I am rather enjoying this.
It's generally that I prefer rap with more soulful/funky backing and this definitely fulfills the former.
Though I've got to say I wish he'd cut down the "ah ah ah"ing, a little bit is fine but it's pretty much all the time, while the production and his rhyming is sharper than on 10 days the overuse of this undoes some of the good work. Definitely got potential for sure.
Smoke Again ft Ab Soul
yeah its definitely got a lot of pop-appeal. Doesn't stop Juice and Good as intro from being great.
not a skippable track here. Maybe ffwd the Childish Gambino verse but even the rest of that song is cool.
that "AH" noise he has to do about 50 times on every track. Like its cool and hes got a lot of energy but its mostly that and the production thats grabbing me at the moment, not so much the rapping.
but his voice is in that love it or hate it category.
TWO TIME, TWO TIME
As I'd hoped, it's a much more consistent release than Ten Day.
The guest spots are a bit hit and miss, but funnily enough it's pretty much the non-Chicago ones that I could do away with. Bronson, Childish Gambino and even Ab Soul I can probably do without, but BJ, Twista and Vic Mensa all add something.
Chance's voice does take some getting used to (and yeah, he needs to chill out with the nyeh-nyeh-nyehs) but his flow is super varied and there are some pretty clever lines buried in here too. Great release.
What a total fucking jam.
i guess as he mellows and matures a bit his vocal style will calm down, so i'm embracing it for the time being. he's got a really creative flow rhythmically
BETTER WATCH OUT FOR MY BROTHER
that line fucking slays, i heard good ass intro awhile back and it's still a highlight
I hope he makes more stuff like the intro with crazy footwork style drums. He sounds great over a track that sounds like it could fall apart at any second.
that song is still the/a highlight. It's kind of a mess in theory but it still totally sounds fluid.
that's a great album though actually. and so is Twista and The Speedknot Mobstaz 'Mobstability'. Bought that album and also Rhythmalism on the same day in 98 or whatever, both albums soundtracked my senior year of high school
everyone else has that annoying gap in Pusha Man? It's basically two songs but without a pause instead of a track break.
If not, I need a new copy of this.
Seems like it might be on purpose but not sure? I like both songs, the 2nd half would fit right in on good kidd maaaaad city.
I think I could get down with this post-Kendrick era of rap.
hmm yeah, it does seem like its on purpose - just don't really understand why it isn't just two songs. The second half is real nice though, you're right.
but I have one issue at the moment; does he call himself a 'faggot-slapper' at the start of Favourite Song?
He def says those words, interested to see his explanation as I'm sure he'll be asked about it at some point.
pretty cringe moment. Favourite Song into NaNa is the weakest section for me.
Spent more time with this this weekend and the flaws are coming out. Still enjoy on a whole tho.
'whoo-pah' that follows feels slightly comic, like he's self-aware of what he's saying and goofing around with it, dropping in a line that could be offensive as easily as it can be completely meaningless. Like he's aware that he should watch what he says but oh well woops it slipped out. I'd be really surprised if someone who name-drops Frank Ocean in a song (chain smoker) and imbues his work with LSD references is genuinely also a self-proclaimed 'faggot-slapper'.
you know like that multiple personalities/good and evil, almost self-referential without being pure po-mo or whatever
I dunno, it just seems like it's a weird thing to joke about - although I guess it didn't do OFWGKTA much harm.
it's one of my favorite Slum Village tracks. Everybody's Something samples it, just reminded me how good the SV song is.
Here is the og sample source too
played this so many times already
as is wayne, surprisingly
almost made me want to download dedication 5... but i just decided to play tha carter again instead.
but it's been on my phone a week and can't say I've given it a chance.
nana is the fucking bomb. love action bronson, but only in small measures. kid kills it.
some real catchy shit, for sure.
voice - not so good
Maybe Smoke Again too with AB Souls doo doo verse.
Acid Rain - Chain Smoker make up for both tho.
Premiering on Radio 1 at 7.30pm tonight. Interested to hear how that pans out!
not into it tbf
not on par with the rza collabo
Which is one of the best things Blake's ever done. Oh well, nice bit of exposure for Chance I guess.
With ummmm Skrillex.
