^This yes or no
imagine seeing The Fall for fucks sake
don't be stupid
if it's a new one with one or two albums I probably will end up listening to them a bit the couple days leading up to it. If it's a bigger band that I'm a huge fan of there's not much point, half the fun will be being surprised by songs I might have forgotten about. On the other hand if it's a casual band I don't really care about I'll give whatever they have out a listen or two on the day of the gig just to get an idea about them.
obviously I've failed to answer the question and instead replied to a made up one in my head. Good night.
And thus this not actually having a massive impact on my listening time but I always do this. It's simply a case of listening to an album or two a day and not pressing skip when normally I might.
Can definitely see how it would be a bit mental if I went to a lot of gigs as it might take up time I could be listening to new stuff. That's the only thing that would stop me though, as if a band had gone off the cliff at some stage in their career it's likely I wouldn't own all the albums I didn't like.
do you go wearing the band's shirt to their show as well?
I get the surprise thing but surely that's what b-sides, non0album releases, new material, covers, reworked versions, extended instrumentals and live only set closers are for?
Listening to the albums before hand is part of the anticipatory pre-gig ritual for me.
= completely unacceptable
mostly because it's a bit disconcerting to see other people react to songs the band are playing when I have no idea of what they are.
but I don't overdo it, I don't want to be bored of them. Recently I have been going to setlist.fm, checking out what they actually play at gigs. Especially if I am a fan of the band but have skipped an album or two (I did this for Trail of Dead recently for example). Then I listen to the songs I am not familiar with, especially if there is some amazing new encore or set closer which I have not heard.
ended up listening to Last Splash loads and loads before going to see Breeders play it.
Ended up missing almost all of their set anyway
