It used to be used a lot in conjunction with Def Jux stuff.
Schäffer the Darklord
Proper incredible lyricist. Human The Death Dance is monumental. The last few 'Sick Of' mixtapes have had some of his best stuff. The last album was fucking horrible.
His other stuff - not so much.
...but Sage Francis picked some horrible beats for his last few albums.
But the 'live band' thing on Li(f)e just sounds stodgy and corny. His lyrics dropped off a bit for that one too. His first three albums and the Non-Prophets thing have some astonishing wordplay on them...
at the moment it would be Young Fathers
aesop rock / hail mary malon / weathermen
serengeti & polyphonic
clouddead (and it's spawns)
without the vocals -
it's a shame nothing further came of the project. the roster was incredible.
is this an actual thing or some kind of fan compilation or what?
never seen this before, just noticed it on their wikipedia page
(lol @ that cover)
milo - Things That Happen At Day/Things That Happen At Night
Love his stuff
and how he always raps about how totally independent he is :')
But since he's teamed up with Killer Mike does that mean he doesn't count?
More recently, I really liked Doppelgangaz last couple of albums.
Really liked Primitive Plus back in my backpacking days
It's a pretty stupid term, IMO. As far as I know, the term comes from early 90's groups like Black Moon who would wear backpacks, and the look was all about baggy jeans, hooded sweatshirts, graffiti etc. Check out the Who Got The Props video, or see EMPD and Serch wearing them on Yo! MTV Raps.
So the kind of acts you you used to get on Def Jux and Anticon, I don't think many would qualify, as I think backpack hip hop has more of a 'street' (cringe) sound and style.
So, Company Flow - yes
cLOUDDEAD - no
Just my thoughts, yo.
does MF DOOM count?
kids rapping about gap years & getting ripped off in Vietnam?
