Not a big fan of the last two records, but I'm always going to give anything from Mark Kozelek a try.
or was he always boring and I just didn't notice?
as are Ghosts of the Great Highway and April by Sun Kil Moon, so it's definitely not the latter in my opinion.
do think he needs to reign it in a bit, like, but after being pretty dubious early doors pretty much everything he's released since April (his last album that i immediately liked), absolutely everything has grown on me greatly, including the last SKM album, which at first i thought was the weakest thing he's done, but now find absolutely charming.
what the issue is, for me, is that a constant stream of records takes away from the excitement of knowing new stuff's on its way. it's kinda nice to forget about artists you love now and again, then to hear news out of the blue about a new record, then to spend time reinvestigating. with Kozelek it's kinda felt like i've not stopped listening for years.
Three albums out this year already.
But I really like April and Admiral Fell Promises so looking forward to this.
Well I'm just going to forget about it until then in that case.
Try Ghosts of the Great Highway and pretty much anything by Red House Painters
Used it to get my daughter to sleep for 13 months. Every day at least once, sometimes twice. Still not bored of it.
i do like a Kozelek cover, im quite partial to his Follow you follow me by Genesis, new partner's decent too
i really like it, in my top 20 albums of thwe year certainly - i think the electronica backdrop sets of his story vocals really well. Guess I'm slightly more of a album leaf fan than a kozelek fan though, because as much as i enjoy his vocal never been overwhelmed by his musical backdrop.
the last couple of decades for me. though his style has changed and he's become more and more focused on mastering playing his nylon string guitar and writing sometimes in a more lighthearted, maybe even frivolous way, there's no-one whose voice connects with me on the same level as his.
So I'm going to put it out there that, as someone who lost a little patience with him recently with the large amount of releases, his album with Desertshore has really got me motivated again.
Several albums released this year has him at the top of his game. His work with Lavelle is easily in my top 5 of his albums and the one with Desertshore was as good as his best solo stuff. The recent sun kil moon was a grower as well. Excited to hear of more music coming while he's on a roll.
but I really dislike 'I Love You Dad' for some reason and it's affecting my enjoyment of the rest of it. Maybe it's because I never had a dad. It feels a bit trite and I can't really imagine anything he's singing about. 'Jim Wise' is a new favourite though.
It is better than the one about his mum, he is asking for some 'I can't live without your mothers love' heckles for that one
No-one seems to be able to get a straight answer on this
so isn't that pretty definitive?
