apparently bellended up the elliott smith tribute night in brixton last night? or so i'm told.
notorious for being a shambles live? Remember when he was really popular around 2000-ish? Seems like a lifetime ago now.
Just never recaptured that really.
that he for some reason couldnt actually play any smith songs, started his set with a weird extended speech about being friends with him and beck and winning a mercury prize, an audience member told him to get on with it and then he played a song, calling the audience member a "cunt" in between every line
which isn't very becoming
The story above is only half true.
the speech wasn't weird, it was actually engaging and pertinent but at around 15 mins it did alienate *some* of the crowd. Also, he stated up front that, having known Elliot, he wouldn't be playing covers of his songs because it's not what he would have wanted. That seemed fair enough to me but again agitated some of the crowd.
It was at this point that someone shouted 'Elliot would be ashamed of you'. Then the night kind of went off the rails. Damon was viably upset/angry but IMO went way too far in his retribution.
it may be only half of the truth, but it's all true
Was just trying to explain more the reason for the litany of C bombs and on stage melt down. Wasn't a normal run of mill heckle and certainly not just someone telling him to get on with it.
Although, many people did tell him to get on with playing some songs throughout his set.
makes sense that he'd want to make the person feel like shit for saying that, but he kinda ignored that it'd be a pretty shit addition to the night for almost everyone else
loads of people left because it was really uncomfortable to watch. The heckler left around 10 mins after the heckle but the ranting continued throughout the night. I'm not going to go into specifics of what was said but some of the things were deeply horrible and unnecessary.
some Elliott stuff though - not a full set, but a couple of covers. On the night he chose not to, and given that a lot of the crowd were BDB fans who'd come to see him, that in itself wouldn't be a massive issue.
The speech was funny when it started, then it meandered and got very muddled. Parts of it were poignant, other parts just made various people wonder what he was on (actually he described on stage what he'd been on the night before - jokingly or otherwise, not a brilliant move). Some of the BDB fans lapped it up, but folks who'd come to see Elliott Smith's life celebrated lost patience. The heckling was ill-advised, but given that 10 minutes in (after going onstage late) he still hadn't actually played a song, it was understandable.
He got lost in his own ego. For all that he verbally paid tribute to Elliott, his behaviour contradicted it completely. It was such a shame to see people at a sold out show leaving before his set was even half-done, because they were so unimpressed with what had happened.
at the Frank Sidebottom thing.
and acid and getting people to buy him drinks, and referring to it as "just another gig" doesn't sound like a particularly winning set of moves either. again, this is all second hand info but i dont see why the people saying it to me would bother to make it up.
Anyway, this sounds to me to be a perfect storm of horrid circumstance. Badly Drawn Boy bleating on in arrogant fashion in front of a load of overtly-reverential Elliott Smith fans at a tribute gig? That's an ill-advised combo if ever there was.
Firstly, the abuse of the heckler went well beyond calling him a cunt. Damon repeatedly said that he hoped he died and soon. Not very cool and at a tribute show not very dignified either.
Secondly, Damon kept waffling on about his drug abuse. No bother to me but given the circumstances around Elliott's death maybe not the time to brag about the various shit that you've done.
Thirdly there was a right kiss ass in the crowd trying to stir things up. Maybe Damon would have left it alone but this guy kept trying to out the heckler and should certainly take sme responsibility for being a pratt.
Couldn't enjoy the atmosphere after all that so walked out with a couple of friends. Shame because the bands before were great.
...but Sweetheart Contract, AAG (All American Girl) and Jaq Gallier. By all accounts put on good performances.
This sounds like a nightmare. Badly Drawn Boy has plenty of previous for this sort of thing doesn't he?
at Manchester airport in August this year I saw he had a bit of a to-do with the security as he refused to take it off on medical grounds when going through the scanners.
that yes, jordan, he was indeed wearing his little hat.
this sounds fucking shit. Shame really.
when did he start being a dick? He seemed like a jolly nice bloke a few years ago
I think his behaviour has always been somewhat erratic.
For the last 5 years or so.
Saw him at the jazz stage at a Glastoo some time ago, and he was consistently rude [bitter] to the audience all night.
Saw him at Applecart a couple of years sho and he almost got to the point where he was offering the crowd out.
Props to Traynor. Called him out for being a complete and utter cunt back in 08, I think. Fair fucks.
massive shame at a tribute gig - sounds like he really did treat it as just another gig...
Anyone that thinks the hour of bewilder beast is better than have you fed the fish, seriously needs to get ear transplants.
I was considering thising it but didn't want to rush into anything...
something to talk about
once around the block
the Have you Fed the fish tour whenever that was. Calling out his band for being rubbish and not playing his songs correctly. Seem to remember bloke from the Smiths was his bass player at the time.
I remember seeing around then playing with a backing track whilst he did the whole acoustic troubadour thing, which was a bit odd. It makes a bit of sense now if he sacked them.
Listened to Have You Fed the Fish the other day. It's still brilliant.
