Debut vs discography

funkycow [Edit] [Delete] 30 replies 01:14, 5 July '13

From this day forth you can only listen to either a band's debut OR their discography less their debut. Which do you pick?

Pavement - debut for me

  • some bands are like Sophie's Choice

Talking Heads for one. "don't take my babyyyy."

    bastard_of_the_north | 5 Jul '13, 02:11 | X
  • The Mars Volta

I'd take the discography over Deloused, no regrets whatsoever.

    Sloame_Ocean | 5 Jul '13, 12:06 | X
    • Really?

I would do the complete opposite ta. Although if I was on a desert island that would be a different matter, I'd go more for volume of music in that case.

      • Don't get me wrong, I love Deloused but...

it's definitely the album of theirs that I return to the least. In many respects, it feels like Deloused was made by a different band to the music that came subsequently and I think I prefer the band they became with Frances the Mute through to the Bedlam in Goliath...

        • Bedlam In Goliath

is their best album. Not the most popular opinion but it is the one what I have.

discography bit of a no brainer though. same applies for belle and sebastian and pavement. wowee zowee is their finest hour in my book, followed by crcr.

    • I LOVE WOWEE ZOWEE SO MUCH

Not as much as CRCR though.

      Nirvana
      The Wedding Present
      X
Wire (yes I know the rest is amazing, but Pink Flag is plenty enough for me)

      Broken Social Scene
      The Cure
      Cocteau Twins

It's a tragedy losing "Custom Concern" and "Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset", but I can live because I have Moon & Antarctica and Lonesome Crowded West.

  • So few bands where I'd take the debut

mostly ones I loved when I was younger

    Arctic Monkeys
    Maximo Park
    The Strokes
    Art Brut
    The New Pornographers
    Archers of Loaf
    Galaxie 500
    Mazzy Star
    Suede

    maybe R.E.M. actually!

  • Hell no funkycow!

There's too much good stuff in the rest of the Pavement catalogue to give up. I just can't do it, but then again never hear Summer Babe, Zurich is Stained or Two States again... argh. So hard, why you make me choose? No, I'm right - if it was Crooked Rain then maybe I'd take your ultimatum but I'm sticking with everything but the debut.

    El_Goodo | 6 Jul '13, 14:26 | X
    • summer babe's on westing so that's fine
