Does anyone know of any UK based equivalents of these? Cool idea
In both cases you have to *really* trust that your tastes match those of the guys running the club., but at least it seems to pick 'credible' people.
The second one is just useless. It's pressing stuff on vinyl for the 'coolness' of having a vinyl record. It's trying to buy instant credibility for bands that don't have any. It's for people (like those on DiS) who think that because an album is on vinyl it *must* be good.
Either way, I see no benefit to joining one these clubs over going to the record shop and just buying the music you want (on whatever format you want). If you like all the records the club releases in the year, that's cool, go and buy them. But if you don't, why would you throw money at music you don't like just because it's on vinyl instead of CD?
for years now. My sister re-subscribes for me every Christmas, easy for her and every month i get a nice wee gift. win win
http://www.fortunapop.com/release_details.php?cat_no=FPOPSC12 < £50 for 12 7"s is pretty good value
The Third Man one is alright, but kinda expensive and hit-and-miss on quality: http://thirdmanrecords.com/vault/faqs
and Odd Box as well
but I want to do vinyl and ale. Select releases from labels DiS likes, and some beers to try whilst listening to it.
Yeah, I got a copy of that hand-delivered by Matthew.
Weirdly I've been emailing back and forth with the http://www.signaturebrew.co.uk/ guys about doing something for a while.
I used to e-mail him a fair bit when I did more blogging, finally got a chance to say hi again when I saw Sparrow and The workshop a few weeks back.
It seems like the guy is killing it!
it was pretty good
but paying en masse like that, & the fact that most subscription series involve a few records I'm not bothered about, usually leads to me not bothering (about half of the Grapefruit stuff I'd love to have, the other half meh). Have succumbed a few times though; Happy Happy Birthday To Me 7" series, Kindercore 7" series, several of Three Lobed Records series, the one Digitalis did. Nothing recently (not helped by the fact that recent ones I've found interesting have been US-based, so the insane shipping makes the already large upfront payment even worse). Just discovered that an artist I am completist about is about to do one for a German series, & going by the previous entries I'm unlikely to have much interest in anything else, so that's pretty annoying.
It's really good - I've discovered some great artists, and $9.99 a month gets you 2 albums and a single (often more) which is amazing value even if you don't love it all.
