Brought on by listening to Seek Magic by Memory Tapes, a great album, but helped by having heavily processed vocals deep in the mix. Not really a style you can keep forever, so Hawke reveals his untampered vocals for the next two vocals...and they're largely awful. Hope he switches to sampling/guest vocals in the future...otherwise I'll always have SM at least.
