Tell us some of your favourite extras/artwork that have come with a CD

I really like the Golden Dossier that came with The Golden Archipelago with Shearwater. A lot of effort went into it, but it wasn't as part of any deluxe reissue or anything. Worth reading whilst listening.

  • I love it when you get extra stuff in with a record

although I find it happens more commonly with vinyl than cd releases.

The huge horse poster artwork thing that came with the Skeletal Lamping 2LP was pretty special.

My favourite label for this has been MIE, I remember getting early Trouble Books Lps with little booklets, notes and CDRs with other stuff on. Really nice to get the personal stuff and get a surprise with a record.

I think as the whole physical-media-thing tries to keep afloat we should be seeing more of this kind of thing. I don't mind spending extra money on the physical release if it's done with care and includes some cool stuff but a tenner plus for a CD with no lyric booklet or artwork or anything at all does make me wonder why I bother.

  • I was sincerely very tempted by this...

who doesn't want a free wooden bird made from piano parts, I know I do.

I stopped buying CDs a few years ago but there are a few labels, like the one above, that package their music in exceedingly beautiful accompanying art that make it hard for me to not cling to my CD loving past.

  • I used to love

the book that came with FSOL's Dead Cities. looking back, the images in it haven't aged too well (loads of tacky early Photoshop tricks like lens flare) but I still like the idea of doing an imaginary soundtrack to some kind of Ballardian futuristic noir thing.

  • I have that LP version of F#A#? with the penny crushed by the train and a load of diagrams and postcards and stuff

Also got a version of Ritual de lo Habitual that came with the programme to someone's funeral, and Mabuta No Ura by Boris which comes from a load of pictures from a film that never got made.

  • come to think of the best stuff I do still have is the constellation records...

Cds from the turn of the century - the whole quality card no jewel case to break thing was pretty appealing - So yeah early gybe, silver mnt zion, do make say think, 1 speed bike, exhaust sackville, etc.

I was always found o M83 - Dead Cities... as well, just because it was in a bigger box.

  • Ladies and Gentleman probably had the best packaging I recall seeing for a CD.

Shame I found the album really boring.

  • Cut out and keep children's mobile (the hanging variety)

that came with Laura Veirs' Tumblebee was rather sweet.

Also liked the postcards with Gas's four CD compendium of Nah und Fern (just cos I like that sort of organic look - bit like the Flat Earth artwork for early Curve records).

  • From one extreme to the next

    - The hidden booklet in Kid A with Tony Blair's evil face
    - The 'become a Japanese girl popstar' boardgame that came with this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Best!_Morning_Musume_1 (Worst front cover ever)
