No Thread for the TVOTR ATP?

lovelessrapture [Edit] [Delete] 49 replies 10:11, 13 May '13

I didn't go, just curious whether it was any good or not? Am debating whether to go to 1 of the winter fests.

All reports on Twitter seem to be very positive.

  • Yeah it was fun

No more than 50% full which made getting to see bands easy. We had a 4 person chalet for 2 of us - which is actually just the right size.

The bill felt really undercooked though. More than any other ATP I found lots of time to go to the beach, the cinema and Cambers pub and still see pretty much everything that was on. I guess it must be difficult for ATP when it's probably clear after the first month of ticket sales that they have another loss maker on their hands, but to charge £190 for that bill is taking the piss out of the people who have already bought tickets. They were a bit unlucky with DOOM pulling out which meant Tinariwen doing a 2 hour Sunday headline set. I like Tinariwen, but they are not a festival closer (I haven't seen as poorly attended Sunday headliner since Harmonia at the Pitchfork festival).

Security was great (again) - really laid back.

Thee Oh sees were immense last thing on Friday night.

Dark Dark Dark, The Juggs and Antibalas all very good.

And a word for the bloke who did Wuthering Heights at the karaoke - amazing stuff!

    prob500 | 13 May '13, 16:50 | X
    • wuthering heights dude was indeed excellent. as was the lady wearing the cape who did some whitney. everyone who headed off to see tv on the radio missed doseone doing i got you babe towards the end.

i really enjoyed the weekend and pretty much every set i saw was ace.

      ilovehoovering @prob500 | 13 May '13, 17:24 | X
    • Doom pulling out was probably a good thing for their finances, no?

Presumably they don't have to pay him now, but they also didn't have to refund anyone or book a replacement. Jamie_summers probably injected him with something on purpose.

  • it was a fun weekend

!!! were great (best dancing i've seen in a long time), as were tvotr. agree with the above though, it was noticeably quiet and there seemed to be a lot more downtime than usual. celebration were very good, the singer's voice is unbelievable. css were good too, the last song they played was hilarious.

the quiz was brilliant (as it always is!) and the guy who did wuthering heights at karaoke was amazing. loved the sonic basketball game in the arcade too and we had a great game of cricket on the grass. the beach was ridiculously windy and we ended up with sand everywhere.

pretty sad that it was probably my last atp, have had so much fun there over the years.

Apart from me, that is. I went. It was brilliant. I had FUN. And also halloumi. So, yeah.

      • Did they have those buddha bowls again?

        They're brilliant.

        • yes they did

  • I was one of the 300 people that attended this ...

And I loved every minute of it. My 13th ATP and genuinely one of the best. Agree that charging the same price for a very small line up is a little cheeky but I loved how quiet it was, how friendly everyone was and how interesting the bands were. Made some awesome discoveries and did lots of chat with new people. Most of whom managed to fit in the awesome party chalet.

    BrightEyes2 | 13 May '13, 23:52 | X
    • was that the one with the smoke machine and full lighting rig

that was banging out tunes on what sounded like a crappy CD player?

      berksy @BrightEyes2 | 23 May '13, 14:48 | X
  • Brilliant weekend

My 17th ATP, I think. Lots of upbeat, energetic bands. Loads of chalet parties. They had chairs and tables in the Queen Vic again. As others have said, it was very undersold - I heard that only 1/3 of the chalets were occupied and that certainly seemed to be the case wandering around - but since pretty much everyone there was friendly and up for a good time it didn't matter at all (and it also meant they didn't run out of beer, unlike last time).
The only minor downer was the Queen Vic closing at the ridiculously early hour of 2am (and the unnecessarily heavy-handed security forcing everyone immediately outside) but it wasn't really a problem due to all the aforementioned chalet parties.
    Roll on June.

  • Out of interest,

what is the capacity for these events at Camber?

    beepz | 14 May '13, 10:59 | X
    • think it's about 2500?

      Minehead was 5000

      lukowski @beepz | 14 May '13, 11:26 | X
      • so they probably sold about 1000 tickets?

bearing in mind the press/guests/bands milling around.

        ouch.

sounds like it was a good weekend though.

        Jordan_229_2 @lukowski | 14 May '13, 12:44 | X
  • what were the food and bar options like at camber?

its a been a while since ive been

    • Dont touch the food

and I hope you like Carlsberg

      Yesiamaduck @Matt_was_taken | 14 May '13, 14:54 | X
      • Honestly dont touch the food

ordered some fried chicken there, got 3 lumps of brown matter, it was the worst meal I've EVER had.

        Yesiamaduck @Yesiamaduck | 14 May '13, 14:55 | X
        • make sure I eat in the chalet then :/

          cheers

    • if you venture out, there's some nice seafood

there was a really good restaurant, but it's a bit hard to get a table.

the buddha bowl stand outside the Queen's head was pretty awesome though

      ardack @Matt_was_taken | 14 May '13, 17:41 | X
    • try and bring everything on site when you check in

i.e. drive. nothing on site is going to make you feel not awful

      • pizza was alright

        ohgood @ithica | 14 May '13, 18:26 | X
        • the actual pizza place?

cheese flavoured pizza is in the shop.

i remember having a burger and chips and it wasn't that bad but for deerhunter we are definitely having everything in by 1pm friday, going to co-op hungover on the saturday last time was the worst.

          ithica @ohgood | 14 May '13, 18:53 | X
    • food choice on offer was poor

but the Buddha bowls man. The fucking BUDDHA BOWLS! immense.

The people who run that have a stall at a monthly food festival not too far away from where I work. AWESOME

      berksy @Matt_was_taken | 23 May '13, 14:50 | X
  • took most food with me

but contemplated a veggie burger from the dodgy fast food place late on saturday night until i heard a bloke loudly say; "this is the place that gave me the shits last time". YUMMY! However, said bloke was in the queue behind me so it can't have been that bad. i had the chips from there last time and they were soggy and not particularly nice.

all my chalet mates loved the buddha bowls but the one i had gave me terrible indigestion. i am a food weakling though.

the drinks from the bar seemed pretty reasonably priced - carlsberg, carlsberg export and tetleys all on tap and there is a can bar at the back of the main stage bit with cans of stella, fosters, old speckled hen and john smiths for £2.50 a pop.

    myslumberingheart | 14 May '13, 19:41 | X
  • cheers guys

    Matt_was_taken | 14 May '13, 22:22 | X
  • theres a shop on site isnt there?

get some bread, butter and ready salted crisps. breakfast, lunch and dinner.

    Jordan_229_2 | 14 May '13, 22:33 | X
  • Anyone else amused/bemused that there's more jibber jabber about food options (and even the karaoke) than the actual bands who played?!

But to add to the food talk:

    - there is a chippy just if you take a left out of the main gate. It's not great, but is less of a health and safety disaster zone than the food on site (Bhudda bowls excepted).
    - and there is a pub on the walk to the the sands which fancies itself as a gasto pub. it's a bit overpriced for what you get, but it does do a pint of real ale.

Anyway, anyone see Death Grips? I was quite looking forward to it, but had to leave as it was a bit too much like being shouted at by a very angry man at a punishingly loud volume.

    prob500 | 15 May '13, 21:43 | X
  • i'd have given the dude who sang wuthering heights at karaoke

DOOM's slot, that was a missed opportunity, shame on you atp!

why has no one else commented on nic offer's boxer shorts and thrusting either?

death grips were amazing, i was completely hypnotised by it.

i thought the why? band were amazing but the nasal vocals became a bit much.

i am so disappointed in myself that i went to bed on friday and missed thee oh sees.

    myslumberingheart | 15 May '13, 22:22 | X
  • despite the lack of people

this was my most favourite ATP of all time. met so many brilliant people and had 1000% fun every day and nearly all night long. anyone go to the 121 chalet with the smoke machine/strobes/light rig? those were our next door neighbours so we never had to stray far!

sad i missed dose doing karaoke but glad i got to do it again (sang turn back time... again)

still trying to piece together my saturday night though... anybody know what i did?

    soup200 | 18 May '13, 12:01 | X
    • oh and highlights were

antibalas, saul williams, doseone, de la soul and tinariwen. fuck man. everything i saw was good actually, except maybe death grips and talibam!

      soup200 @soup200 | 18 May '13, 12:03 | X
    • Yep, I was in that chalet

(at least, I didn't notice the number, but there can't have been many with a full lighting rig). Shame they didn't invest as much in their soundsystem.

then I think the amp blew a couple of days before the festival.

(I didn't go to this one).

        • don't think so

because i know these guys and i don't think they know you?

hilarious comment about sound system. these people give their chalet over to you willingly! incredible how people always find something to complain about!

  • Anyone got a clue how well the Deerhunter weekend has sold?

I'm wondering whether it is likely to be any more (or less?) busy than the TVOTR one.

    hungover | 20 May '13, 12:46 | X
    • From what I have heard it's doing better than TVOTR but still gonna be much less busy than a usual ATP.

      benfyffemusic @hungover | 23 May '13, 16:29 | X
      • cheers ,yeah I suspected as much

there's a few more people I know going to this one, and the line-up is a little more 'mainstream', and it should be a bit sunnier in June, so on that entirely unscientific basis I am expecting it to be more popular

        hungover @benfyffemusic | 23 May '13, 18:26 | X
      • I might bag myself a last minute ticket then :)

        Yesiamaduck @benfyffemusic | 23 May '13, 19:23 | X

  • Holy Frickin Jeebus its been a week

Would anyone like to pass comment on how the Curators were please, Were TVOTR any good? New stuff ? Old Stuff? Stupid pointless Ghostbusters cover?

    bj72 | 20 May '13, 13:35 | X
    • proficient but dull imo

but they've never really been my bag (I've given their records a go numerous times but they've never made much of an impression) and I didn't last the whole set ... others were raving about them
highlights for me included Why?, Spank Rock, !!!, CSS, Antibalas, Dose One, Mykki Blanco, EL-P and probably countless others I've forgotten

      hungover @bj72 | 20 May '13, 14:28 | X
  • many thanks

!!! are always good value for money....id like a double headliner of !!! and the Rapture someday, 2 bands that are always great live

    bj72 | 20 May '13, 15:30 | X
  • fantastic

The Friday blast of Death Grips, De la Soul then Thee Oh Sees was easily the best opening night I've seen at an ATP. Spank Rock made me feel so filthy. !!! were loads of fun. TVOTR were reliably brilliant.

The beach was windy, the staff were great, the £2.50 cans of Old Speckled Hen a massive bargain at any festival. K Cider from the shop isn't that bad. The site is awful. The little girl that was with Tunde's crew was having a blast.
