Mine could well be Swans' The Great Annihilator:
Alcohol The Seed
Killing For Company
Pretty much epitomises why I love the band.
Diamond Dogs may be Dave's best vocal performance. And his average guitar/everything except the drums works where it probably would crush albums like Lodger and Scary Monsters that depend on fancy fret work.
Weird that I think Rebel Rebel, one of his big hits, may be the worst track on this album...
For a three song run, how about Ziggy Stardust/Suffragette City/Rock and Roll Suicide?
How about Fantastic Voyage/African Night Flight/Move On for a more unconventional one? :D
We could go on for ever.
I've always wanted Eight Line Poem shunted later in the record so the opening of Hunky Dory would be Changes/Oh! You Pretty Things/Life on Mars. That would beat anything.
greatest 1-2-3 punch ever.
has the best opening three: Show of Strength, With a Hip and Over the Wall. Even though Heroes has Beauty and the Beast, Joe the Lion and Heroes... But I'm not gonna consider DB for this.
Blur has Tender/Bugman/Coffee & TV/Swamp Song and Beetlebum/Song 2/Country Sad ... which I'd say deserves a mention. Like I do ;)
B-52s Dance this Mess Around/Rock Lobster/Lava
The Delays: Wanderlust/Nearer than Heaven/Long Time Coming ... yeah, seriously.
Wolf Parade: Modern World/Grounds for Divorce/We Built Another World
Lisa Stansfield: All Around the World/This is the Right Time/Mighty Love/You Can't Deny It
Interpol: Untitled/Obstacle 1/NYC/PDA
X: We're Desperate/Adult Books/Universal Corner
Siouxsie: Spellbound/Into the Light/Arabian Knights
run on Ocean Rain.
is what immediately came to mind for me.
The latter is a pretty obvious example, but Delays never got enough kudos for that opening trio of grade-A pop goodness that starts off their debut.
Ramones-st: Blitzkreig Bop/Beat on The Brat/Judy is a Punk
The Fall-Hex Enduction Hour: The Classical/Jawbone and Air Rifle/Hip Priest/Fortress/Deer Park
Are the first three that come to mind
Boards of Canada: Kaini Industries/Bocuma/Roygbiv
Pixies: Trompe Le Monde/Planet of Sound/Alec Eiffel
But that opening trio to Trompe Le Monde is one of the most brilliant and furious opening trios ever.
down on the street; loose; tv eye
Debaser / Tame / Wave of Mutilation from Doolittle could be the best 3 opening tracks of any album for me.
Letters from me to Charlotte / The Sea is a Good Place to Think of the Future / This is a Flag, There is no Wind from Romance is Boring
Today / Hummer / Rocket or ... in fact, fuck, it's impossible to do Siamese Dream
Say It Ain't So / Holiday / Only In Dreams from Weezer's Blue.
but wimped out because Silverfuck and Mayonnaise are my two favourites and I couldn't quite anchor three arount them. If you leave them out, yours is a very good bet.
born under punches - crosseyed and painless - great curve
will also accept;
crosseyed and painless - great curve - once in a lifetime
But then, Remain in Light has an incredibly rare five-song run of solid gold - not many albums can boast that
All the wine and abel too
Aerodynamic/Digital Love/Harder Better Faster Stronger (or you can take One More Time at the start or Crescendolls at the end if you prefer).
The Beatles: And Your Bird Can Sing/For No One/Dr Robert
Doves: Catch the Sun/The Man Who Told Everything/The Cedar Room
The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton
Fall of the Star High School Running Back
Color in Your Cheeks
Jenny (4 tracks in a row!)
Good shouts on Doolittle, Ramones, Ziggy...
It's brilliant. Ordered the re-issued album.
Godless - Mohammed - Nietzche
Obliterates every silly thing Courtney Taylor-Taylor ever said/did/wore
Two Dancers (i)
Two Dancers (ii)
This is our Lot
Drunkship of Lanterns
Nine Inch Nails (Downward Spiral) - Heresy / March Of The Pigs / Closer
Ministry (The Mind Is...) - Thieves / Burning Inside / Never believe
BRMC (S/T) - Love Burns / Red Eyes & Tears / Whatever Happened To My Rock & Roll
Jane's Addiction (RITUAL...) - Obvious / Been Caught Stealing / Three Days
Aerosmith (Permanent Vacation) - SRag Doll / imoriah / Dude(Looks Like A Lady)
Amplifier (S/T) - Motorhead / Airborne / Panzer
Archie Bronson Outfit (Derdang Derdang) - Cherry Lips / Kink / Dart For My Sweetheart
Led Zep (IV) - Four Sticks / Going To California / When The Levee Breaks
Kyuss (Welcome To Sky Valley) - Gardenia / Asteroid / Supa Scoopa....
Black Angels (Passover) - Young Men Dead / First Vietnamese War / Sniper At The Gates....
Prefer the three long tracks on Ritual (Three Days, Then She Did, Of Course)
But I love Obvious
Three Days/Then She Did.../Of Course/Classic Girl
Panasonic Youth > Sunshine The Werewolf > Highway Robbery
Automatic For The People
Dirty Dream Number Two/The Boy With The Arab Strap/Chickfactor
seeing other people / me and the major / like dylan in the movies
Between those three and The State I Am In/Expectations/She's Losing It
Women Who Love Men Who Love Drugs/Saturday Morning Breakfast Show/Long Forgotten
Great start to Souvlaki
I'd go Melon Yellow / Dagger / Some Velvet Morning
I'm Happy to Be Here Tonight / Everyone Says You're So Fragile / I'm a Message
always springs to mind as a great opening trio
AS i mentioned it in another thread the other day the first 3 on moderat - moderat as well.
Keep Slipping Away
Did you see they've announced a gig at The Shacklewell Arms on Nov 9th?
but I live in Thailand, so a bit far.
But I'd go with Caramel / Trimm Trabb / No Distance Left To Run
Mansun - Six
Special/Blown It / Legacy / Being A Girl
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Nude / Weird Fishes/Arpeggi / All I Need
Modest Mouse - Good News...
The World At Large / Float On / Ocean Breathes Salty
it'd have to be the final 3 on Kings of Limbs for me
Airbag / Paranoid Android / Subterranean Homesick Alien
You and Whose Army? / I Might Be Wrong / Knives Out
Optimistic / In Limbo / Idioteque
Swervedriver (Mezcal Head): Harry & Maggie – A Change Is Gonna Come – Girl On A Motorbike
Yo La Tengo (Fade): Stupid Things – I’ll Be Around – Cornelia and Jane
Walls (Coracle): Into Our Midst – Heat Haze – Sunporch
And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead (Source Tags & Codes): It Was There That I Saw You – Another Morning Stoner – Baudelaire
Tamaryn (The Waves): Dawning – Cascades – Mild Confusion
The Waves / Choirs of Winter / Love Fade = bliss.
Joy Division: Twenty Four Hours, The Eternal, Decades
Joanna Newsom: Have One on Me, '81, Good Intentions Paving Co.
Go Long/Occident/Soft as Chalk from Have One on me but it's a tough call, the whole thing is brilliant.
I'll go with: What Did Your Last Servant Die Of? / Don't Be So Hard / A Million Miles
... but only because it's impossible to separate 3 tracks from Bizarro and Seamonsters.
Angel - Risingson - Teardrop
One of the best opening three-hit combos ever imo. Three very different songs, all with different vocalists, covering a lot of range in terms of tone and texture. Although Mezzanine - Group Four - (Exchange) is also awesome, kind of a mirror image of the first three. Such a top album.
and Unfinished Sympathy / Daydreaming / Lately combo on Blue Lines.
More Than a Feeling / Piece of Mind / Foreplay-Long Time
The whole 1st side.
Dungeness, You Know and Le Casio
Sawdust & Diamonds - Only Skin - Cosmia
Avenue / You're in a Bad Way / Hobart Paving
(from "So Tough" by Saint Etienne)
However I then always realise they stuck a stupid 23 second interlude in the middle of them. WERE THEY NOT THINKING OF THIS THREAD WHEN THEY DID THAT?
Bulletproof / Summer's Kiss / Faded
on Afghan Whigs' Black Love
takes some beating
arms against atrophy - upon viewing brueghel's landscape... - titus andronicus (the airing of grievances)
playa playa - devils pie - left and right (voodoo)
waitin for a superman - suddenly everything has changed - the gash (the soft bulletin)
ghost - untitled - two headed boy pt 2 (ITAOTS)
4th chamber - shadowboxin - hells wind staff (liquid swords)
all caps - great day today - rhinestone cowboy (madvillainy)
Any triplet on this album would be excellent though
is Nina Nastasia's Ugly Face/In The Graveyard/Ocean on The Blackened Air
i.e. you could pick a run of three from anywhere on the record.
has a very very fine run of songs, which could go from Days to I Don't Know how to Love
White Hinterland - Cataract / Huron / Magnolias
The Early Years - Things /The Simple Solution / Brown Hearts
The Verve - Life's An Ocean / Stormy Clouds/ (Reprise)
Sun Airway - Infinity / American West /Oh, Naoko
Nada Surf - Fruit Fly / Blonde On Blonde / Inside of Love
Clearlake - It's All Too Much / Treat Yourself With Kindness / Trees in the City
The Boxer Rebellion - Diamonds / Fragile / Always
This is fun!
Such a great trio (off a superb album)
Gets better and better as the years roll by; tragically underappreciated stuff. I could just have easily gone with Song For Elizabeth / Musik Der Fruhen Jahre / So Far Gone as well.
Several Girls Galore: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WV3Livj5MlA
You Never Should: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwI3QLvrhjU
Sueisfine has always been a fairly weak track to me.
Nine Inch Nails - Piggy, Heresy, March of the Pigs
Could pretty much take anything from David Comes To Life but Queen of Hearts; Under My Nose; The Other Shoe would be pretty smart.
Fucked Up are great.
Do You Love Me/Nobody's Baby Now/Loverman
Red Right Hand/I Let Love In/Thirsty Dog
The Darkest Side
You could have any 3 from Rich to Pin, really.
The final 3 tracks are quite possibly the best ending to an album that I've ever heard. 'Keep Hanging On' is a perfect raw pop song bursting with emotion. 'The Wit And The Wisdom' offers abrasive and experimental sounds much akin to the sounds on Zen Arcade. Finally 'Don't Know Yet' shows why Husker Du are one the most under rated acts of all-time. A sublime slab of psychedelia which serves to wash the album away.
I wanna be adored/She bangs the drums/Waterfall
Boilermaker/Gladiator/The Art Of Self Defense
new seeds/come to dust/semena mertvykh
So Low, So High/You Don't Know Her Name/Elouise
Tails off pretty badly after that opening trio though.
Maps Do Create some of the most insipid poogaze out there.
the Man on the Moon / Nightswimming / Find The River run on Automatic for the People is the closest to perfect any band will ever get
is pretty damn amazing too
Papa Won't Leave You Henry/I Had a Dream Joe/Straight to You
About You-Sparky's Dream (aka the old Goal of the Month song from Match of the Day)-Mellow Doubt
Don't Look Back-Verisimilitude-Neil Jung
Is This Music?
I know how Ronnie Rosenthal felt.
On The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
from 1977 by Ash
I'd probably go with the first three from Free All Angels - Walking Barefoot / Shining Light / Burn Baby Burn. Perfect power pop!
Operation Mindcrime / Speak / Spreading The Disease
Metallica - Ride The Lightning
Ride The Lightning / For Whom The Bell Tolls / Fade To Black
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
Don't Stop / Go Your Own Way / Songbird
Van Halen - Van Halen I
Running With The Devil / Eruption/You Really Got Me / Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love
Lard - The Last Temptation Of Reid
Forkboy / Pineapple Face / Mate, Spawn & Die / Drug Raid At 4am
Ladytron - Velocifero
Black Cat / Ghosts / I'm Not Scared / Runaway
Am I Wry? No , 156 , Snowbrigade
She Came Home For Christmas / SheSpider / Comforting Sounds is a blatantly superior trio of songs.
but right now, at this specific moment in time, the opening salvo to Siamese Dream is purest emoji praise hands
Without MSG I Am Nothing / That Man Will Not Hang / She Will Only Bring You Happiness
war pigs/paranoid/planet caravan/iron man
Night -> Backstreets -> Born to Run
Now all go back to work.
