but that's part of the fun right? It's more fun to get swept up in it that not.
THE PLURAL OF VINYL IS VINYL YOU MASSIVE TWAT.
I'm sure someone already has
pitchfork are saying its legit. http://m.pitchfork.com/news/50420-boards-of-canada-released-a-mysterious-12-on-record-store-day/
the store have verified it was released
warp account in twitter started following the store it was placed in.
Someone's chopped the intro to Everything You Do Is A Balloon...!!!
but not quite/ it's the same opening chord on the same synth program but the rest is quite different.
When something appears on the Warp sites, I will believe.
but you should hop aboard the hype train. It's fun.
New release and it's gonna be as good as Geogaddi. It's got that brilliant old school feel and will probably be a double album....
And they are going to do some live dates and appearing on the Jonathan Ross Show.
Fuck me I'm excited.
wtf! That's going to be like a penguin in the Sahara.
and then afterwards they'll sit down and chat for a bit with Graham, Judi Dench, Will. I. Am, and Miranda Hart
and no, it's their labelmates Boards of Canada
HAR DE HAR HAR
They're one of those bands that I only listen to on-and-off these days, despite them being a huge influence on my own work and on my tastes in music in general (they got me really interested in degraded lo-fi sounds, so got me into Grouper and cLOUDDEAD and stuff, and further into stuff like the Microphones and Mt. Eerie; as well as into music that crosses the boundaries between electronic / pastoral -- so loadsa stuff, ya know, etc. etc.).
But I listened to ...Beautiful Place... and Twoism today. I think I'm due to binge on the Bock.
so yeah - its happening
And has said something will happen "soon"
I'm not going to spoil it..
The video is an account that's linked to the BOC youtube (via another account!) and so appears to be legit.
With the numbers for position 3 (it flashes quickly at the end)
THIS IS GETTING EXCITING.
I have very few non-ridiculous theories left. You think you've solved it?
...and I can't go a day without playing Slow This Bird Down.
at Rough Trade East. Amazing that it's been there since RSD and no one found it up to this point. Looks like it may be another copy of the one found in NYC.
knew one would be in Rough Trade. KNEW I should have gone there yesterday.
I actually bumped into a mate from Warp at Rough Trade East on RSD (could he have delivered it?) and was gonna ask him about new Boards but forgot. Double doh.
*plasticniki gives justanothersheeldz a stern look*
plasticniki: He's not worth it.
you can put your children in the creche, where they will be recorded for use in a new track; and eat in a cafeteria where all the food is cooked with heavily modded old modular synthesizers.
The latest set of numbers was played on Zane Lowe about an hour ago:
Anyone hear it?!
What a load of arse...
if so i'm guessing its gonna be shite.
better result in new material.
Such a strange coincidence - i turned on Zane Lowe at the very moment the last few digits were being read out. Never listen to him normally amd this was such a apur of the moment trip to Tesco. It didn't wven click because afterwards he played the new Jon Hopkins and it blew me away haah
...the saddo I am?
at WATMM. I have read through every page (of which at least 40) of that sardonic circle-jerk. What a waste of my life.
but in general WATMM is an alright forum, once you get past the 'read the rules' cliquey bullcrap.
Didn't see anything of note. Paid special attention to the ad section. Couldnt be bothered to look through the gig listings though.
I haven't looked at an NME since Peel died. :-(
i probably won't bother picking one up. I've not read it for years either.
I can't stand the rag.
and joined purely because they get tend to get news first (because of weird insiders like MDG (which makes it quite a fun forum at times) and because some of those guys can get so much surprisingly credible analysis from tiny details); but now that there's actually loads of stuff going on, it's hard to keep up with everything.
Needless to say, this is all quite fun and cool. There's something I like about the whole just sending weird codes out to radio stations (who aren't in on it either) that's so much more exciting than the more commonplace overly contrived attempts to 'go viral' or just nonchalantly putting something out.
I guess this is sort of in between, just sort of being nonchalantly mysterious. Just like 'whatever, here's a vinyl with a code on it. Seeya later'
Will there be an MBV-style 'overnight' release that is only accessible using the code?
but this is all awfully exciting isn't it?
they are putting music out in June (as a lot believe) and instead of a 'yo! shit's gonna drop in 2 months bros' announcement they're having a bit of fun and feeding the fans/ trolls for the interim. A mysterious group doing mysterious shit. Crazy eh?
No one can doubt music is coming imminently.
it's a bit of fun.
but last night I was trying to explain to my girlfriend why folk on Reddit were getting so excited about it. I played her Dayvan Cowboy and she stared blankly into space for about three minutes. Naturally I assumed she was nonplussed, but when she `came to' she told me she felt like she'd been in a trance. Odd reaction, but pretty funny.
Friday 21st June release date. It's the summer solstice. Seems like a BoC thing to do.
I'm hoping for New Album, Old Tunes Boxset and Live dates. 'LOL'
...I have started to become very excited. Yes I know I claimed hoax 3 days ago but it's actually going to happen. I was convinced the TCH was the last ever release. NEW BOC!!!
Let's keep this thread on the front page e till the big day....
first of all the youtube playlist changed to have three videos of Twoism at the top. then a forum member on Twoism.org noticed that the banner image at the top of the forum had slightly changed. he then opened the GIF in Notepad and saw two links to two private Soundcloud Boards of Canada uploads:
with an image of the summing unit in electronics... which when the two soundclouds are played over each other they cancel each other out giving the fifth clue (!!!)
so yeah, now there's five numbers. four in the correct space in the string, with the NPR one still to be discovered.
also, looking into the files downloaded from soundcloud, some text was found: http://puu.sh/2H9xT.png that suggests that the album might be called "Cosecha".
All credit goes to the Twoism forum. :D
This is ace.
Not sure which language but probably Spanish or Portuguese. So a few are thinking its means a autumn/ fall release. I'm hoping it's a little more abstract and refers to harvesting/ reaping their unreleased stuff i.e. the boxset that's been rumoured for eons.
that BoC would use a banner on the Twoism site, which is a completely unofficial BoC site.
And then a forum member on the same site "noticed" the banner had slightly changed and ended up on Soundcloud, with material they claim is from BoC. Hmmm
and the only reason that people started to suspect the forum was when the official youtube playlist put three twoism videos at the top of the list.
it's not a hoax. plus, the final audio snippet, clue 5, is identical to the others, something no fake has managed.
usually when there's a (convincing enough) fake, a user called mdg (confirmed to be a friend of the band / the Hexagon Sun collective) tends to debunk it; also worth noting is that he's not posted with regards to these new codes.
I'm properly buzzing for this now!
and possibly for a fair few weeks to come too.
In particular the tweet `20:35 | #BoC | ?'.
according to Twoism (or preparing to, the picture just shows the XXXXXX/---... image)
for anything ever. I don't even care what the album sounds like at this point, I just want it.
it's doing right what so many overly-contrived attempts to 'go viral' have done so very very wrong. Nice to see an eagerly awaited album not just chucked out without warning.
MBV, Bowie, Daft Punk, BoC. Makes a change from the standard title and release date in 3 months time...
....How long will this go on for....?
He says the sun came out last night.
He says it sang to him.
As to what it means who knows?
But it's so damn exciting!!
it was never about the numbers or backmasked messages for me.
I can understand in theory that this might be exciting if you display those borderline autistic tendencies that are associated with this kind of puzzling, but what if the music isn't up to much?
I hope it is, obviously.
and not "display those borderline autistic tendencies that are associated with this kind of puzzling" to be honest.
Their whole aesthetic is built upon this kind of thing. I personally cant imagine being a fan of their music without having an interest in old public service broadcasts, numbers stations and all that kind of shit.
If that's true then you must be boxed in mentally.
They make pretty sounds. People enjoy them.
and their melodies wavered out of equal temperament is infinitely more profound than any maths or hidden messages.
that stuff only affects me in the way a Russian numbers station sounds so haunted, disembodied and cryptic and subject to the
I was going to say something poetic about static and long-wave radio and 'rarified atmosphere', but never mind
Not everyone needs a technical manual to appreciate popular music, and there are various levels of depth in which music can be appreciated and experienced.
The fact you can't even imagine another person enjoying BoC on a purely aural level suggests your mentality is just as limited as those at Reading who you deride.
will remember all previous albums being released with little to no fan fare/press hype
don't get it twisted.
there was a pretty video and a really quiet loop of a code inside. We tried desperately to hear it for ages but it turned out to be the same one that was broadcast on NPR. Anti-climax. Was hoping for Marcus or Mike to appear and kiss me.
Summary here: en-in-messageboard-banner-might-include-title-of-new-record/
code is now 699742/628315/717228/936557/- - - - - - /519225
Cannot believe I've missed this! I need to start getting on the internet more, only stumbled across this whole thing earlier today.
Too excited. I'm going on a BoC marathon as of right now.
just played some numbers on 6 Music.
It was BoC numbers. On a short track.
...which suggests that if the numbers stand for the letters of the title the first and fifth letters would be identical.
Apparently some header on the Twoism board contains "csch", so I'd put low-denomination money on "Cosech" as the title.
they just announce that their albums are half price on iTunes.
Prepare for the end... the end of high prices!
now redirects to:
the source code:
(so excited I can't type properly)
Out on June 10th 2013.
Which is my 30th Birthday. GET IN!!
How thoughtful of them!
Reckon this album is going to be dark!
Was hoping all of this hype would culminate in an album stream, or even a free download. Alas...
They're cashing in on the vinyl and t-shirts straight away.
the web link that asks for a password will be activated by typing in the final code from all the clues when finally put together?
When you enter a code it comes up with "Sorry, that code is invalid.
Codes are 8 characters, plus a dash (e.g., "y0v4-h3rj").
Please double-check your code and try again."
So the numbers seemingly have nothing to do with that web link.
Warp say it should be back up https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=10151481761253145&id=19343183144
nah it's back up now
gone again for me now though
would check it again if i were you. back!
Pre-ordered it on CD, vinyl and t-shirt.
Pleasantly surprised by the CD being £8.99, thought it might be some stupid RSD-type price. Still probably more keen to pre-order Dessa's new album, but since the tax allowance thing has effectively meant I've had a payrise this month maybe I'll just get both.
to get at the transmission with the sample and release date. That led via a link to Bleep to preorder. Someone must have ripped the quicktime file and made it public.
Goose pimples watching that video....
So so happy...
The transmission video was very dark. Proper ball-tingling stuff in the second half though.
More excited than I ever expected tbh.
NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL HAVE REFORMED
no one noticed this
although I would have liked to have paid a bit more for 180g vinyl.
I had to go onto Bleep this morning just to check it was still real.
They've got a new album coming out? That's nice.
They continue making cryptic announcements and stuff until June 10th, possibly links to more videos/clips, y'know just to keep it going.
First single to be played on Radio 1 this coming Monday (20/05).
Vic Galloway's show.
I'm not sure they're really a band where I'd want to just listen to one out-of-context single.
It'll be hard to avoid...
For me anyway.
That never happened.
maybe they pulled it after he mentioned it? Or maybe it just was never confirmed.
Either way, I can wait another few more days.
May 22nd 24:00 @ 1-23-10 Jinnan Shibuya-ku Tokyo
probably first screening of a video?
We'll see. Whatever they do I'm sure it will make me squeal like a girl... Just realised that the album is due out in less than three weeks. Can hardly believe it.
BOC's site is down, hopefully they'll upload the video.
Probably the same track as was played in Japan.
We need these little treats to get by.
they've completely lost - not made a good record since 2006
This is exciting. Anyone listening now??
Goosebumps. Proper fucking goosebumps.
I cried a little bit in the middle of that.
Is that I want to listen to that loud and bassy rather than on my phone over streamed radio.
It was incredible.
Actually emotional right now.
so fucking frustrating
"Your call is important to us. A representative will be with you as soon as possible."
video looks great too
Deep and cinematic. Beautiful.
Really looking forward to the album now if that`s the general sound/vibe of it.
I'll definitely appreciate it more within the context of the album, though. With Boards, I find I need to set aside the time to soak in a whole album / EP to get full enjoyment.
Loud on good headphones.
and then lock it up until the album drops in two weeks. But, initial impressions? Absolutely incredible.
2 and a bit bastard weeks is far too long for an impatient sod like me.
that June is really soon and stuff
So, two very positive reviews so far, off the back of a single listen.
Even more excited now!
the synth and the beat that come in late in the track are a bit generic, though.
The Twoism board is full of Americans packing their pickup trucks to journey there. Hope its worth it. Maybe a preview of another track.
I'm not listening to it though.
That location has a drive in movie theatre according to some, so that might be a cool location for a new video.
Seeing the hexagons made me almost as excited as hearing the music.
seems to fit with the Quietus' description of that track, as well
The people there are only allowed to record the first three tracks apparently.
This fella has set up a live stream...
But it keeps going down.
But the stream is live and it's starting.
Gemini - Fanfare then Sunn type bass rumble echo thing moving into arpeggios merging into...
Reach for the Dead - which we know
White Cylosa - Sounded like something pre Boc Maxima. Old school sounds..Like a John Carpenter soundtrack (as someone else has said)
Jacquard Causeway - sounds unlike any BoC I've heard. Discordant layering of themes that build...The stream cut off mid way through track 4.
But then I haven't heard much from before Boc Maxima. Enjoyed it a LOT
is getting laid tonight
Hyped for the Giorgio Moroder track
Now Cold Earth
First 4 were seriously dark shit.
Because FUCK ME it is good.
Tunes are a bit short though.
Guess my first listen'll be when I own it. Never really go for these streamings anyway.
some quality stuff. amazing level of detail and going to take loads of listens to unpick.
but it was always going to be, wasn't it?
just disappointed it's going to finish soon...
Love the flow and journey of it, and it`s not as dark as I was expecting.
Pretty much all of the tunes could've done with being a bit longer though. Still excellent though.
Don't think I've ever been that blown away by an album.
Bleep, send me my music...
10/10. Really wasn't expecting this much brilliance after 7 years.
Which tracks stood out for you? Reach For The Dead, Jacquard Causeway, Palace Posy and New Seeds for me.
could you please pm me a link if possible?
Got off reddit. It's fine but not the greatest clarity.
judging by the 320 encoding I'm going to say it's a rip of a Japanese pre-order, although there's another version on soulseek which is clearly the webrip
reach for the dead, cold earth, palace posy and nothing is real are my favourites right now
But knowing it took 8 years, does anyone else feel like there are 2 separate periods of work contained in the album. One the one side the fairly oppressive John Carpenter-esque soundtracks pieces and on the other side a more jaunty yet classic BoC sound? 'Collapse' into 'Palace Posy' is the most striking example of the disparity. There have been suggestions on forums they have recycled some of their casette tracks.
and i love them for it.
though I thought it took until track 6 to really get going.
better wait until the p4k review though to make sure they agree amirite!!!11
And my first listen to the album. As many have suggested, it sounds like a mix between the intricacy off Geogaddi and the strange surreal vibes of MHTRTC. The packaging is luxurious too.
