Well? Are there?
Here ya go Oissin - enjoyyyyyy (start with We Bake Our Bread... coz it's a masterpiece and Whateley is one of the best songs ever written)
ummm...well, Thumpermonksy are the best example of this that I can think of, digest 'em and I'll think of someone else. Knifeworld, Barringtone and the other Believers Roast/Cardiacs-affiliated crew are as fine a place to start as any, but the Monkey are at the vanguard.
Extra Life are a sort of twisted, straightfaced American take on all this.
Lapsus Linguae are fucking putting out the best album ever in a few months, showing literally everyone how it's done. So stoked.
I was looking for more spazzy/emo-ish stuff, but this is great.
Proper time signatures
albeit more pleasingly tuneful prog-pop than math-prog-metal madness
I speak of course of To Arms Etc, whose excellent work can be found here:
Perhaps start with the s/t album coz its opening track, The Black Pampas, is a fucking VDGG-esque *scorcher*, although the single is very great too.
The previous album, Corner Games, has a few great songs too (including the beautiful two-minute opener Berries, the insane prog instrumental Super-Radiance, the obvious Spoon homage (it's very, very obvious) and the melody-bursting-from-ears second track Isinbayeva), but you'll have to find that on Spotify
North Sea Radio Orchestra is one of the best bands in the world. oh boy they're special. so good I made a massive thread about them that nobody (ok, two of you) posted to
Here's their song Heavy Weather. It will slay you.
it wll haunt your dreams
after that you'd probably best find all their albums
But I reckon you'd probably like Tera Melos. They started off as better-than-average instrumental math-rock, now they're pretty vocal-led and are more like a pop-rock band that happens to be really complex. Hooky as hell with incredible musicianship and the odd noisy freakout, the last two albums are excellent stuff:
and, uh, wow!
They need more love on these boards
