The Flaming Lips gig at The Roundhouse tonight has been cancelled.

I use to be a fan but find their shows too repetitive. They haven't changed since the late 90s and hence gave these gigs a miss. Just to give you guys a heads up to save yourselves a trip to Chalk Farm.

  • Should probably have used the word 'postponed'

    • Think it's probably more than a spider bite this time.

Must be awful to be on the other side of the world wondering what's left of your homes, family and friends

      • I agree with the sentiment

but this was announced before the hurricane, right? I got an email just before 4pm yesterday.

  • So what were he Lips like tonight?

I'm going to Brighton show tomorrow night and interested to hear what the current tour is like. I've also invite some non-fan friends on the basis of their shows always bein a massive spectacle and worried they might have gone a bit serious and be lacking all the Race for the Prize style ridiculousness!

    • It was refreshingly different to recent years

The biggest thing for me is that they seemed to be playing everything fully live rather than using lots of backing tracks like they seemed to previously (certainly songs that they've played a lot in recent years were a bit different in arrangement & structure).
The Terror stuff sounded great live (and made up a big chunk of the set), and the rest of the setlist was quite a significant shake up to the last 5 or so years.
Don't want to spoil it too much by going into specifics on songs & stage setup, but expect less ridiculousness (most of the old 'gimmicks' are gone), but a great show.

      • Did he say 'come on motherfuckers' after every song?

Because he did at Ally Pally and it really fucked me off. Considering maybe trying to get a Roundhouse ticket for the rescheduled show as there's bound to be people who now can't make it.

        • Not as much as usual

The first half of the gig he seemed quite restrained, but in the second he rambled a bit and Stephen kept asking him if he was ready for each song.
He was clearly still quite ill though so maybe when he's back to full health the 'come on motherfuckers' will be back!

  • What time did they come on?

Brighton got says 9.30 but that seems a bit late, and has been like that since the show was announced, so wondering of that's more of a guess.

Kind of worried about tonight. Knew it'd be quite different but was still hoping for some of the old tricks!

    The_Seagull | 22 May '13, 13:55 | X
    • They were on at 9

And it was a 2 hr set.

Don't think it was lacking in 'tricks' as there was still an amazing light show and the stage setup is pretty special (trying to avoid spoilers on that!). Setlist from last night is up on setlist.fm if you want to see what they played - some pleasant surprises in terms of older stuff you wouldn't normally see them play.

      ghbradshaw @The_Seagull | 22 May '13, 14:14 | X
  • Well that was fantastic

As with the Roundhouse, it was pretty heavy on stuff from The Terror, which suited me fine as I think it's their best album in ages.

Really glad that they've shaken up their whole performance - the old setup was great fun but getting quite tired.

  • Agreed - it felt like a proper event

The Dome was the right place for it too - It would have been rubbish if it had been at the Brighton Centre.

I can picture the setup being the amazing headline set at Glastonbury that everyone talks about for weeks afterwards.

  • So the rescheduled show is tonight.

After parents got me thoroughly jealous by seeing them at Brighton Dome, I'm tempted to go. If anyone has a couple of tickets spare, I'd be interested in grabbing them off your hands.

  • I decided to go last night, picked up a ticket for £30 from a tout

It was an excellent show and really refreshing to see them do something different. I was a bit jaded about the Lips after the Soft Bulletin C'MON MOTHERFUCKERS show but this reaffirmed my love for them.

A girl in the audience had what I think was an epileptic fit from the strobes and that shaved a good 15 mins off the stage time but I'm not sure we lost anything from the setlist or not.

Good sound, nice and loud (Steven's guitar sounded amazing during The W.A.N.D) and a great light show (not so great if you suffer from epilepsy) made it a lovely evening.
