I just can't process this at all.
but I feel really bad for the remaining Prophets because he's basically killed their career.
But maybe not as sorry as I do for the baby he tried to rape.
the band had split up, there was pretty daming evidence. He was known to be a bit of a sick fuck, but not an actual sick fuck. If that makes sense.
http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/live-lostprophets-ian-watkins-trial-6341204'The jury were spared viewing some "extremely graphic and distressing" video of Ian Watkins committing horrific offences. 'And 'Watkins, with his hands clasped in front of him, rocked back and forth as he also admitted sexually assaulting a child aged under 13.He also admitted aiding and abetting a female co-defendant to sexually assault a child under 13.The singer, who has sold 3.5m records, looked at his feet as he admitted conspiracy to rape a child aged under 13, while his voice faltered as he quietly replied "guilty" to a charge of conspiring to sexually assault a child under 13.He also pleaded guilty to possessing an indecent photograph of a child between August and December last year, a further charge of possessing four indecent photographs of children between August and December last year, and another charge of possessing five indecent images of children between last August and last September. He also pleaded guilty to two counts of taking indecent photographs of children dating back to 2007 and 2008.Watkins also admitted possession of indecent photographs of a child and possessing extreme pornography depicting a person engaged in a sex act with an animal.'Bloody hell
Would have mitigated things that much in the circumstances
Some people on this planet definitely don't deserve to live.
And he is one of them.
particularly on twitter and facebook, with "rot in hell u nonce kunt" being a particular highlight
classy as ever, internet
who cares about what he did, right??? :)
Someone was holding up a sign saying "IAN WATKINS IS A SEX GOD" and they got a shout out from Ian. If only we knew...
Now that I think about it, might have been "SEX GOD IAN WATKINS" or something like that instead, can't remember.
I'd google it but... yeah...
is just the less horrific details.
From a press reporter who's included some simply unpalatable evidence:
"Believe it or not i have heavily edited the details of the case."
If you liked their music before, what you still be able to listen to it ?
I'm personally not familiar with lost prophets and don't particularly feel compelled to go digging into their back catalogue right now but it reminds me of the Bertrand Cantat story. I loved Noir Desir (french rock band), then the lead singer killed his girlfriend in a domestic dispute (both of them were high, things got out of hand). I still listen to their stuff regularly nowadays but it's always bittersweet.
They haven't really been something I would listen to for a long time, but I still had a few songs in my playlist.
Maybe if he was something like the bassist I could manage, but as the singer he's too prominent to listen to it and feel comfortable.
were produced by Phil Spector who was convicted for murder, so it shows how unnoticable it is for many people when that person is in the background of things.
while knowing this. I
Interesting how I can find it OK to listen to music from someone charged with murder but would have a tough time listening to someone with paedo charges.
I think you're right on the forefront/background thing though. Would I stop listening to Phil Spector produced tracks if he had paedo charges pressed against him ? probably not. The fact that it's the singer makes it a lot more uncomfortable.
Spector is a crazy person. This is the guy who pulled a gun on Johnny Ramone and John Lennon. For him to kill someone? It's shitty, but when I found out it had happened, I thought, "Man, that's crazy," and realized that it was almost par for the course.
This isn't like that. Ian Watkins, up until all of this came out, was just a guy. It's the difference between finding out the dude who lives behind the 7-11 down the street killed a guy, and finding out that your girlfriend killed a guy. They both suck, but the latter is a hell of a lot more shocking.
I'll continue to listen to Phil Spector's stuff because, aside from the fact that he's an insane genius, his crimes weren't altogether shocking. Watkins' crimes are so horrible that I would think of less horrible shit if I were told to come up with horrible shit. His crimes are bad enough that they sound like the result of someone at The Onion having a really dark week and writing an article to parody the "rock n roll lifestyle." So, I'm not gonna listen to Lostprophets - which is fine, because I never actually did in the first place. But I have no plan to now.
I've been studying it at uni recently, such as looking at the way that music critics apply elements of an artist's biography when there isn't any actual evidence of the music being autobiographical, as we just expect it of pop music. And it's difficult not to re-read music when we discover something substantial about an artist's life.
you sir have another thing coming
also now it makes sense as to why the women haven't been named, as it would give away their children's identities. Guess I should've figured that out beforehand.
But all the "IAN WATKINS DESERVES TO DIE" stuff is pointless. He committed serious crimes, he's pleaded guilty, he'll never be able to commit those crimes again, end of. It's more important to have an open dialogue on 'paedophillia' in order to prevent things like this happening again.
it's not 'end of' for all those he abused is it? Or the families of the victims. If he and his cohorts had done that to my children I'd want him dead, preferably at my own hand.
but that doesn't mean I agree with it or think we should give in to lynch mob mentality. And being Charles Bronson isn't going to change what he did either.
"In Oct 2008 he filmed himself having sex with another 16-year-old girl, who was also a Lostprophets fan."
So now the attempted baby rape makes sense - it was the natural progression of his deparavity. Well done BBC.
is that the report is implying a link between a man having sex with a sixteen year old and a man trying to rape a baby.
What was the purpose of reporting this entirely legal and unconnected fact if not to suggest that both having sex with 16 year old fans and trying to rape a baby are in some way connected and indicative of his sick mind.
It's producing child pornography.
Assuming he had her permission he did nothing wrong.
It's quite legal to have sex with 16-year-olds, but if you film sex with anyone under 18, it's classed as child pornography. It's a weird legal quirk, but it's probably for the best, given the doors it would open for pornographers if it wasn't there.
-I hadn't realised that. I suppose that makes sense in terms of the law and as another sex 'crime' fits with the story.
In reaction to some of the slightly hysterical demands for castration/death penalty/quadraspazzing by stairwell nonce-bashing - Is there any way his assets could be seized and the money given to suitable charities who tackle child abuse? I imagine he'll still have a fair wedge sat in his bank account when he leaves prison
I believe that the proceeds of crime laws only apply if you can prove that the money was gained as a direct result of the crime in question. Which in this case, it clearly wasn't. I could be wrong but that's how I've always understood it.
seriously calling for castration? or might they just be expressing their understandable anger and disgust?
I imagine some of the tabloid comments sections are a hoot too
MARLON: So Roscoe old buddy old pal, I was reading in the news today...
ROSCOE: Probably best stop you there, mate.
Multiple world tours over the course of twelve years or so, living in each others pockets. How did nobody notice anything?
use your brain
and wandering on...
that he really got started when he got into drugs (in the last few years) having been straight-edge his whole life before that...
Rest of band all started families and moved to LA. He got into crystal meth and stayed in Wales - I can well believe they didn't know anything. What a sad, shit story for everyone involved.
I'm 40. I have two girls. My first gig at 17 was Faith No More. When I was about 27 and fakesound came out I bought it and loved it (as did a mate of similar vintage) on account of its brilliant reimagining (copying) of FNM's finest moments. I gave up at the boyband shouting from the roof tops stuff but I still liked a bit of Shinobi.. etc.
Obv on account of my age I remember Jimmy Saville et al back in the day, on TOTP etc., but I never invested time and energy in support in them (beyond watching them and listening to them) so when the revelations came out I didn't really feel any really strong emotional response to it.
But this LostProphets thing I do have a MASSIVE emotional response to it, because I invested in them at the time (however short a time it was). It's awful, terrible. But it's not til it really hits home that it hits home. Like I say, this is no doubt a combination of having my own kids, loving the band at a time, and kinda always hoping your heroes (or those you sort of look up to) won't let you down.
God knows every temptation is available to people like him and god knows I'm no angel BUT lord alive this is massively hard work. I've always tried to give the benefit of the doubt, everyone is fallible, but... but... the control and manipulation is terrifying...
Anyway, so I don't want to burn him to death and I understand the "who cares" glib comments above because - once upon a forever ago - I didn't have kids either and then you can afford to respond in that way. But just you wait...
Hearts out to everyone damaged by this sorry tale
(PS I can hardly believe I'm writing anything so (at all) sincere on a message board. Sorry. I will revert to sardonic sarcastic sniping after a good lie down)
PS will not be listening again.
I have three-year-old daughter myself, and while I enjoyed TFSOP when it came out, I can't imagine listening to it again any time soon. Lostprophets weren't my favourite band, but I liked them well enough.
Sometimes when you like a band, it means you put a certain trust in them. That's why we feel personally put out when they make a bad record/say silly things in the NME/license their songs for ads, even though we don't know them and have no right to expect them to do anything. But you can't always separate your feelings for art from feeling for its creators.
This seems to be hitting much closer to home than the Yewtree/Saville stuff, because Watkins is a contemporary of many people on here. Saville et al was of a different generation (two generations before me), so we can at least think that his lot are dying off and things are better. But then some prick like Watkins comes along and gets into the same shit, if not worse, and it's like he makes us all look bad. And what's worse, he seemed to get into it 'voluntarily': he wasn't abused himself at a young age (afaik), not that that excuses it - he got into it at the same time he got into meth. It's like he was just trying to be as 'extreme' as possible. Christ, what a prick.
Totally agree with how your perspective changes when you have kids yourself.
Like, just 'fuck him' and forget about it. Whereas now, it's more like 'fuck him for the following reasons'.
at the amount of people I know coming out of the woodwork who seem to have some kind of emotional investment in the band and are floored by the news. I flailed around in sticky-floored clubs to Shinobi vs Dragon Ninja in my teens like anyone else, but let's face it, as a band they were pretty gash.
But as any of us are posting on this board were bound to have some emotional whatever response aren't we. And you can't answer emotion with logic. If your post was any way a response to mine (I would not presuppose such an arrogant thing) what I was saying at a base, human, emotional level is that politicians actors ageing DJs and game show hosts being outed for this kind is terrible terrible thing don't upset me as much as this chap has. Which again is purely an emotional thing, they're all as bad (or pitiful or ill or in need of help) as each other. and I haven't listened to them for yonks but I remember a time I did. Christ knows that I have emotionally invested in enough bad bands in my time...
that since I've been into music , Lostprophets always seem to have been around and in the public eye. Was never a fan but I think I was 11 when Shinobi vs Dragon Ninja first came out so since I've started really getting into bands and stuff, they've always been about.
Always shit mind you
...but it just seems with touring bands, you're living on top of one another in a much more intimate fashion than you would with friends and family. Hence why bandmates tend to be the first to know if one of their number has a monstrous drug habit.
Anyway. Enough with that. I've been fucking haunted by this sorry tale and I've never been a fan of the band. Its just so unbearable to comprehend. Wasnt there a relatively well articulated blog post about a year before the story broke about some rumblings this might be happening?
and theres been murmurings of murky stuff for a while, but they only seem to have come into the public eye when it all broke
