with all the expectation behind this I really don't think it's a stretch to say it's the worst album of the year.
this is probably the best electronic album ever. Just listen to those hooks on tracks 3 & 7. Makes their previous work sound like one of those Ibiza Chillout albums.

More listenable than I expected. Guest tracks mostly deliver. General epic and classy vibe. Touch though: wtf!!!
Loving it - effortlessly cool sounding so far.
Some of it's good, but it's getting heavily weighed down by dross. Why are they ripping off Justice (who are themselves Daft Punk rip-offs) on the last track?
If it didn't spend half the song pretending to be a BBC4 documentary and just carried on with the synths.

nah, I recorded this off the telly. remember when we were in Spain DJing? I was watchin' the telly at 4am and I just plugged it into my laptop and recorded it straight off there
but i'm a bit puzzled for all the excitement over this. Their last record got pretty solidly slated when it came out and it seemed (to me, at least) that their career was in the doldrums until they did that big tour a few years later with all the lasers and stuff. Was Tron Legacy really that good?

I think part of it the whole EDM thing in America, they seem to be kind of revered as godfathers of that whole slightly confusing scene, and it didn't really spring up until post Human After All.
but also: probably can't really underestimate the fact that the actual lack of impact made by Human After All and Tron probably cleared the way for this to get hyped

...and it sounds sick to me. Much less electronic, funky. Not sure about the end to track 3 mind.
Track 4&5 were prett lame...
i thought there'd be a cool section at the end that got cut off, but no it's just the same but longer.

but yeah this was....no.
The track with Casablancas is actually the best so far, which I'm a bit surprised about. But so far at least, this album's just got all the hallmarks of a record where they've been given too much time and money to fanny about with no creative control and too many collaborators inhibiting the sense of a coherent album. The Moroder track is such a joke it should be tied up and buried in a concrete vault under the sea, for human ears never to have to endure again. The strings on Touch sound like something off one of my nan's Andy Williams albums from the 60's and I don't mean that in a good way.
Stylistically, they seem confused. There's evident hints to their first couple of albums (the bridge of Get Lucky sounds like Harder Better... for a bit) but then there's just pastiches to disco and a very early Ibiza sound; but it just feels like a re-hash, aren't they supposed to be better than this?
I'll certainly give this a few more listens and see if it grows, but I'm not overly confident I'm going to find hidden depths in this.
The last 2 tracks are fantastic.
Absolutely no flow though, sounds like the album's on shuffle. But the tracks themselves are really good.
All i could imagine was mulleted session musicians in pastel suits playing fretless bass.

Thought me iPod had skipped onto Kate Bush.
Most of the tracks are really dull and don't progress or go anywhere interesting at all and just sound flat and boring. The only songs I really enjoyed were Giorgio by Moroder and Contact.
Oh well, maybe it might improve on repeated listens but I doubt it.

Pleasant as background music when you're doing something else, start paying attention and it all gets a bit tedious.

I think it is def good background music but gets better when you actually pay attention to it.

That literally erases any meaningful distinction between genius and failure, it is a modern classic in the truest, most oxymoronic sense of the word. It is a subtle banger, an arrhythmic assault which is so effective that the back swing turns in on itself and becomes a 4/4 slab of ibiza vapidity.
It is the aural equivalent of Jackson Pollock stepping back from his canvas and seeing that he has daubed the words 'no likey, no lighty'
It is the record that proves that we are all in it together.

it's awful. I honestly wasn't expecting a lot, especially after listening to Get Lucky, and taking into account everything they've said about moving away from traditional EDM. But... wow. This record is a disaster not because they've moved away from their roots, but because they've done it spectacularly awfully. Nothing flows, its boring, the songs with Pharrell sound like bedroom mashups, and they've even made Nile Rogers' guitar work sound dull.
You could argue that after 20 years, a new Daft Punk record was always going to be ripped to shreds because of the expectations placed upon it. But even if this album was recorded by some other artist, it would still be pretty terrible.

I think it's basically because (some) American's are finally starting to listen to (some) electronic stuff rather than just Creedence and the Stones and whatever Pitchfork indie they all listen to.
It's a bit silly.
As a side subject - I've been using an EDM for the last 15 years:
Big band jazz, salsa, classical minuets & waltzes, line dancing music, disco... Not trying to defend EDM though, it's clearly a bullshit phrase for wankers.

So disappointed. Cannot believe a band that were once so exciting and original have produced a record that is so unimaginative, fruitless and completely lifeless. The decent moments on Contact, Motherboard and Instant Crush certainly don't make up for how average most of it is and how laughable some parts are. It can't be as bad as I think? I need another listen.
i'm amazed anyone can be disappointed in them. after all these years the one thing they truly need is a decent editor, half the tracks on this and HAA could be pruned by a few minutes. they often just go on and on forever bafflingly with nothing much happening.
still some great bits on RAM like.
...aside from Instant Crush, which is great, but i am surprised that people placed so much weight of expectation on it. i'm tempted to ignore all the ludicrous hyperbole, all the equally ludicrous counterblast and come back to it in a few months when i might be able to actually listen to the tunes and make up my own mind.
...and i will. i was just having a crack at all these largely pointless 'snap judgments', as the OP suggests.
I was really expecting to hate it after reading through this thread and seeing so many of my compadres bashing it.
...snap judgements give off, for good or bad, both frustrate and anger me. Mr.Bones said it perfectly above, but yeah, its my problem, i know - but hey, at least i'm wise to it - most exist in total ignorance as they spew their bullshit. need to build myself a hype/backlash proof shelter in my addled brain.

Can't believe all the love for Instant Crush because it's easily one of the worst songs on the album for me. Sounds like a bonus track from an already shit album (Comedown Machine). After a few more listens my best tunes are Give Life Back To Music, Doin' It Right, Giorgio by Moroder and, despite how utterly daft it is, Touch. Overall though, an absolutely crushing disappointment of a record for me, so much so that I even cancelled my pre-order. Had a horrid sinking feeling in my stomach when it ended for the first time.
I think there are times where the live instrumentation actually proves to be a hindrance. Contact, for example, could have been a superb electro banger without those live drums, but instead it sounds like an ELP track or some shit.
I'm praying that it grows on me.
They just didn't work for me - not enough presence. Only streamed the album once, but I enjoyed it a lot. It's got hooks to spare and, yeah, it's overwrought and cheesy, but Discovery was in places too. It's all part of the fun.

Come one, it's a bit boring isn't it? I actually really like the single too. All seems 'nice' enough but it's over-long and a bit bland. No real new ideas.
I've not followed them very closely since Homework, but it's just a progression of that cheesy, MOR sound they developed since then.
well it's really well produced? Sounds great right? Getting all these 'Adult Contemporary' vibes in places. Feelings a bit mixed on that. I really like Get Lucky. That Giorgio track was brilliant, but the way they've mixed his talking on top sounds pretty terrible. Like someone mentioned above, very BBC documentary-like. Nice surprise hearing Panda Bear in Doin' It Right.
Obviously I'm gonna need to give this more listens, but at the moment it's probably a pretty solid 8/10.

especially after how promising Get Lucky was. An 8 might be a little bit generous, it's an inconsistent mess of an album in places.
Hyped to insane levels, then everyone realises suddenly its a 7/10 rather than a 9/10, and they all start treating it like a 2/10.
Get Lucky, Giorgio and Contact are good, the other two Nile Rodgers ones and Panda Bear one are bearable, the rest is utter crap. Bloated prog bollocks.
...but I love this record. I can't place why but it reminds me of the subdued moments of the Super Furry Animals between Rings Around The World and Phantom Power. Touch is about my favourite thing ever.
I have gone wrong
and I'm still loving this album. So many moments of pure joy, definitely one of my favourite albums of the year on first few listens.
Listened to it about five times, I think it's their best album. Doesn't have their best songs, but as a whole it's brilliant.
(minus the bit about it being their best album)

It's loadsa fun to hear people spunk millions of dollars on the album that they wanted to make, and one that bizarrely seems to attempt to atone for their own influence in/dismay at the current generation of dance music. Sure, it's old men shaking their fists at clouds, but doing so with such abandon at the one window of opportunity when everyone will be paying attention.
Tbh the previews convinced me that I'd hate RAM, but the sense of adventure, fun and dexterity it combines with MOR-rock is charming. It's far from perfect, it's fucking ridiculous, and it's certainly not going to appeal to all fans of 'alternative' music, but in the end they clearly don't give a shit... I like that.

But this all sounds worryingly like the debut Aeroplane album, which was one of the most terrible events of the last few years
Wasn't massively looking forward to it after the single, initial listen was disappointing but it's really working for me now. Kind of reminds me of a commercial version of the Innerzone Orchestra album, one of my favourite records but also one I found immensely underwhelming when I first heard it.
Maybe why people are hating the flow of the album so much. And it definitely is an 'album'.

FLAC knocking about that's 5 times the size of the stream rip and it's much punchier and fuller. the stream was terrible thin and weedy. just saying, i'm sure you're all going to buy it anyway lest DP starve or something.
First, I was surprised that every freakin' music fan was drooling over the release of this lp. After awhile, even I got caught up in it! I don't know why?!! THEN - I read an interview with Daft Punk and they said positive things about that piece of shit Skrillex. "Maybe he's the kid who'll break through..." That made me think maybe I know more about music than THEY do. Now I'm back to not caring about this album. I'll just wait for Avalanches again, I guess.
Or some nonsense like that. still pretty impressive considering the overall decline in album sales these days, guess that $35mil on advertising may come good in the end?

live drums don't suit this at all. Would have been a quality track if it had a drum machine. Its just awkward without. Could have been like a mix of Areodynamite and Veridis Quo but its just not here or there really. Only heard the single, which was a bit tamne for me and this so far, so no other opinion.
can't say i heard anything else he did but one more time is pretty much one of the best songs ever.

I was perhaps unduly harsh.
I still stand by my initial feeling it works better as backing music. Actually sitting listening to it (finally with some decent headphones) does reveal some neat touches in some of the songs which weren't immediately apparent.
But . . . it just doesn't hang together as an album for me. With some cutting it might just work. I can listen to the two halves of the album either side of Touch (which just doesn't work for me at all) individually put try and listen to it all at once and I'll find my attention wavering.

I realized I was wrong and bumped her up to a 8.1 BNM.
Though I was aware they'd given it a good score as I'd spotted it on the old ADM aggreagator.
I think it's more getting over the disappointment that it was Discovery mk 2.0, so any slagging off on me about this should be that I was still expecting to get what I wanted despite all the evidence to the contrary!

seeing how many people commenting negatively are going to completely 180 by the end of the year. Because it's going to happen. I don't care how determined you are to hate this album. This is as much of a milestone as Discovery was. Dance music production is going to change to ape these sounds just like the last decade owes a massive debt to Discovery.
Not so sure, maybe if there's some established acts that can go "we can do this if you give us the budget for it, I swear it!" and actually have the reputation for them to take a punt but otherwise can't see it making a massive impact. Record companies aren't going to spunk the amount of money that was clearly spent on this album on some unknowns.

I've been holding back on this because I fear I know what the response might be, but... How come a new Daft Punk album is such a big deal? I mean, they're just probably not my kinda thing, but I was vaguely aware of a few cheesey singles back in the day, and then they seemed to fizzle out and I just didn't think about them for a decade. And that One More Time one was them, yeah? Fucking dreadful. I don't remember ever seeing any threads about them on here in recent years, nor have I ever heard anyone I know talk about them. But now everyone is bumming them silly. And I'm just a bit surprised.
QUESTIONS: Have you been eagerly awaiting this, or is it just a 'oh yeah I used to like them when I was 15' thing?
What do you like about their music? (genuinely interested)

I like them, and I've always liked them, since I was about 15 when Homework came out. I like all their albums, even human after all and the tron soundtrack. their 2007 tour was fucking incredible, alive 2007 is arguably the greatest live album ever. I like synths and vocoders and samples and robots and prog/techno/disco and dancing and stuff. I like their name and how they've retained their sense of mystery. I was excited about the new album, and it has not disappointed me. It's great. proper pop.

I can see the attraction in how they present themselves, am a big fan of bands who think about their visual identity. The sense of mystery is good too, pretty rare these days. Robots I can dig, vocoders not so much. Just personal taste. Haven't listened to their new album or any others - am not doubting there's more to them than the singles, was just surprised by the reaction on here to the album leak. Didn't know they were that popular. I kinda get it a bit more now. Cheers for taking the time x
