Has there been a thread about the new Depeche Mode album yet?

Recently been getting into Depeche Mode - not their earlier more well-known stuff, but everything from Ultra onwards.

Given the success of Kasabian, I'm surprised there hasn't been a critical re-appraisal of Ultra. Granted, Depeche Mode don't have a dancing monkey for a frontman, but you can guarantee that Kasabian would give their left bollock to write a tune like this:

Anyhow, let's get to the cut-and-thrust of things. Plenty of people on these boards got a hard-on for Darkstar. Let's face it, Darkstar at their best can't even hold a candle to Dave Gahan at his worst.

Glad we all agree.

  • Wow, Dave was really going for a Brian Molko thing back then wasn't he?

I haven't heard any of the new stuff yet but I'll be seeing them for the fourth time this year. Read an interview with Martin saying that to him the new stuff was somewhere between songs of faith and devotion and violator. Can't help but think that's wishful thinking but it'd be great.

    • It's very wishful thinking

It just sounds like SOTU part 2 to me though as I said I've only listened to it once. Mostly plodding mid-tempo dirges with a couple of notable exceptions (Soft Touch/Raw Nerve is great).
