Nuit 17 A 52
Fauve - Blizzard
Mary Velo - Repressed
Kirk Degiorgio & Spatial - Kirk Degiorgio Presents Sambatak
HISS 1292 - Aetherius Society
Machinedrum - Gunshotta Ave
Tessela - Nancy's Pantry
Ascion - The Cybernetic Drama
Haraket - Taint Attgo
Visionist - Crying Angels
Bas Mooy - Dolls and Decadence
Wen - Commotion
Love Songs For Our Husbands is really great, Human Death has 2 brilliant songs and the rest is just 'good' by their standards.
The new Fall EP is quite good too, The Remainderer. I think it's out on Monday.
although I like both. Bi-Sexuality of Distance is great. Just wondering which 2 songs on HD you consider the brilliant ones? I personally think Prescriptions and New Commuters are the best. I would have actually had those 3 songs on the album in place of Christmas, Something Happened and Friendly Policemen. Not that those songs are bad I just think the other ones are better. Great year for the band.
Not sure if they would have fit on the album though, I think I'd just leave things how they are.
Title track is incredible; but they all are really. Different from Ideas, but I think it sounds better - more scuzzy and vicious in places.
1. Marika Hackman - That Iron Taste
2. Rosie Lowe - Right Thing
3. BANKS - London
4. FKA Twigs - EP2
5. Marika Hackman - Sugar Blind
Crows an Wra- s/t
Famine- A Fist Full of Sore Thumbs
Wade- Full Fuck
Loma Prieta/Raein split 7"
is my favourite. It's really lush sounding and forward thinking.
'The shape of apes to come'
It's really bloody good
Shit and Shine - DIAG04 (Diagonal)
Raw messy sounding house from noiserock act. I like it precisely because it's scruffy.
Antony Naples - El Portal (The Trilogy Tapes)
Not Naples' most raw and jacking stuff, and all the better for it. Really lush sounding, especially on the bside
Moin - Moin EP (Blackest Ever Black)
Grim, grinding sledgehammer noiserock from Raime. The first track has the most incredible intense drop you'll hear all year.
DJ Rashad - Rollin' (Hyperdub)
Rashad reminds me that juke has so much soul. The title track is genuinely moving.
Ex-Easter Island Head - Mallet Guitars Three (Low Point)
Blissful Glassian Reich-isms tapped out on guitars. Third one is the best yet, it goes beyond the concept considerably.
Terekke - YYYYYYYYYY (L.I.E.S.)
Best house thing that LIES have put out. Really woozy, cosmic sounding synth washes. I could have put a lot of their stuff from this year in the list... Beau Wanzer, Delroy Edwards, Vereker...
El Mahdy Jr - The Spirit Of Fucked Up Places (Boomarm Nation)
Arabic plunderphonics in the key of Madlib.
Helena Hauff - Actio Reacto (Werk Discs)
Pummeling machine kraut. So intense, it feels continuously like it's on the edge of falling apart entirely but just continues to drive and drive.
Antony Parasole - Quickstrike 01 (The Corner)
I really need to find a copy of this. Maybe the best techno track of the year. Function played it at Berghain and it completely ruined the dancefloor
440ppm - Avian EP (Avian)
Muscly, mechanical techno from Shaun O'Sullivan. His EP on The Corner was really good too.
Terekke it was easily the best thing on L.I.E.S. this year alongside Florian Kupfer. They went way OTT on the quality control this year for me, released like 30 12"s, most of them really half arsed from the ones I heard.
Thats got to be the best Anthony Naples 12" by quite a way too, love it. TTT had a really good year in general, loved the DJ Spider & Marshallito, Rezzett and Tuff Sherm 12"s a lot too. The Hinge Finger release by Mix Mup is quality n'all.
I gave up on trying to remember all the techno/dance 12"s there are just to many and I have no idea if they're EPs of just singles so didn't bother with a lot of those but yeah Quickstrike is a beast, really bangin' party time summery techno.
I just really wanted something from The Corner on the list as I loved everything they put out this year. And Quickstrike was so far and above the best thing even for that label that I just had to put it on. Shawn O'Sullivan & Civil Security was great too, as was Fred P...
Agree on L.I.E.S. a bit. Rule of thumb seems to be most of the stuff they put out between January and August/Septemberish was awesome and then it all went a bit inconsistent. I respect Ron Morelli for just putting out what he rates rather than enforcing a quota though, that's what a good label should do really.
Have you heard Eomac on TTT? This is mad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqBnkGzKKeQ
I've not got around to exploring the Eomac and _moonraker 12"s on TTT yet really. There is so much noisy techno about that I kind of burnt out on it way before that one came out so haven't given it much time. Plus I think the Rezzett release did the noisy techno thing a bit better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTFQXa8Lj44
Prob another reason why LIES are either brilliant or insane for doing so many 12"s, cos the noisy techno thing is gonna burn out really quick pretty soon so get it all out while its hot or its gonna kill off the noisy techno thing by over saturation. No idea how he gets the cash to release 30 12"s in one year its insane.
might re-investigate though...
Turtle - Who Knows
The Wytches - Thunder Lizard Revisited
Wolf Alice - Blush
Theo Verney - T.V E.P
Marika Hackman - That Iron Taste
FKA Twigs - EP02
Jaws - Milkshake
MØ - Bikini Daze
So many great EPs this year. You can stream a track from each on that^ link too <3
Fog Lake | Holy Cross
Boy Friend | Secret City
Princess Reason | Always Pretty
Hibou | Dunes
Theo Verney | TV
R.L Kelly | Life’s A Bummer
Trust Fund | Don’t Let Them Begin
/ please / | ep
Elvis Depressedly | Holo Pleasures
Salt Cathedral | Salt Cathedral
As good as her debut record, as good as that first Pipettes record.
Love, love, love her. Looking forward to a new album next year.
I think I'd quite like it if all music sounded like this.
I've got a soft spot for Micachu, she's ace, fun and really inventive. Plus it sounds like a grime beat getting chucked down some stairs.
and your description of it is almost as good
"a grime beat getting chucked down some stairs"
Well grime getting chucked down some stairs is one of my favourite genres but rarely is it done with such a killer pop edge like that. Those two should do an album of it.
?? It may have been released in November, but the title track and the Modselektor cover are awesome, let alone the other tracks
Definitely in hock to Actress but they were superb.
Recent Joe ep on Hessle was amazing. Stuff on Diagonal (Shit & Shine and Prostitues.) Fis on Tri-angle. Loads and loads of stuff I haven't heard let along bought.
is great. I'd not heard of them before checking them out as they're supporting Frankie Rose tomorrow. An excellent EP. Should be a great double headliner for me tomorrow.
From the Fact list. Incredible.
(As usual I discover this way too late to buy it on vinyl at a reasonable price.)
That said, these were great:
Princess Reason - Always Pretty
Wild Nothing - Empty Estate (though more of a mini album)
Their/They're/There - selftitled
Fridge Poetry - Soweto Slo Mo (Junior from Johnny Foreigner's project)
Bear Cavalry - Puryss
Abdulla Rashim - Semien Terara
Trancey, psychedelic, mind bending stuff from the Dozzy school of techno. Number 2 is my favorite techno song released this year,
Alan Johnson - Goron Sound
Twisty, dub infused bass music. Sounds a bit like classic Untold drenched in rosemary.
Aquarian Foundation - Silent Teaching
From the same grouping as L.I.E.S et al but has an emotional resonance that much of that kind of music lacks.
Circuit, Burns & Hawk - From the Legal Pad Of...
If Natural Snow Buildings ever made a house record
D'Marc Cantu - Alternate Frequency
Size & Shape is a big tune
dBridge - Move Way
Heavy post-autonomic dnb
V/A - Geophone 19
Voices From the Lake, Mike Parker and Stanislav Tolkechev on one ep. Reptilicus is the one
Voices from the Lake - 531hz
This one kind of went under the radar a bit. A side is classic twisty stuff from VFTL and there's a great extended remix of it on the flip.
Elgato - Dunkel Jam
We Dream Electric always seemed perfect to put on when the sun came out
Emptyset - Material
Empteyset recorded in a nuclear bunker amongst other places. Don't need to say more really
Enrico Mantini - Private Collection
As a big fan of old cheesy italian house music this is kind of essential. Kind of sad how modern it sounds when you look at Bicep et all
Hauntologists - Haunts
Dusseldorf Haunts is the one. Berghain with a cheeky grin
Kamikaze Space Programme - Kamikaze Space Programme EP
This is most favorite release of the year. I didn't really see this get much press anywhere but what you have here is 4 thats that would kill any dancefloor. Sounds a bit Hessle, a bit electroy. Amazing stuff. Hard to choose a favorite cut but Pyongyang probably gets it.
Kobosil - - -----
Stripped back, psychedelic techno
Morphosis - Dismantle
Morphosis as his most raw and noisey.
Move D - KM20 Tapes
Ridiculous how contemporary this sounds
This never really hit me the same way that his other releases did until hearing him mix it with some really heavy electro in room 2 at the Hessle fabric takeover. Which was one of my sets of the year
Pearson Sound - Starburst
All 3 tracks are just killer on this. The kick on the title track!
Peverelist - Aztec Chant / Livity
Rodhad - Spomeniks
Rodhad seems to of had a breakout year. Great techno
Ruffhouse & Clarity - Persecute / Aphasia
Striped back, minimal dnb. Ruffhouse has had a great year.
Sabre - WT 19
Summery house music released on Willie Burn's label.
Son.sine - upekah
This is a re-issue but any chance to mention this gem is worth it. One of the best eps ever as far as I'm concerned.
Tagwell Woods - Tagwell Woods
Another release on WT. Strange, electro-y, ephemeral stuff made by a Hackney primary school teacher.. One of the labels of the year as well.
Theo Parrish - Long Walk In Your Sun / Strawberry Dragon
This one was sneaked in at the end of the year wasn't it.
Vakula - Bandura 002
Another few cuts of Vakula's wonderfully strange house music.
lots of listening there to catch up on.
I'll have to check out soem others, nice one.
Love the Aquarian Foundation 12" I've got, haven't grabbed the one you list yet they're so good. Proper warm inventive analogue house jams. Pev, Alan Johnson, Elgato, Pearson Sound, Objekt all gems.
