I say 'songs', I'm not sure I would be able to tell you much about them and they only just stopped playing.
Don't get the fuss about this guy at all.
This is turning to be a beast of a year for new music
isn't he meant to be on XL?
Older one for me. New one sounds like a sleepier version of the first one.
either way its a pretty perfect song! i like to be able to hear his voice a bit clearer on this one tho
on third listen. its just good to hear him do more stuff within that sound.
the cover of crush by jennifer paige (track 7) is great.
cant remember what it was called but there was a demo that leaked back around december that was more like the sample-based tracks on this but really mad. its not on here but its worth a listen to see where he's coming from.
kinda glad he didnt re-record btstu
sounds pretty good. Tough Alliance vibes on some of the tracks a bit.
Dancehall stuff, recently had a hit shouting over a Saturdays song.
BTSTU is one of the best things I've heard in the last few years, so really excited for this. From track 2 alone it seems like it might just live up to expectations
Track 1 - ?
Track 2 - Str8 Outta Mumbai
Track 3 - ?
Track 4 - ?
Track 5 - Genevieve
Track 6 - ?
Track 7 - Crush
Track 8 - ?
Track 9 - Jasmine
Track 10 - 100,000
Track 11 - ?
Track 12 - Baby Beats
Track 13 - ?
Track 14 - Chix
Track 15 - ?
Track 16 - BTSTU
it sounds so so cool
physical release any time soon?
On the download I go.
but doesn't seem to be the album 'proper' - maybe the album in demo form ? Maybe he didn't like the XL mixes and thought 'fuck it' ?
it's good though either way
of course it's him
The two singles were pretty great, I enjoyed them. But (and I know it's a cliche), I don't get the hype. If everyone has only heard two singles, and then some demos.. what's the big deal? I don't get why those two songs have created such a massive impact- this isn't me complaining about the hype, I just feel like I've genuinely missed something. Loads of artists release a couple of great songs at the start of their careers, but I didn't think that people normally, or EVER went this mental for them? Are there loads of industry rumours about how amazing the stuff he's working on is, or something like that? Or is he previously known, as part of a band or something?
Also, why has he had such huge gaps between releases? People talk about it as if it's some sort of big masterplan, but to me that would suggest he was having troubles with releasing/writing/perfecting/label issues etc. If you had THIS much hype, it's surely a bit foolhardy to wait literally years to capitalise on it? But I know practically nothing about the guy, as I say maybe there's lots of things I don't know about his music and career that would go some way to explaining all this.
And this bandcamp album is quite nice. If it's the album proper then it's disappointing, if it's a collection of bits and pieces then it's very promising.
creates mystery and everything, just like people not knowing who Burial really was did. Burial could probably have got more success in a direct way if he'd just named the project after himself, but instead he built a longer lasting fanbase because of all the intrigue.
but at least someone like Burial had released a couple of albums before his identity became widely known (i think?), so there was more to base the hype on than a couple of tracks released years apart.
people just liked the songs a lot
he's released more songs, so people are excited about that
some people saying "these two singles are the best songs released this decade!" and then other people agreeing with them, when they're really no better or worse than loads of indie R&B stuff. I really like them, but of all the songs i've heard in the past two years, I would never in a million years have guessed it was those ones which would get people the most excited!
but that's how these things work i guess. I suppose i'm just trying to work out why these songs are SO popular, both in a DiS conext and on Radio 1 etc. It's not as if they're groundbreaking or hyper catchy or sum up the mood of the times or anything.
could easily see how it could be taken as a gateway song into loads of alternative stuff
I'm really glad that Radio 1 is playing his stuff!
released a thing earlier saying that it's an illegal leak and that he'd do a full statement later:
If that's the case then I want my fucking money back!
jasmine has sounded much better in the radio play I've heard previously
1. If this is true, then it's a bit off.
2. I think it's more likely to be a clearout of stuff that wasn't planned to be on the album, otherwise XL would have shut down the link pretty sharpish.
3. He has a picture of Vicky Pendleton as his twitter backdrop, which is sweet.
it's an endearingly naff attempt
Unless there's still some cache in being seen to be fighting against your label these days, and I thought that Death Grips proved that there isn't.
he probably just found out what happened the same way everyone else did.
So now he's trying to totally disassociate himself from it. Smart move, Jai.
and has surely made quite a lot of money from this?? Who is 'Sloan Ranger' and has he basically now ripped off thousands of people??
Not sure if there's a connection...
In this age of 24 hour Twitternewsfuckery there's no way you'd wait an entire day to release a statement saying it was stolen.
I reckon he probably got pissed off with his label and leaked it himself. How many people who leak LPs actually set up a payment system for the album? They do it for the kudos, not the cash.
sum up why this whole thing smells a bit fishy (is that still a phrase that people use?): http://www.crackintheroad.com/music/21107-feature-finding-jai-paul/
...and the person clearly was a huge music fan, so much so that he knew to upload it and behave in the exact way the Jai Paul 'would' is total bullshit i reckon.
If the person knew him that well, im sure he could have just asked them for his laptop back!
Most dickhead thieves steal laptops, erase them and sell them to cash converters! Not set up elaborate and downright traceable scams like this!
''and the person clearly was a huge music fan, so much so that he knew to upload it and behave in the exact way the Jai Paul 'would'''
what does this even mean?
I guess what im saying is that anyone who knew anything about/the mysterious ways of Jai Paul up until this release wouldn't have expected an album by him to have appeared online in any other way i.e. shrouded with mystery. So therefore, if this thief was that smart it is a rather individual case.
Also, the fact it took over 24hrs for XL to take down the recordings.
if somebody really did come into possession of this how else would they sell it? are they gonna pretend to be jai on the phone to XL and get a release date setup just so it looks more official?
you don't even know if the circumstances do revolve around a laptop and you don't know what the situation was between XL/the real jai behind the scenes.
are you Jai's boyfriend?
Well if it wasn't official, i'm just saying that it was wide knowledge it was online yesterday, and XL didn't exactly get in there straight away to have it pulled, and it took 24 hours for any kind of "this isn't the album" statement to surface online.
Maybe i'm wrong but it's all very fishy. you have to admit that.
but that can mean anything at this point
Someone else did, on Twitter, without saying that he'd said it. They were speculating.
...if you open a dispute on Paypal you will be refunded. They just processed my case in under an hour, so they're obviously expecting it.
I reckon this little stunt was aimed directly at XL
he probably got himself a sweet re-negotiation off the back of it and probably some cash in his pocket - not sure why anyone would claim their money back, the tracks were all there to listen to before you buy...
I doubt very much that it was a PR stunt in the normal sense
I think it's either that, or he and XL got together and decided that it had been so long since his last recording appeared online that perhaps they should just do something wacky to get everyone excited again.
You are the reason that I breathe Jai Paul You are the reason that I still believe Jai Paul You are my destiny JAI PAUL
I put in a dispute through PayPal as someone suggested above but haven't heard anything yet...
So I decided to check it out but can't find it. I'm guessing it's no longer available? Or maybe I'm not looking hard enough. Suppose I'll have to wait for an official release. But damn his stuff sounds good.
release this album. I am desperate.
i just sent you a pm. was never released legally anyways.
Still going to buy it properly if it comes out
When he finally drops something, I'll be copping dat vinyl.
