Another great album by Son Lux imho – His first album - at war with walls and mazes - may well be my favourite album of the last five years, His second album - We are Rising - expanded on the orchestral elements, moving away from what seemed a much more 1 man introspective and darker album to a chorus of voices in staggered resolve and with – lanterns - the voices/songs that were rising in the second album have now stood tall. The sound is even bigger and more collaborative particularly in tracks like no crimes and lost it to trying. Fortunately its not all happy, happy joy, joy though there’s demons round the corners and in the lyrics and some lovely little hauntingly small beat vocals tracks remain.
His music seems to fall between the genres - too upbeat to be considered neo-classical, too orchestral to be considered electronica- I don't think there's much out there quite it - feel free to suggest some artists if you disagree.
Overall it’s a fine blend of electronica, orchestral instrumentation and great composition and this album has a few more Anais Mitchell style theatrical touches thrown in too. I’ve always liked his slightly haunted vocal, but guess it could put some people off. He does well with the guests spots as well, with people like DM stith, antlers frontman Peter Siberman, up and comers lilly and madeleine, and members of bands like gem club, dirty projectors and mutemath and various orchestral players all contributing.
Anyway tldr, 0 replies and all that, favoured tracks – lost it to trying, easy, no crimes, lanterns lit - but they’re all good - worth some of you giving it a listen I reckon – I can’t imagine it escaping my top 10. It crosses between upbeat gems of the year, like moderat and young fathers, and more introspective moments akin to the likes of frahm and arnalds.
