A bit more post-punk/new wave compared with their last couple of albums. Sounds pretty damn good.
I don't like how they've decided to become a rock band, I want them to go back to doing what was making them great and different, playing around with textures, harmonies and tones in their songwriting...
Not really a fan of this at all.
but stuff like "dancing choose" and "golden age" were nothing like that and more straight up attempts at prince than anything else
Yeah I didn't like that last album that much either.
i like the sound of this new song but dunno how i'd feel about a whole albums worth
and was completely mystified by a lot of the criticism when it came out. It was the sound of a great band continuing to write great songs and play around with their sound. Still a far sight more interesting than a lot of other NY/Brooklyn acts. No Future Shock is classic.
They've generally improved with every album so I'm pretty excited for a new album.
but I don't really get what you mean by them 'trying to be a rock band' seeing as they've always been a rock band, or at least a variation of one. If not what where they before? I'm a sucker for working out what the fuck people mean with genre's, don't take it personally.
last couple of records they've been going for a more classical guitars bass and drums sound, which is a lot cleaner and heavier sounding. And it doesn't really suit them. Everything was better when they were hazy, sparse and beautiful. I mean listen to this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GX8g_IR2OEA
and love them all for different reasons. Though Staring at the Sun, Wolf Like Me etc are all pretty similar to some of the stuff off those last two albums. It's all still funky rock music.
but the overlapping vocals near the end are good. It didn't bowl me over or anything but I hate to make snap judgements. Might grow on me with time.
Does feel like a bit of a step back ambition-wise but it's pretty catchy, and I'd rather they were doing this than trying to be Prince.
I wouldn't expect it to be representative of the record as a whole though.
from the sound of it they're just thinking of putting out a few singles before they get round to recording one.
but this I just find dull and uninspiring. I agree that it sounds a bit too "rock band", I mean, yes they have technically always been a rock band of sorts, but this just trims off all the interesting aspects of their sound.
