what do you think's the standout track of the year so far?
just one each, please, with a youtube or spotify link if you'd be so kind. no indie points on offer for using alternative streaming sites, sorry.
this is probably the track i've listened to most...
http://open.spotify.com/track/0x4ytdRTKX7k6fIiHQFZS2
imagine being so uptight that you didn't like that, eh!

The Idiot Boy
Selfish C*nt
Great choice, mate.
You know your stuff, that's FOR SURE.
Would've been better if you'd written what song it is
Not in a position to open spotify.
it's The House Is Dust By Everything Everything
ohm - yo la tengo
Paddle Forward
is my current favourite off that album
Cecilia and Jane
is fast becoming a YLT favourite for me.
That Knife one
that Factory Floor one
that Mark McGuire one
yeah, no idea which songs you're talking about...
The Knife one is probably Full Of Fire.
Marnie Stern - Year Of The Glad
IT did come at as a single very late 2012, but it was released this year on hew new album so I am counting it anyways.
http://open.spotify.com/track/2quCL7Auyhq9EcUuMUSmLs
fuck.
this has been on all sorts of ads for ages.
good song, but it's got a bit Peter, Bjorn & John for me.
Three more on that album way better than Year of the Glad:
You Don't Turn Down
Nothing Is Easy
Proof of Life
Great album.
Four Tet - For These Times
John Grant - Pale Green Ghosts
Like the Marnie Stern suggestion, was out towards the end of last year, but the album came out this year so there.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ux1fglC0aT0
this and...
Ed Harcourt - Hey Little Bruiser
Eels - Peach Blossom
Dutch Uncles - Nometo
Local Natives - Mt. Washington
Public Service Broadcasting - Everest
Foals - Inhaler
Nick Cave - Mermaids
Suede - most the new album
GOOD
Some good picks...
but Inhaler is the worst thing on that Foals record by some distance. Quite a few people have said it sounds like Kasabian, and they're not wrong.
i'm not even a big Foals fan
but I like that song cos it's big, stupid and sounds a tiny bit like Deftones.
I'm not a big Foals fan either
but the front half of Holy Fire is cracking. There's a lot of preciousness about how much less 'shimmery' and 'intelligent' this album is. I guess I should look into the previous ones.
(and you know when a band has done well when it's used as incidental music for Six Nations coverage)
Good picks and thanks for mentioning Ed
For obvious reasons (I released the record) we've not covered the record on DiS. There's a new video for that track coming very soon tho.
yeah I wondered about the ascence of Edness on here
If I was you I'd be jizzing promo material for that album all over the shop. It's a total beauty.
Peach Blossom is great
but I think Bombs Away is my favourite on Wonderful, Glorious
Surely it's obviously Song For Zula by Phosphorescent?
I just assumed that's what everyone else has been listening to
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcdOLKx2XG8
Good suggestion
No brainer... Autre Ne Veut - Play By Play
Unconventional R&B with no verses or chorus? That'll do!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9uE46sMugw
This
Ego Free Sex Free is also fantastic.
Grouper - Living Room
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnejbIBLGTg
started from the bottom now we hut
hurrrrrrrr
Merchandise - Anxiety's Door
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3QZYHb9xWs
followed by
Apparat - PV
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XBYzv-0xkg
Girls Names - Hypnotic Regression
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJ0htgiJGZo
Blacksmif - How The Fly Saved The River
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phVL6kYC7SA
and Hookworms - Away/Towards
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY5hfF9IB6s
yeah that Hookworms track is a tuneybell
Wow, this is great!
Need to check their album out.
You really do
Everyone does
Youth Lagoon - Mute
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS_d-QD1dOo
hugely disappointing album compared to their previous one.
not a bad track, though.
Was going to this^ this but I didn't really find it disappointing
The first album was patchy with good moments, this one is largely the same. Favourite song is Dropla too.
Dropla's even better imho
I really like the closing track too
but agree, the album was a bit disappointing after the debut.
something from the Matthew E White album
although it's so consistent it's hard to choose one track
Probably Colombia by Local Natives
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMWEwXilWhA
But Jubilee Street by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds runs it quite close.
Columbia for sure
It's quite a hard listen though, I get this lump in my throat...
Cult Of Luna - Vicarious Redemption
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTc75Qbb_Qg
i know that it's definitely not the track of the year so far
but i LOVE that new Suede single and I don't care who knows it. I've heard it on the radio and in shops and it feels like a proper single like wot bands used to release in the old days (as in, 6 years ago).
with you on that
not sure yet about the rest of the album, but that song struts around the room
He sounds exactly like Ricky Gervais in Seona Dancing
nick cave - higgs boson blues
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQud7EFQ3zQ
Phosphorescent - Down to Go
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHMep5P7eTo
Johnny Marr - New Town Velocity
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmBrxh1eoCQ
Nick Cave - Jubilee Street
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYyX1ISE6KQ
Came here to post Jubilee Street
My Bloody Valentine - In Another Way
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oXJus1ajIU
Autechre - jatevee C
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Hlt7Uo9yik
Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused To Sing
Super proggy post-rock loveliness. Can't get enough of it. Also, fantastic video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4XevlloPY4
(not a very DiS choice I suppose...)
This album is awesome.
Checked it after hearing that Guthrie Govan did the guitar work on it.
I discovered Guthrie Govan
through the album. So job very much done, there! And yes, the whole album is astonishingly good.
Jakwob - Blinding
http://m.youtube.com/results?q=jakwob%20blinding#/watch?v=Qx74mYOiGFA
The 1975 - Chocolate
http://m.youtube.com/results?q=chocolate%20the%201975#/watch?v=FfBKqaVk2Co

My band is gigging at Jakwob's sister's wedding soon
Grouper - Vital
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=o0A36Zb1ZmI
I don't know if it's my standout favourite but it sits alongside some of the suggestions made here already.
Conquering Animal Sound - The Future Does Not Require
http://open.spotify.com/track/4FgA9Sj2dCL8uENfl0TNkA
how can i pick just one
Atoms for peace track?
Laura Mvula's Green Garden is just terrific.
Not very DiS I know, but there we go.
Inga Copeland - Speak
http://youtu.be/hMon8Mnb3UM

Mirrors
This, Tunnel Vision, Strawberry Bubblegum and Blue Ocean Floor are all contenders.
Don't Hold The Wall is a fucking banger, too
Dawn Richard - Break of Dawn
http://open.spotify.com/track/3h8yFS6Goom81SCeWucU3P
Wonderful r&b mid-tempo number from the best album of the year so far.

Post War Glamour Girls - Jazz Funerals
http://soundcloud.com/i-like-press/01-jazz-funerals
I may have a vested in this band, but I wouldn't be involved if I didn't think they were pretty special. Like a cross between The Birthday Party/Grinderman and early Interpol.
Agree with this, it's so good
Well the record I've been obsessed with
is The Terror by The Flaming Lips, but picking a standout track is hard. Maybe Try To Explain for the emotional weight. No link I'm afraid.
Probably Fix My Life by Melt Yourself Down
or the re-released We Are Enough from the same single.
http://meltyourselfdown.bandcamp.com/
Still seems weird to hear this on a Sharwoods advert.
Here's the video for Fix My Life.
Watch it full-screen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eoVLfPszeQ
Fix My Life rules my brain
and We Are Enough is equally fantastic. They'd better do a whole record
Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyDUC1LUXSU
this song is absolutely everwhere.
i really don't like it at all.
Factory Floor - Fall Back

here's a nice live performance of it too!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74_54V0tdRM
I haven't heard the recorded verison yet...
but I can safely say based on their live performance of it the other week that the best track released this year will be

I've heard it now
I was right.

Suuns - 2020
(Most specifically, the bit where the beat kicks in to back up the absolutely evil riff about a minute in - my favourite music moment of the year)*
*Although it is closely followed by the climax of 'Jubilee Street'
Gazelle Twin - This Is My Hand
Just wait 'til you get to hear the new Six By Seven stuff
Truce is monumemntal
stoked
Truce is very good
very, very Get A Real Tattoo mind you. although 6x7 have never been afraid of ripping themselves/others off - it's something they do very well, and it's not like they're much about melody anyway. Incredible sound.
I cannot wait to hear the new album live on April 4th at Watr Rats
It's gonna be an epic night.
yes, and see you there :)
Saw their previous (brilliant) London gig, at the Luminaire in 2007. Still have the shirt. That was after their previous surprise reformation! And to think they outlived the venue...
Make sure you come and say Hi Loui.
My Brother & I are putting on that night (I'm Chris). I'll buy you a beer Mate. I'll probably be on the door.
gotchaaaaa
no worries about the beer! i'll be wearing a retro 6x7 shirt and probably still sporting a limp/crutch
oh and have a word with Echoboy, tell him that Wasted Spaces is requested
would make my evening (well, 6x7 will do that anyway but yknow) :D
We've told Rich that if he ever fancies doing an Echoboy set for us...
he is more than welcome. He's entertaining the idea, but he's still exploring the Southern Blues stuff at the moment, which is still great by me.
And I agree. Wasted Spaces is an EPIC song. Probably be played during the DJ set anyway!!!
My Bloody Valentine - Only Tomorrow
You're a fool if you think there are no indie points on offer in this thread
This is the annual Euromillions non-rollover jackpot for indie points
The Juan Maclean - You Are My Destiny
yay. housey good vibes.
also...
'Step' by Vampire Weekdend is gorgeous.
(apologies, I am basically just trawling Best New Tracks and catching up on new tunes).
Just posted the playlists on the main site too http://drownedinsound.com/news/4146222-playlist--dis-communitys-favourite-songs-of-the-1st-quarter-of-2013
I just assumed this whole thread was for the Limp Bizkit/Lil Wayne song

Throwing the new Mount Kimbie in to the mix
Sounds so, so good.
http://www.goldflakepaint.co.uk/fresh-licks-mount-kimbie-made-to-stray/
not really bothered much this year
aside from blurred lines ft. t.i. & pharrell, tunnel vision is the best thing timbaland's done in years, it's INCREDIBLE, it might be overall co-produced, but it's easily something he could have co-wrote with missy fifteen years ago and then added a shitload of strings and then reversed them. millions ft. rick ross is probably my most played, though.
sounds like i was implying timbaland produced it :(
i had three separate paragraphs and merged them all together shouldn't, have bothered
The Big Ship - A Rabbit
This is a bit gorgeous http://vimeo.com/61477696
This new Holden track it pretty great
