I'm 50-50 on whether I fancy going with no Kim Deal. I went to one of their Troxy gigs a few years ago; a very good gig.
don't think I would have gone anyway except possibly out of morbid curiosity, but that takes the decision away
so was it Kim Shattuck singing the chorus on Bagboy then?
even though Pixies are my favourite band of all time and I'm pretty much a superfan (collect memorabilia, bootlegs etc etc). I saw them 7 times in 3 countries on the Sell Out tour and this will be too strange.
They will carry on doing very well commercially though and I'm very pleased for them, especially Dave Lovering. Dave is a great drummer but not a leader, and he was lost and more or less totally broke in the years between Pixies activity. Now he has a good steady income and a career again. Good on them.
Probably my favourite band, but this is just all too weird. T'ain't the same without Kim.
it doesn't make sense for a cash-strapped wilwal/atp/whatever to add a mega expensive band to be added to an already sold out festival...?
would be silly IMO
i won't be going. deerhunter atp made me realise though i love pixies i prefer breeders and kim deal reigns over frank
and it's possible that pixies wouldnt be that expensive
and it's possible that they booked them before it sold out but haven't been allowed to announce it yet for a million reasons
just think they are too big for minehead
i'm going to the other one though so would be jealous
but Fuck Buttons supported Pixies before, so ATP and Pixies have previously been in contact.
I saw them twice on the reunion tour. That's enough. Now that Kim's gone I won't go anywhere near a gig of theirs.
from The Muffs has one of the best screams in rock.
Accept no imitations. There's only one Pixies: Kim and Dave and Joey and Charles. This is three of the Pixies playing Pixies covers.
(I'll probably go anyway....I'm perfectly OK with giving my money to Dave and Joey)
And although I was being a bit facetious, they always struck me as one of those bands where everyone's important. I mean, compare Black's solo work with the Pixies - he wrote all the songs, but the ones he wrote in the Pixies are much much better than any of his solo ones. I'm sure Kim and Dave and Joey played a big part in that.
Plus the last couple of times they played here, he was ignoring the crowd and she was the only one interacting.
Hopefully you're right and this new guy is good and they come out with some decent new material....
They've always struck me as the perfect example of a band where every member is crucial to their sound. The idea of someone else doing all those lovely backing vocals is just kinda wrong...
Frank Black and Teenager of the year are brilliant albums. Arguably better than the last 2 Pixies albums. And maybe he wants to write songs that sound different. He's also got Frank Black and the Catholics, which sound different to any of his other stuff as well - then there's his acoustic stuff. Basically he's a musician with a lot of different creative outputs.
In regards to Kim Deal v Black Francis interaction with the crowd, going to disgree with you there as well. I've only seen them twice - once at Brixton and once at Benicassim. At Brixton, FB was the only one that spoke to the crowd - and I think Dave Lovering. At Benicassim, Kim Deal literally could not be bothered to talk to the crowd. The front few rows of fans were calling to her, and she just conpletely ignored them - to the point that Frank actually said on stage - Kim, they're saying hello to you. Kim still didn't respond.
Wasn't she a huge reason why they fell out in the first place? I haven't seen documentary, but wasn't her heroin addiction a huge reason why they split?
I saw them at Brixton on the Doolittle shows and at the Troxy (their most recent London date, I think). And at those shows it was very much Kim talking, Frank saying nothing. Though thinking back to 2004/5 I think Frank may have talked more.
Don't agree with you on Frank solo v the last two Pixies albums (I genuinely think all their albums are near-perfect at least) but it would be a sad world if we all agreed on everything....
as if it matters in the tiniest bit
and I couldn't in all good conscience claim that without Kim (Deal).
...for that reason, ahm oot.
I'm definitely going to get tickets.
Kim Deal's left then. Okay.
Its fine, the new bassist sounds just like her.
If Radiohead toured without Colin, would you go? Has anyone ever said "I'm not going to see The Stones because Bill Wyman isn't paying bass any more."? Did anyone abandon Underworld when Darren Emerson left? Or mores to the point, Leslie Langston leaving Throwing Muses.
I saw Pixies on their second ever British date, and again on that first tour supporting Throwing Muses, then on the first headlining tour and every other tour. So Kim's left, it's a shame but I love the Pixies music so I will go and see them just like I'm going to see Echo & the Bunnymen again on Friday.
Quit being pussies. X
her backing vocals are a major part of the band's sound, so distinctive. Her contribution is incomparable to those examples you gave...
the new guy sounded exactly like Kim to the point where people thought it was her.
good singer though. Should be alreet.
I'd be pretty devastated if Colin left Radiohead, just stood there, at the back minding his own business, laying down the funk
all bouncing about with his cock out.
I'd love to see Ed punch Flea in the face
the reunion to this point has been entirely predicated on it being the chance for the thousands of people who got into the band after they split to make like it's 1991 again - new material and a new line up obviously changes what the reunion means.
But for some bands, it feels (to me) like the classic lineup is the only lineup. The Who without Keith Moon? Not really the Who. Stone Roses without Squire or Reni - not really the Roses. On the other hand, I could imagine the Smiths being the Smiths as long as Morrissey and Marr were still there, or The Stones being the Stones even without Jones and Wyman. I'm not sure there's any logic to it. It's just a visceral reaction.
was an amazing show
missed th eirish centre one on the next tour
Yes it was, so ace I ventured to London on the weekend, got a shitty hotel in Seven Sisters and paid on the door at the Town and Country club. Irish Centre had My Bloody Valentine supporting, what were you thinking!?
Yeah, she was an undeniably integral part of the original line up, but this reunion has been going on for like 10 years. Is that what people want, just to see the old band playing the same old songs?
It's got to a point now where I'm happy they're going to be putting some new stuff out, regardless of the line up. If it's not great, who cares.
But for me, without Kim it ain't Pixies. I'd rather they just split again. I'll get the new album, I'll probably like it a lot, but I'd much rather it was billed as a FB solo album. But that wouldn't make as much wonga, so that's fine. Although FB always seemed very against trading on his past, and the others must surely have made enough wonga over the past ten years... But it's up to them. Doubt I'll go see them again. Blah blah. Just sits awkwardly with me.
has never seen pixies and keeps missing them. i asked her if she'd like to go as i wasn't sure due to kim deal leaving and she laughed at me like "who cares? let's go and see pixies". i really do think we stress the small stuff a little too much sometimes.
the reason i am not going is because they have been phoning it in too much of late for me
the ally pally one was rubbish until tame when they finally woke up
really below par
only saw them 3 times before they split up & each time was magical
(muses support show, doolittle tour & bossanova tour. doolittle was the best, despite it not being their best album)
seen them 5 times since
the first two in brixton were ace because they were back, paris was cool, ally pally half & half & the doolittle anniversary show just showed me i don't like whole album gigs
And I'm very pleased about that.
So I know everything there is to know about it!
And: it seems to me that there isn't any beef between Kim Deal and the rest of the band. She just didn't want the Pixies to record a new album, because she didn't think it was right to.
She had an interview with Rolling Stone where she was asked about whether there would be a new album, and she said that she wouldn't be involved if there was. When asked why, she said that she just didn't think it would be right and that she'd heard the last Rolling Stones album was really good, but she'd never listen to it.
I disagree I think, although I can totally see what she means.
Flipping heck, didn't realise how bad David Lovering was with substance abuse when they first reformed - think he's fine now though.
for her to call the shots as to whether they record new material or not. Especially if the rest of the band really wanted to.
Dave Lovering was on the scrap heap when they reformed - performing as a magician. He said on the documentary that it was a dream come true that the band had reformed.
Not to mention that the new song is really good.
How much are they charging?
