Fucking great, eh?
but the stuff he sings on is somethin' else (tm)
I got into him since he kept popping up on the sidebar on Youtube when I was listening to James Blackshaw. Just read how he died... grim
I've only really heard bits and bobs on the internet through an interest in Fahey/Kottke/Lang/Rose etc.
After a brief google, it seems this record is being reissued shortly for the first time..
I first heard Robbie Basho about six days ago, and of course there's a thread on DiS posted in the past two weeks. Anyway, I clicked on one of the related videos while watching a John Fahey video on YouTube and out came 'Blue Crystal Fire'. It's amazing.
Then I listened to 'Orphan's Lament' and I've listened to it quite a great deal since then. His voice is so arresting. It's one of the saddest songs I've heard... I read he himself was an orphan and the pain is right there in his voice and the lyrics. And yet despite this it's not a song that grabs me and drags me down - like 'It's Easier Now' by Jason Molina, say - there's hope and beauty mixed in as well. I'd love to own Visions of the Country. A real gem. For now I'll just wait and stick with my YouTube playlist.
