Glastonbury reaction thread
quite enough of all the armchair Glastonbury talk. Who was there? Great weekend, non?
Portishead won for me, closely followed by Fuck Buttons

Portishead was one of the best things I have seen in my entire life.
Utterly, utterly, utterly brilliant. And Beth's little "I hope it was alright" at the end. Wow...
Great weekend overall - didn't see a single weak set
fuck buttons
was the best show ive ever seen. plenty of fantastic sets tho, dinosaur jr killed it. frabbit, savages, badbadnotgood, arctic monkeys, ed harcourt, ondatropica, phoenix, vampire weekend, elvis costello, billy bragg and rustie were all pretty stellar to unforgettable.
glad you enjoyed Ed Harcourt's set. there was some evil technical gremlins but it turned out alright.
^thinly veiled
...and I believe we're still awaiting your legal response to this: http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/social/4432428
I'll concur with the Portishead consensus
Other highlights were 65daysofstatic who were amazing on Williams Green. Phoenix ended everything in a fantastically fun way. Really enjoyed Johnny Marr, and SixbySeven on Thursday were great too. Too many to mention really.
Only let down was The Smashing Pumpkins. That wasn't The Smashing Pumpkins. That was a tribute act which got Billy Corgan to join them. And they murdered Disarm.
That's what Smashing Pumpkins is now dude.
It's a shite state of affairs, I know.
Breaks my heart.
Yeah they could really do with the other two who barely wrote a note.
and are now either rubbish or a washed up smack head splitting their time between a farm and jail.

They sounded fine on the telly and good songs are still brilliant but I'm kind of Corgan's side in all this even though he is an enormous bell end.
...
'barely wrote a note' - you're wrong there. 'barely PLAYED a note' is more accurate for the first couple of albums!
No idea why people are so obsessed with it 'not being the Smashing Pumpkins' when really, it was always a solo project.
heard some of that on the radio
and they're even worse live now than they were back in The Day. and they were absolutely awful then...
What was the new 65days stuff like?
They played one new song with a new guy and it was quite slow
built up but was aiming to be be quite 'emotional' I think
pumpkins sounded good
corgan seems to be enjoying himself.
was anyone there for Django Django?....their set looked great.
yep
was there for that
was really good.
much better than the record live.
Same with Jagwar Ma.
Pretty good overall
Nick Cave was immense. I agree with you lot about Portishead. Elvis Costello was great. Primal Scream had an off-day. I enjoyed Frightened Rabbit, Goat, Billy Bragg, First Aid Kit, PiL, Foals. Stones were OK - glad I saw them but they weren't spectacular. Partly regret not seeing PE, Calexico, Fuck Buttons instead.
Highlight was Portishead by some distance
Didn't expect that to be anywhere near as intense as it was. Hives were good fun, 6x7 were excellent (played the new album in full) and Phoenix ended on a high. PiL surprised slightly (thought they'd be much more ordinary) and the Hell Stage was pretty intense at 3am.
Missed an absolute bucketload of stuff, but that's pretty much ineviatable and didn't see anything much that disappointed.
Chic were poor.
Nah mate.
NO
Again?!
you really are fed up with your life aren't you?
wasn't there, but I see no mention of the Stones
are you all too indie, or did you go and not enjoy it, or did you go and it was as amazing as I fear it was?
they looked grotesque on the tv
I was there for the first few songs
but it was like watching the Stones play on a TV in a flat across the road with a small window open
Went
And it was OK. Nice atmosphere, they were polished and played the hits, but I was too far away to feel part of it. Best thing was hearing 2000 Light Years From Home - according to setlist.fm it's the first time they've played it since 1990.
The half of the set where they were, erm, playing Rolling Stones songs, was great
The half where they had ten minute guitar/saxaphone noodles less so. And Ronnie Wood is carrying Keith Richards. But well worth seeing.
Anyone else make it to Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich's sets in Heaven?
I was there Saturday, pretty good once inside but what was that queuing system all about?
Nick Cave was absolutely phenomenal...
at his demonic best. My mate had never seen him live and is now purchasing his back catalogue based on the performance alone. Tupelo, From Her to Eternity, The Mercy Seat as well as new stuff (Push the Sky Away was beautiful). But it was Stagger Lee that won the day and was my festival highlight- the look of fear and awe on the face of the girl in the crowd as he launched the Stagger Lee / Devil confrontation verse will live with me forever.
Fuck Buttons were great too..new stuff sounds intense and full of bass. Simian Mobile Disco on the Spirit of '71 stage were superb although the crowd was very poor. Also i thought Public Image Limited were great as it was a greatest hits set in effect. Also caught the tail end of I am Kloot, a band I had heard nothing by previously, which was really good especially a song I think was called Radiation. Fuckin' awesome time though...Glasto is a pretty special place.
Loved it all
Went with a very different grop year so ended up catching acts I normally wouldn't have and that was great.
Highlights included:
Django Django (as above much better live than recorded)
London Grammar
Vaccines (at Williams Green)
Frightend Rabbit
Phoenix
Fat Boy Slim!
Jessie Ware
Ms Mr
The south east corner and silver hayes were so much fun at night and visually stunning
One of the best Glastonbury's I'd been to.
Portishead
The Hives (Had the audience eating out of their hand within minutes)
Pheonix
Toy
Daughter
Apart from Thursday night, the ground was pretty much as good as it gets.
I saw The Hives and Phoenix of those five
and both were great. I loved the Phoenix set - it was so well put together that I was astonished to find it was only just over 50 minutes long when I looked at my watch afterwards. Those were 50 pretty bloody perfect minutes.
One of my highlights...
Was lordscopie managing to put suntan lotion on. Down to his wristband. And wandering around (well, limping around is more accurate) with a bright red hand.
Oh and Portishead who were flipping flawless.
tell me it was his right hand
then tell me you saw nick cave
well good eh.
Django Django, Dry the River and Alt-J on the Williams Green stage were all excellent. The former especially, exactly what I needed. My wife said Dry the River were even better on the Other Stage.
The Hives were excellent fun.
It was awesome to see so many people fucking loving Foals, and I thought their set was great.
Portishead was so good I think part of me changed. The drum sound for Machine Gun rattled every bit of me.
I Am Kloot were lovely, though I'd have loved to hear something off Natural History because I'm selfish.
Frightened Rabbit were great, they sounded suitably massive.
The small crowd for Calexico was pretty disappointing, but they seemed pretty happy (after it took ages to get them on ("yeah we're ready... five minutes ago"). Probably the best I've seen them.
Saw a little of Hurts. The first two massive Depeche Mode gothy rock songs were good if a bit silly, then they did a few more synthy ones and we got bored very fast.
Saw a few Rolling Stones tunes. Glad we didn't bother with the whole lot.
I enjoyed Phill Jupitus poetry slot on Left Field a lot, we sort of stumbled on it by accident.
I watched a bit of Terakaft but the tunes were a bit samey and I got a little dis-interested which was a shame.
I saw Goats set on West Holts which was good, but the sound wasn't great (which I thought was pretty rare across the weekend), wish I'd got over to their Hell stage set really.
Ulrich Schnauss was quite the wake up on Sunday morning, I was loving that, though the strobes were hard going.
Everything Everything were pretty ace, and I enjoyed the little of Public Service Broadcasting I saw.
Nick Cave was Nick Cave, and thus incredible. And I got a flurry of texts and tweets to say I'd been on TV during it.
Did a set on Williams Green doing visuals with REVERE, which was really good fun, although getting stuff to look right on that screen was hard work.
The whole thing was, as always, great fun. Feel like there's tons of stuff I didn't get to see, but I'm not sure where I'd have fitted it all in.
Sitting up on the hill on Sunday night was a great way to finish off the festival.
Highlights
Nick Cave-As above, Stagger Lee was incredible
Chic-Can't see why people didn't like this, as i thought it was incredible
Savages 2x-Probably their better set for me was at William's Green, and was just really solid. They just have a mesmerising stage presence in my opinion
65daysofstatic-Worked the crowd well, and I'm looking forward to seeing them later in the summer
Django Django-Gig at william's green. Really good, and helps prove that a lot od percussion normally makes for a good live show
Bobby Womack-Good way to finish off the weekend, and although I know little of his stuff was really enjoyable. Also nice to see Damon Albarn show up
Zun Zun Egui-Could have done with a better slot, but were good nonetheless, and I got a signed CD
Goat-Just a lot of fun
I did see the Stones who were quite good but it was a shame about the clashes they had. Thankfully I am seeing Fuck Buttons later in the summer which is good.
Pretty sure nobody actually disliked Chic
Aside from about five needy bedwetters live posting on here as they watched it on a live stream :DDD
Foals the best set for me
Went with a group of people who have quite a wide range of music and wanted to enjoy it with them so compromised a few times. Have to say though that major disappointments were Alt-J and Tame Impala. The latter seemed to play all of their songs at half-speed. Opted for Arctic Monkeys just for some fun but regretting it with all the Portishead comments. Having said that, people like Ben Howard and Of Monster and Men at least put some energy into their performances. Enjoyed them both more than I thought I ever would...
Six By Seven were a little dull for me. I was wanting a greatest hits set.
Fuck Buttons were brilliant. Villagers fantastic. Daughter good but slightly muffled vocals. Enjoyed Savages too.
disappointments were Alt-J and Tame Impala. The latter seemed to play all of their songs at half-speed.

Exactly the same issue with Tame Impala Glasto 2011! They really are still one of the worst live bands I have ever seen. But apparently they're good when they aren't at a festival... but I dunno whatevs
Portishead the clear highlight
Thought Local Natives and James Blake absolutely nailed it in the John Peel tent.
This might be something to do with the fact the sound was good, clear and LOUD in there for the first time in years. At least it was down the front.
Managed to catch a fair bit of poetry and word, and some stand up too which was great.
The scale of glastonbury, and its assault on your senses is absolutely ridiculous now. In all my years going, I have never felt so worried that i was missing out on 50 other awesome things at any one time.
The sound seemed to be much better in the John Peel tent on Sunday
nick cave was ridiculously brilliant
then dry the river, and savages, and foals, and bobby womack. haim were adorable. dinosaur jr smashed it. frightened rabbit did the job.
one of my best glastos ever.
oh yeah, and i saw the rolling stones
seem to be one of the lucky people who could hear them at a decent volume, we were nowhere near the stage but quite near one of the speaker towers. some of it was kind of all over the place but tbh i don't give a shit, they were never about precision. it was the ROLLING FUCKING STONES and they played tons of hits and i loved it, so there.
Absolutely this!
Im so glad I didn't sacrifice sound for sight.
I really really enjoyed them.
I have been going through the red button on BBC
loads of stuff on there, whole sets from a host of people. Enjoyed Dinosaur Jr, bloody hell they are doing well for oldies.
Portishead and Goat
were my highlights.
I really enjoyed Billy O'Corgan and his band too having never seen them before. Agree with those confused by the 'real' pumpkins thing. It was always just him.
Yeah I really enjoyed the Pumpkins too!
Although I did miss the first few new songs...
r disappointments were Alt-J and Tame Impala. The latter seemed to play all of their songs at half-speed.
