The statement reads:
Although Morrissey’s Autobiography was set to be available throughout the UK on September 16th, a last-minute content disagreement between Penguin Books and Morrissey has caused the venture to collapse. No review copies were printed, and Morrissey is now in search of a new publisher.
There will, no doubt, be publishers queeing up for the book but it makes you wonder what the disagreement was over!
This was never going to be just another rock memoir- no chummy reminisces of the old days, no backing of when stuff needed to be said- you can be assured that Morrissey was going to settle a few scores and be hilarious at the same time in a way that would be hot to handle when most rock books read like CVs
It seems amazing to us that is even got this far- considering the remarkable, controversial, no holds barred, opinionated, larger than life certainly not mundane life of Morrissey and his determination to have things his own way in a time of meek mice writing mediocre memoirs it seems somehat surprising to us that Penguin got even this close to releasing the Morrissey autobiography.
I can imagine now the cowering libel editors and the terrified establishment toadies as they read through every page of what was no doubt a brilliantly written and certainly not very kind to the establishment and some fellow music travellers tome- the kind of book that had to be written- saying that when I interviewed Morrissey for my book about manchester music (the only time he has ever done this) I found him very helpful and enthusiastic about the project to the point where he would even walk into bookshops and buy copies…Still, I hope his book comes out because it will be one of the great reads…’
