Portishead - Half Day Closing
Eno - In Dark Trees
Shostakovich - String Quartet No 8, in C Minor
have shat me up at one time or another.
if you havent heard it before switch the lights off and put your earphones in/headphones on
Burial - Loner
Lapalux - Without You
Obligatory mention of Climbing Up The Walls
The reversed credits add to the suspense..
A real listen once and never again there.
Saw them play this live to an audience mostly consisting of beery LADS shouting for them to do Australia. Didn't go down well.
Hope they play this when I see them next week!
They're pretty much the antithesis of lad culture.
off the back of EMG and supporting oasis around europe and such they picked up a load of ladrock/dadrock fans that they've struggled to shake i think.
EMG & This is my truth... were massive sellers with loads of radio & TV airplay, for a fair while their gigs were an awkward mix of the feather boa types and polo shirted tools who only knew "we just wanna get drunk" and "Australiaaaaa"
he normally makes a HILARIOUS remark about Throbbing Gristle in these sort of threads
Maybe just all Throbbing Gristle
Radiohead - Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors
Burial - Endorphin
Sounds as if it was pulled from the soundtrack of a particularly unsettling horror movie.
Especially when the weird donkey noises start.
Amon Tobin - Proper Hoodidge
The Lushlife Project - Wurlitzer
all of his work is creepy and unsettling. I have a 3xCD boxset of work under his Leyland Kerby name which I bought off a co-worker who sold it to me because he couldn't listen to it anymore as it made him too emotional and depressed.
It's this btw: http://boomkat.com/downloads/228872-leyland-kirby-sadly-the-future-is-no-longer-what-it-was
crack that out at a house party.
All that haunted ballroom stuff on his earlier releases is just brilliant (pretty sure he chose his name as a tribute to The Shining).
straight from the Shining.
I think he samples 78s.
some of the sounds reside in that unnerving, uncanny space where you can't be sure what's making the sound, but it has a weirdly vocal quality. listened to it alone in the dark, as is appropriate, and it freaked me out.
and this Kreng tune scared the shit out of me on first listen.
this is the kind of thing I feel that the Haxan Cloak dude was striving for. or at least the effect, despite his means differing.
and of course, this KTL track. most stuff thatr creeps me out is vocal.
Of of a few songs that got me muttering 'bloody hell' while listening to it first time
and it scared the shit out of me!
i love it, but i'm always reminded by the futility of existence. and then the sadness starts.
and it's still the scariest thing ever recorded. lights off, sound up. welcome to the cosmos.
murcof - oort
caused me to vomit once
and installed it for me, ready to go. I didn't realise it at the time but it had a custom soundtrack, instead of the default NIN one. SAW II, and to this day I feel extremely uncomfortable listening to it. Dark corridors and Lovecraftian beasts and all that.
it's somewhere in the middle:
AMF are basically performance artists, but don't be put off by that. In 2005 they gave some blank cassettes to a couple of mortuary assistants and asked them to record the procedure of a body being embalmed. This they did, and then AMF released the audio with a bit of processing.
The result is both surprisingly listenable and one of the creepiest things I've ever heard. Mostly very quiet, grey drones, and all very low fi, with the sounds of various machines & clatter & indistinct conversation. Even if you don't know anything about the sound source (and let's face it, the concept is ever so slightly wanky), this album is the sound of death warmed up. A bit reminiscent of early Nocturnal Emissions, but much more subtle and effective in instilling a sense of creeping dread & Something Going On.
I couldn't find any sound samples online, but take my word for it, this is a pants-shittingly scary listen and well worth buying if you can track it down.
This has got a haunting and hellish vibe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dp0AH8WRES8
Double Leopards as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8IQZ3BJhRs
Complete with vocals from Malefic whilst locked inside a coffin I believe. Nice.
But for those who don't like clowns...
