Not sure they'll ever top In Ghost Colours, but I'm looking forward to this.
*silence*
Anyway, the whole album is streaming now:
http://pitchfork.com/news/52775-stream-cut-copys-album-free-your-mind/
Glad to see they have gone full Urban Cookie Collective on us.
I was a bit worried it might sound too much Screamadelica. Fortunately, it sounds like one of those 'Dance Hits 94' cassettes I grew up with.
I'm looking forward to this
I like them so much I'm going to Paris for a weekend at the end of November to see them. The London date is on a weekday (and I'm out of leave), the Paris date is on a Saturday.
(Booked a whole weekend because gig cancellations happen, so if it did I've still got a whole weekend in Paris, which is my idea of fun anyway...)
I think this is brilliant
really seriously great. perhaps the pop album of the year (!!!) - maybe it's just up my street but goddamn this is hitting the spot
Can't wait to listen to this
Zonoscope was excellent and Sun God is one of those tracks that takes me straight back to that summer
Oh man. Those synths. Loving this,
I'm enjoying this more than the new Arcade Fire
I just stubbed my toe on the coffee table
Even that was more enjoyable than the new Arcade Fire.
Reflektor taking over from Random Access Memories
as this year's album that people find any excuse to slate when talking about any other albums, no matter how unrelated.
Give it a rest mate
You work for their PR or something?
http://i.imgur.com/i8t438S.gif
In Ghost Colours is a great record.
Still listen to that a lot now, especially during the summer. Not normally into that kind of thing, but it's near flawless.
Have found all their other records extremely boring.
including this or no?
I couldn't connect with Zonoscope.
But I'm back onboard now.
gets better with every listen
love it
they already did top In Ghost Colours
before they even released it.
Fuck me ragged
this is a seriously wonderful album. Sitting here with a big dumb grin on my face listening to it. Right up there with In Ghost Colours, and I never thought I'd say that.
What I like about it
is they've stopped trying to impress Pitchfork (which they were obviously doing on Zonoscope) & turned the cheeseometer back up to 11. "Shine on brother", Balearic basslines, Italian house piano...fucking lovin' it. If this had come out in 1990 it would've been massive.
can't get over how good this is. gonna make a late run for AOTY
it's like if Yeasayer had kept the genius of 'O.N.E.' going across a whole album
Looking forward to finally givingthe stream a go
There's something still exciting about waiting to hear an album that you're 99% sure will put a big dumb grin on your face.
YAAYYYYYYYYY
I feared terrible piano house pastiche, I got Dance Hits 94*. I've gone full circle and I like it
*I know this kinda reference already got made but it was EXACTLY what I was feeling about it too
I also like the fact
that there's a totally random ELO pastiche in there too. Fucking love it, played it to death this week.
it's interesting how everyone's saying it put a smile on their face
because i caught myself grinning too, and this has got to be the first album in a very long time that has done that. found myself bopping my head to it too. and i never bop.
I've caught myself shaking imaginary maracas
I like 'Reflektor' but I'm listening to 'Free Your Mind', a lot more. Superb fun!
It's better than 'Zonoscope' (though that is a very good album), and might even be just as good as 'In Ghost Colours'.
It's a really clever salute to the acid house music of the later 80s and 90s, and I concur with others, who've said that that this album would have been huge, had it been released back then. Might even have been a classic now.
I'd even go so far as to court ridicule by suggesting that Cut// Copy are savyer musicians than the artists they're influenced by here.
Certainly one of the AOTY year for me. They've only gone and done it, again!
This makes me excited to hear it
Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
Must... wait... for... CD. Must... not... stream.
This will be even more fantastic in their live show.
Two stars in the Guardian
Boo, hiss etc
Can't think of any publication I trust less with music reviews
Than the guardian, though Petridis is usually okay. Always seem to judge albums on overall sound...and never the strength of songwriting.
how
not just me that's disappointed by it then
surprised to see such positivity on here (and you lot know how much I love them)
Come on sean
It's just uncomplicated fun. Every track has a great hook. You don't want to be lumped in with these hacks.
but we have 8/10 in 405
http://thefourohfive.com/review/article/cut-copy-free-your-mind
can't wait to hear this
have been listening to zonoscope loads lately.
Those tracks sound very very promising
If the album is at least as good as Zonoscope, I might start thinking about Cut Copy as the best band of the last 10 years.
the Spiritualized remix of free yr mind is aces..
the fort romeau one is amazing too, i like it more than the original
Yeah this remix is brilliant
Made me check out Fort Romeau's other stuff too, which is very good
www.pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/18689-cut-copy-free-your-mind/
Eesh. Reads like a 5.something.
I like it. Not blown away, but the last three took a while to sink in.
I was going to make a joke
about how Pitchfork was probably going to give this 6.0 or something, and lo and behold:
http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/18689-cut-copy-free-your-mind/
We must all be wrong eh?
Thankfully there's been some good reviews so far
http://anydecentmusic.com/review/5983/Cut-Copy-Free-Your-Mind.aspx
urgh and no doubt the dis review's gonna be bad too because sean was disappointed
smdh
4/10 from Spin now too
The tepid reviews for this and the Sleigh Bells album of late are leaving me somewhat baffled
I think my favourite songs off of this are
Free Your Mind, Footsteps, Take Me Higher, and Walking in the Sky. This album is probably going to end up soundtracking my summer. It's a shame you guys got this at the time of year you did, because you can tell with the timing of it's release it's supposed to be a summer album.
Well
I love Cut Copy but I'm finding the vapidity of the lyrics a bit of a struggle on this one, even though that was never really a) their strong suit or b) the point of the exercise, I suspect. I know it's meant to be a homage to all the "summer of love" stuff but some of the rhyming couplets make me think of Noel Gallagher way too much for my liking.
Musically it's great though and I imagine it'll be ace live...
I hear ya
But I think complaining about the lyrics on a Cut Copy album is like buying a sausage roll & then complaining that it's got a sausage in it. One of the best tracks off In Ghost Colours had a chorus that went "Lights & music are on my mind/Be my baby one more time", so you can't say you weren't warned :)
I know
You're right. Like I said, lyrics were never their strongest suit but stuff like "You've got to reach the sky if you want your love to shine" (at least I think that's what it was) is maybe a touch too far on the cringe-o-meter for me!
Still, as I mentioned above I'm having a weekend in Paris at the end of the month just to see them so I think it's fair to say they haven't managed to put me off that much...
Footsteps in the night, footsteps in the night yee-eeah
Echo through my life, echo through my life yee-eeah
Third listen in
Yeah it's ok. Quite like the tunes, vocals leaving me a bit cold but sure it'll grow on me. Liked Zonoscope but found it to personally just be In ghost colours MK II, so am at least glad this is a bit of a departure from that sound.
I'm still mega disappointed by it
but Rob Leedham warmed to it a little http://drownedinsound.com/releases/17982/reviews/4147120
Doesn't sound like he warmed to it very much...
Gutted that this isn't getting the attention it deserves. Far from a perfect album, and could definitely lose some fat, but most of this is absolute gold.
It's at least an 8
couldn't disagree more with the review.
I do not understand some of the reviews
especially when it mention the lack of highlights such "Need You Now" or "Hearts on Fire"... FFS:
Meet Me in a House of Love?
In Memory Capsule?
We Are Explorers?
three bona fide song of the year contenders
strong bafflement at the critical indifference / occasional cases of mauling
not to mention Walking in the Sky!
its a 6 for me
I can't understand it either.
Certainly one of the best releases to come out right at the end of the year.
Very good fun all the way through.
I could be wrong
But maybe people's reactions to this album depend on how old they are, & whether they experienced this kind of stuff first time round in 1989-91? It pushes all my buttons & makes me really nostalgic, but I guess if you don't have that reaction to it, it probably sounds like a load of dated hippy shite.
I didn't even exist during those years, but yeah I see where you're coming from
basically if you don't have an appreciation for dance music during those years then it's unlikely this kinda thing's gonna appeal.
my favourite song of all time is Livin Joy's Dreamer
go figure
Love a bit of Bizarre Inc meself
this is good
