Slumber-pop - music a bit like Broadcast, Stereolab, Au Revoir Simone

sean [Edit] [Delete] 28 replies 10:54, 26 September '13

You know, the stuff that isn't that 'chillwave' bollox. Things which sway and crackle and swoop. Music that drifts and spirals, and is a bit psychedelic but isn't really psychedelia. Music that feels like that moment before you know if you're awake or still asleep. Things that feel like that moment of transition from being away to falling asleep.

Things like Memoryhouse's 'lately' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_lcZn7SUTI

Was reviewing the new Au Revoir Simone album ( http://drownedinsound.com/releases/17888/reviews/4146919 ) and thinking, 'I want me some more of that'. So what else should I have caress my ears?

  • That Au Revoir Simone record is really nice

And you're right on the money with the Memoryhouse track...that first e.p (sub pop version) is great but that album was a letdown. Can't provide links atm but can give a few album tips:

    Orcas - Orcas
    Majical Cloudz - Impersenator
bvdub - The Art of Dying Alone

  • crepuscular

I wrote an album that tried to occupy that cleft between sleep and waking...lots of pops and cracks and seething unfurling synths.

  • stop inventing genres you simple fuck

'Yellow House' sounds good when you're drifting off.

pretty sure I made a less terrible version of this thread, though.

    • Stop getting annoyed when I invent genres

      and then I'll stop.

  • you're aware that "dream pop" is a welln established term, yes?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_pop

    alcxxk | 26 Sep '13, 17:46 | X
    • yeah

but you don't get slumber-party vibes from the loneliness of dreaming.

      • every band you've mentioned is on here

        • what a crock

Antlers and Arcade Fire aren't dream-pop. I'm not even gonna get as far as B.

          sean @alcxxk | 26 Sep '13, 21:58 | X
          • I would say that Antlers certainly are.

Arcade Fire maybe less so, but some of their songs would fall into that category.

            marckee @sean | 26 Sep '13, 22:05 | X
            • Arcade Fire just sound like a deflated U2. Even their best song is just a Mercury Rev rip-off

          • A Sunny Day in Glasgow are the first band listed, though

Totally under-appreciated band who'd probably kind of fit with what you're talking about. In fact, they almost definitely fit yr description in a lot of ways -- need to give Ashes Grammar a listen when winter gets drawing in, I think.

  • It's a different route

but if you just want to absolutely slow down and chill out to the nth degree, then Black Elk - Brambles is probably the most therapeutic music i have ever heard
