Album out this summer?
me discovering Run The Jewels (fan number: 000000001)
El's had that as his Twitter/Soundcloud picture for ages.
This song is heavy and nice. Can't wait for the record.
Reminds me of Company Flow more than anything. Which is a good thing.
Cancer for Cure was getting absolutely rinsed around that time last year, reminds me of finishing my dissertation now and then cotching for a month in le' sun.
They're touring it stateside as well, God I hope they bring it over here.
This is so good, they're such a fucking solid duo. I bet they will come over here, both have been over recently to a good reception.
Release date / tracklist / artwork:
I think I might pre-order the record - it looks really nice with the gold vinyl and all the instrumentals too.
I *really* need a new herb grinder.
Can't wait for this record.
No luck :(
it probably won't be available until 1/2pm today at the earliest
First track delivers big time
is one of the default sounds on the Computer Kit on the Native Maschine. Really distracting me from the rest of the track.
Apart from that, sounds great so far.
that there's a lot of the ideas here which sound very similar to some of those on Cancer 4 Cure & R.A.P. Music. To the extent that some of these songs almost sound like "sister" songs to ones on those albums.
on first listen, it sounds a bit like a finishing off job on those two records.
Luckily I love those two records and it's succinct enough to not feel played out. The last song is really brilliant.
Guess they're stretching the sound a little, but I love a good victory lap. Can't wait for the tour.
The US shows are solo sets from the pair of them and a Run The Jewels set as well. Can't wait for dates to be announced here.
Was half expecting it to be a bit throwaway in a fun way from the "singles" but there's a lot of tracks which are a lot denser and feel a lot like growers from the first listen.
The title track goes fucking hard though, it's the tits. Loving Sea Legs as well.
dudes, stop leaving unfinished business. You'd have thought they would have learned their lesson.
The Big Boi x El-P connection needs to be explored further
I'm so motherfucking grimy, so motherfucking greedy, gritty / Momma said I couldn't breast feed because I was biting at her titty
Word for word. He sounds so fucking hyped up
Really not bothered about it sounding too similar to the last two records as that's exactly what was to be expected, plus it's FREE and it took them like 9 months to make, really can't argue with an incredibly *solid* record off the back of something they decided to do for the pure pleasure of it.
They're billing it as an album rather than a mixtape, so maybe it sounds a little undercooked in that respect, but, y'know, it's free. And it's great.
Beats are awesome throughout, and both guys sound even more amped than on their albums from last year.
Get It is probably still my favourite, but loving the title track and Twin Hype Back
The title track is my highlight followed by Get It, Sea Legs and Job Well Done
fucking hell it's special.
I'm really enjoying this.
Such a banger.
I sent they mom a little cash and a sympathy letter / Told her she raised a bunch of fuck boys / Next time do better / BITCH!
the two have a killer chemestary, badman flow and wicked personality. They crack me up and just work. But the music aint even close. I wanna hear them on the Joe Rogan podcast not on record. The beats aint bad as such but they don't match the vocals at all. The beats kinda have a try hard old guys making young people shit vibe to them that rubs the wrong way. I think its the arangments of the beats thats just some how doing too much all the time one way or another, it just doesn't sit well and makes the rest of it sound not quite right to me at least.
I've got a load on wax from years back. I'm a fan of his from way back, but he just aint the same any more hasn't been for years. And I aint nostalgic like that if someone falls off they fall off.
Hope they bring Despot too
(would also like a Despot album too)
Panicked there. Anyway, FUCK YES.
Same night as Dismemberment Plan :(
I got all excited as I misread it thinking it said Electric Ballroom - ie. they were supportin' the Plan..
Bit steep (£16.50 plus like fifty quid in SeeTickets fees...) but fuck it.
But really, you're getting 2 for the price of 1, plus I imagine it'll be incredible.
Clashes with The Dismemberment Plan
DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND
and joyous and fun and idk just want to hug everyone
Met Mike after his show here earlier this year and he's easily the most engaging and downright lovely artist I've met. Got the sense that his appreciation and love for people coming out to see him was 100% genuine and it was great to see.
Seems pretty close by... could do with saving a few quid if they are
but I'm getting a ticket anyway, just in case
might try to flog it if they do end up playing ATP 1 (depending on how great they are, and how knackered I end up)
SAID IT'S THE BEAT OF THE YEAR
I SAID EL-P DIDN'T MAKE IT
SO GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE
click "get it now" and put yr email address in
I cannot express how gutted I am that this clashes with the Dismemberment Plan. Might be the hardest gig-going decision I've ever had to make!
By my overexcitement at seeing the Dismemberment Plan. Probably for the best as my umming and aaaring would have meant that I missed out on both...
Might actually be able to pick up the vinyl now! Can't actually find any more news on this but this page does exist:
Looking forward to picking up the vinyl. Been listening to it LOADS this week and is fast becoming my record of the year.
Wouldn't have paid a fucking fortune in shipping and customs charges for the vinyl if I'd known a UK label was gonna put it out.
or are there more dates to be announced?
Basically yeah it's a one-off, that's El saying they'll be doing a proper European tour at the beginning of 2014.
And that they'd be sending replacements? Well, WHERE ARE MY REPLACEMENTS?
Anyone for a drink in the Craft Beer Co beforehand?
Not sure if I have - if everyone else has, I'll go rummaging through the post.
firstname.lastname@example.org who've sorted it for me (just gonna leave replacement tickets at box office)
Got one left at the box office. Ticketweb are bloody useless.
as support...seemingly not. it will be extremely ace i'm sure anyway.
i saw them in toronto with kool ad, despot as well as solo sets as well. it was brilliant, if a really long (4.5 hour!) gig
I was hoping Despot would support here too, maybe the full tour will be more like the US dates
Young Fathers were fucking brilliant too, much better than when they supported Why? last year and I liked that too.
was the comic timing of El-P saying "could you not have made that a bit more dramatic?" following KM's brilliantly overblown Raegan in the middle of the crowd.
Great show. The system was REALLY loud.
That was great, he's a funny man. Enjoyed his responses to people yelling out specific things to him all night as well.
Love the dynamic the two of them have.
thought my house alarm was going off - and I was wearing earplugs as well.
They just dropped an exclusive new track on the build up. Being interviewed now
Was it good?
and the new track is gonna be on that, along with a couple of remixes including one Dave Sitek (iirc from the interview).
Sounded good, very much in line with the rest of the album. Don't worry about missing a big new single or anything though.
Given I ended up spending about £35 in delivery and customs charges for the US vinyl
God I love these guys
To notice he re-used a sample from End to End Burners for the hook of 'Get It'?
For he bonus tracks?
Pew Pew is okay but I *love* the BSBD remixes. They're like a chillwave version :')
but that ceremic cartridge prob won't do your records much good in the long run.
Don't shout at me plz, the record looks bootiful, must get this!
(can you point me in the direction of anything?)
best 'budget, proper, entry level' turntable you'll find for that price, if you're willing to spend a tad more then any of the other Pro-ject or Rega decks will be an astronomical improvement on that Bush jobby.
Don't bother with any of those sub 100 quid plastic auto decks that are all over Amazon either, they're all made in the same style, same factory then slapped with a different make. All a bit shit, had one for a couple of years myself. That Project Elemental is good as it's all calibrated before you pull it out the box and you can always upgrade the stylus down the line.
guess the proper uk tour isn't though :'(
Run the Jewels, Captain Murphy, Sleep, Deafheaven, KA, Modorer.
the 2011 was where Drones over Brklyn first appeared
Was just wondering the other day about RTJ2. Cannot wait.
Already sounds sick. Gonna be a long time before I get bored of hearing Mike over this kind of stuff.
Can these guys do any wrong? :D
Going to see them in a couple of weeks time whilst I'm over in Vancouver, hoping for a lot of new material!
still got high hopes for the album though
maybe there'll be a full UK tour this time round
Manchester Gorilla - Dec 11th
Koko - Dec 12th
But I really like Koko?
One of the few venues where I'm guaranteed to be able to see if I get there early enough, sound is always fine from the balcony behind the sound desk and the view from there is great as well.
The only places in the entire venue where you can actually see the stage are the front row downstairs or the front row of the balcony. The only place in the entire venue where the sound might not be bobbins is right behind the sound desk.
So that's 98% of the venue that's really poor, then.
Even if he is there every night.
Really pissed off it's at the Koko. Literally the only venue in London I won't go to.
with RTJ on at 8pm.
I think ahm oot.
It just gets better!
at least you're getting a show!
which would normally be fine but all the good spots will be taken.
I love early shows as well :(
I really like it, especially cos I live about 20 minutes from all the venues. Saw Ravioli Me Away last night, home by 10:25. YEAH.
"Run The Jewels will put you on the all access guest list plus 1 for any Run The Jewels show anywhere and up to 10 shows. You (and not your plus 1) will be welcome in our back stage before, during and after shows as well as be allowed to hang for soundcheck and load in if you find that sort of thing interesting, have full access to our backstage rider which includes a deli meant tray, various cheeses, a bottle of Henessey, grey goose and various energy bars. We will share our weed with you and let you yell at our tour manager. We will pretend to like you and will introduce you to our friends as our “friend”. Run The Jewels requires a half an hour before stage time to not have to deal with you and your fucking yammering in order to do our pre show stretches, vocal warm ups and crying."
Cats are always srs bsns.
just round the corner from my flat, can't fucking wait
December 10th, The Garage
onsale now at Ticketmaster only apparently
Just bought one :')))))
Zach De La Rocha!!! Amazing.
This is the best one off RTJ2 so far.
So fucking excited.
can't wait to get it :D
...can't help but think that that is a massive waste of time. Alchemist, Just Blaze, Geoff Barrow, Prince Paul... I know its for charity, but will anyone actually listen to it? Wish they'd do a normal remix version.
the people have spoken!
but we've changed our minds. We just want normal songs now. Without cats"
As in, it's in addition to the real RTJ2, not a replacement for it? If so, it's possibly the first bonus disc in history to overshadow its album.
Would be an epic piece of trolling
so, you know.
but if they're using that time and effort to make an album...
CHAIRMAN_LMAO thinks police brutality is a good thing.
They're not going to be pouring sweat and blood into it, cancelling tours, putting their main projects on hiatus, and scrapping albums to make room for the workload.
...video of El-P knocking up a beat, stoned, in about 5 minutes?
I'd rather listen to beats that any of those guys knocked up in 5 minutes rather than something that's trying to be a bit zany is my point.
Meow the Jewels >>>>>
RTJ2 is out.
shall download it at work now, i have to listen quiet on headphones which'll suck BUT oh my RTJ2!
IT'S A WHOLE OTHER LEVEL
i'm only on the 2nd track but he's already made me guffaw at dick lines
oh this is so good.
i bet come the uk gigs all the people there will be geeky DiS types and beards, run the jewels should mahoosive.
Well, basically, the still kind of massive backpacker crowd, the hipsters and the beardy bedwetters.
Love that, rather than a calculated demographic grab, it's just two guys who were never anything less than fucking great, finding even more creative energy in their chemistry. So hype.
...is any stranger to geeky bearded types in his fanbase.
I was pretty surprised by the demographic at the Killer Mike show in Dalston last year actually.
Liking the album a lot. 2nd listen.
so clearly used to dealing with indie dickheads.
He's still a G though.
not as good as the first one, though that took a while to grow on me after Cancer 4 Cure and R.A.P Music were so perfect.
Time is all that's needed.
...but it's still excellent. They set the bar pretty high. I also prefer listening to Killer Mike rap than El-P these days.
but he didn't really get a consistent set of beats... although Pledge II still slays.
In this little era, gonna stick my neck out and say R.A.P. Music > RJT = RTJ2 > C4C in the old rankathon.
...easily my favourite out of those 4. I didn't love C4C at first, but it's really grown on me.
but there's a pdf in the download zip that has all the lyrics in it :D
Love these guys so bloody much.
also says Ikey is on keys on the album too
Little buddy where’s your mommy call me step dad or uncle johnny here’s a dollar don’t follow behind me i gotta go bang out momma and auntie
But instead I feel like that was just the intro for this...
Just didn't realise it was so soon, giving it a listen now but to be fair Im just going to report back saying "awesome" aren't I?
On Lie, Cheat, Steal.
Life pretty much complete
"Runnin the jewels of the game..." etc.
It's really bugging me, so familiar but I can't work out where I recognise it from. Something recent I think
Die in a pitiful vain, tell me a watch and a chain is way more believable, give me a feasible gain... bit?
then I listened to it and wasn't so sure, so didn't bother posting.
close... but still no cigar!
Let me just take this opportunity to say once again how much I'm enjoying this album. I think 'Oh My Darling Don't Cry' is my favourite track.
Also, we've all probably listened to this record enough to form some favourites now, right? Mine might be Early.
but I have no idea what a #fuckboy is, so I didn't bother
"Yes, the title of ‘Love Again (Akinyele Back)’ makes reference to the XXX-rated Queens MC behind the ‘90s oral sex hit ‘Put It In Your Mouth’ – but Gangsta Boo gets a chance to one-up the boys, swapping out the dick chants with something more clit-centric."
Did someone really just write that?
was the bit about Zach De La Rocha '[coming] through to spit some goofy, try-hard "Bombtrack"-style aggro braggadocio that doubles as the best verse of his life'.
1. because it's plainly not, and 2. because slagging RATM is just so lazy that I'd expect it from some idiot blogger trying to be cool, not a Pitchfork journo. Oh well.
cos her verse didn't show up in time. that song without her though, bit of an urgh sausage fest.
Listened to it back to back with RTJ pt. 1 earlier, and that actually feels a bit tossed off in comparison. This loses a little bit of the off-the-cuff fun of the first one, but the flows, beats, lyrics, and direction are way more focused.
It's just the right length for my morning journey. I leave the house in a bleary-eyed daze and get to work ready to tear someone's head off.
It's fucking great and a more cohesive album as a whole but I don't think it can go up against the first one on a track-to-track basis and come out on top.
My "Best Of Jamie & Mike" compilation features six from the first album and four from the second (not including Blockbuster Night pt 2).
That said I'm fucking delighted by all the positive reception, if anyone deserves it those two dudes do.
but it's deeper and more cohesive than I felt initially. I think it edges the first one as an album and will have more longevity.
R.A.P. Music is still my favourite record to come from Jamie & Mike, but this feels pretty special too. Could even end up as my AOTY.
Whereas Pt 1 had no skippable tracks at all.
haven't posted in this thread in a while.
wanted to post that I fucking love this album.
Argh. Fuck you Apple for making it impossible to get this album onto my phone without my Mac.
That heavy riff... lovely stuff
...working with Killer Mike has opened up the realms of collaborators for El-P. Never thought I'd one of Three 6 Mafia over his beats. Good fit IMO.
Listened to Mystic Stylez the other day for the first time in a while 'cos of this album, actually.
but when i stumble upon one of their reviews, it's always one of the worst i've ever read.
Probably playing both primaveras then..
Bit ballsy as they haven't even sold out Koko yet.
if it hasn't please guide me to where the tickets are
You may be correct.
they usually hang around after gigs and meet everyone anyway
haven't listened yet but it's probably good, right?
Give us something different lads. too much in the last 2 years. It's all the same after a while anyway
fwiw, I agree with you. Think that El-P should step back and find a new groove before they do anything else together.
You can have too much of a good thing...
you're in for a treat. rtj were unbelievable last night in manchester...although the crowd were too. enjoy!
Anyone know if they have a support this evening? I know it's an early start.
so no support other than a dj. may be some local support down in london
Often prefer a warm-up DJ at a hip hop show tbh
if i was in london i'd take it, but i'm not, so this is a pointless post.
It was outstanding!
you coming along to the meat later?
It's a naw from me mate, maybe next one.
it would appear that it's not gonna be a full scale mental one though, meeting at sleazys at 6 ish.
see you at the next one! :)
I just dropped you a message for the spare, let me know. Cheers
Hope he doesn't end up guesting on the whole album or some shit.
Let me know if anyone has any spares for this, Cheers.
My idiotic mate booked the evening in then forgot to actually *BUY* the tickets
....that's exactly what i did.
He's such a bell. Got him trawling Twitter for people selling spares.
best of luck.
Just feels like a string of decent verses. WAY TO FORGET THE CHORUSES, FUCKBOYS. Bah.
Is Mike getting bigger?!
Actually excited about this
Zack de la Rocha, Travis Barker, Prince Paul, Big Boi, Massive Attack etc.
I'm not sure whether this is a conscious decision for the project or it's just cos their Rolodex is full of old people. Maybe they even still use a Rolodex, who knows.
lots of wrestling references in it. which is good.
I kind of have a feeling on RTJ1 they had their guard up a little and made it all sound like a bit of a joke, in case it didn't work out. RTJ2 said they're not really fucking around anymore, and a (semi) serious act.
Pressed enter too early.
I wonder if El thinks that a godawful album of cat sounds could actually bring down their rep somewhat haha. From the clips, it sounds in equal measures hilarious and appalling, but then that's what you'd expect.
probably means my speculation is wrong. no idea why they've spent months making it though.
did you see this? https://instagram.com/p/yN4CdUtrIs/
I thought they were fantastic again. It's been a while since I've seen a London crowd so enthusiastic, and on a Sunday night as well.
Anyone care to speculate why they never play Twin Hype? I think they could do with starting to mix the setlist up a bit, since this was basically a repeat of the koko show.
But yeah, crowd were on it. Preferred them at the Electric in Brixton as it was smaller, obvs, but it was good to hear the newer stuff last night.
I did feel momentarily sad that El-P never achieved this much success on his own given how amazing Cancer 4 Cure is but that lasted about 5 seconds.
is a Watch The Throne style tag-team affair, where they mix in their solo stuff throughout the set.
I know they used to start off the gigs with solo sets, but abandoned this, but I think if they mixed them throughout it would be incredible.
Just imagine Full Retard, Tougher, Colder, Killer, Big Beast, and Untitled mixed into yesterdays set + all the rest they could include.
it's still probably the weakest record he's played a lead role in, and his others aren't really geared towards large audiences. In hindsight, a lot of his work stands up better (and probably had more influence) as experimental instrumentals than rap records.
It's no real surprise that RTJ has found more success because it's more accessible, and at the same time easy to forget that he carried the early 2000s underground rap scene almost single handedly. He wasn't exactly a nobody before.
fantastic damage is a properly brilliant record but it's not exactly chocked full of party bangers, part of it's charm is that it's so insular and paranoid
but I got to go for free and the crowd were sooooo up for it. Especially for a Sunday.
wtf was with that guy with the guitar tho
they always seem to be having so much fun.
on The Late Show
so meow the jewels is finally out
You're wasted in whatever you actually do for a living.
Find a job where you just locate appropriate gifs and pictures to post on the internet.
You'd be the world's best.
