Do in stores mean you pick a store or avoid it? Anyone got any sneaky tips? Timing suggestions? Hopes? Fears?
Rough Trade East will be full of pricks (as it is every day of the year). So will Kristina, but it's closer to my flat. It's also tiny and the Horrors are doing a DJ set, so it could get pretty busy.
I reckon we can get it up to 5 by the end of the day
There was one yesterday too.
it's a sub-question to those threads.
It's the shop I visit every weekend anyway. It's got so busy there that they haven't done instores for the last few years. About four years ago Emiliana Torrini played a free gig for the first people in the queue. That was awesome.
Last year, a guy a few people in front of me bought every single thing on the list. I thought that was a bit shit - not in the spirit of things. Most other people were just going to buy music they loved. I've got an open mind, but I don't honestly believe that anyone could love everything on the list.
I'm going to go early again this year. I got there around 4am last year, and since then Rounder Records has closed, so I reckon it'll be even busier. So early alarm clock, then cycle down, join the queue and hopefully get a few hours kip until they open at 8.
4 am?! Bloody hell.
I'll be honest- I'm dreading it. I don't want to go at all really, but DO want a couple of singles. I don't want to queue for more than an hour though....
if you're allwaystired
ha! Seriously though- is 4am necessary? I've been only once a few years ago, got there about an hour early and there were about 10 of us. Have things changed?
I'd rather get out of bed at silly o clock, join the queue earlier and have a bit of a snooze till things start moving, and have a better chance of getting what I want.
And it makes it feel like more of an event getting up in the night to go, like when you used to go on a day trip to france when you were a kid.
at about 4pm. I don't really care either way if i get the records which i desire (Walkmen, Gza, KMS) - it'll just be nice to hang out it the shops I usually go to...but, y'know, with other customers around.
queued for a few hours last year, this year plan on going around midday as there are no "must haves" on the list - there are a few records I want, but not a huge issue if I can't get any of them
and then be annoyed when I still have to queue and nothing I want is left.
4th year in a row. A joint trip to see and stay with my nan who lives in Wales and attending Record Store Day. I'm going to be doing a DJ set in the shop again, which is lots of fun.
so I'll pop to Resident early-ish (9 probably) and hope they have it which they won't.
I can be certain of that.
Precisely because there's a bunch of stuff I want and Id rather pay the standard RSD inflated price rather than the eBay arsehole inflated price. I imagine I'll be home and back in bed by the time the bands start up though.
Then nip down to Reflex later for another browse/catch the in-stores.
It's my favoured local-ish indie; I make 40mile round trips every other weekend to thumb through the racks so it seems churlish to go anywhere else.
Went to Rise in Swindon last year which was well-stocked and very civil but it's vanished now. The two years previous to that I went to Sound Knowledge in Marlborough but it became evident that the owner was letting most of the locals reserve all the best stock ahead of time. They're a small shop and it ensured that they'd only order in what they'd sell but it was still pretty shit.
for at least the last 2 years and for a small shop they get a lot of stock in. I'll be going there on Saturday, but won't be queuing at opening time. I'd rather have a nice brouse of what's left a bit later in the day.
I'll be sticking to my 40 minutes round walk via weekly shop at Tesco!
Doubt I'll go in particularly early, my experience last year was that I sauntered in at 10 and still picked up some stuff I wanted (Feistodon and Human Don't Be Angry IIRC).
They're hosting a Gold Panda/Luke Abbott instore. As it stands, I might head down to Soundclash (Norwich)
Rough Trade West, like I usually do.
nout much I want, just like looking around and seeing everyone do their utter nut over everything. Might get the Aidan Moffat 7" if they have it.
But was considering heading down to Berwick street late morning/early afternoon to take in a few bands and generally browse. Is this likely to be a pleasant experience, or is it going to be hellishly busy with zero chance of actually getting to see any of the bands?
2011's experience at rough trade east put me off massively, i got there early as i physically could without camping outside and the queue was already about 50 deep. everyone in the crowd was really hostile to one another and i wasn't able to get half the things i wanted because 90% of the people in front of me had picked up literally as much as they could (presumably to stick on ebay). because of this i didn't even bother doing record store day 2012.
i'm going to go to my (much) smaller local record store this year about half an hour before it opens, is there even any point? will anything semi-desirable even still be in stock?
might turn up around 9 or 10. It's really small though so I hope there's not a huge queue.
Just gonna rock up a few hours after I wake up and see what's about. They've got bands playing all day (Fence records showcase in the morning), so will likely stay there all day.
As i need to bus it up and want to know whether it would be worth turning up at 1
Staying at a mates in Romford then we are heading up on the first train at 5am.
Slightly worried about the path my life is heading when the release I'm most excited about is a Marillion 12"
But just found out it closed :( Proper gutted, that place was a dream for RSD last year. Not really sure where to go now - closest places are all Notting Hill based so might head on down there and just avoid Rough Trade West like the plague. Hopefully somewhere will have Mercury Rev and I'll be sorted.
I know the queues get busier and longer every year, but christ.
5 of us here now!
