So far its been pretty great. Given that generally I consider them a bit average/dull this is good news. They've ramped up the funk a fair amount on some of the tracks.
and yet I can't stop singing 'Cruel Summer' over the first track...
try to give off an 80s vibe nowadays ka-ching?
The ending is majestic.
This is hit and miss, but the great stuff is really enjoyable and enough for me to not write them off.
I thought the last album was far and away their best since the debut.
Genuinely don't trust anyone who doesn't rate Room On Fire.
I know it's too early to say that this is their 3rd best album, but that's kinda how I'm feeling right now....
''come on everyone do that congo''
my mind is having a meltdown
I would say it's their best set of songs since Room on Fire maybe even better.
quite liking the rest of it though
Decent cover of Gotta Be Startin Something first up though...
Like how they have let the music do the talking.
its better than those albums where its silence
why isn't this stupid Pitchfork thingy working for me? No sound!
Still think this new "immersive" thing they're trying is naff.
Album sounds good 20 seconds in.
all over the place, not necessarily in a good way.
That's one of the best compliments you can give to a band sometimes.
Reckon I'll grow to love this.
liked pretty much every track, especially that tom waits style closer.
i really liked angles for the most part but have a feeling ill like this even more after a few listens.
sounds like phoenix.
also i dunno why i wasn't sure about one way trigger before that's probably top 5 songs they've ever done
better than angles
half of it is passable / bad
it's different enough from Is This It/Room On Fire that I don't feel like I need to compare them at all - I can just enjoy this as much or as little as I like without it impacting on what I think of their old stuff at all
I like when that happens.
Totally agree mate. Expectations low after angles, and thought one way trigger was elaborate hoax!. Now in context of album think it is genius. Album of year so far!
and thought it was pretty boring and hated how his vocals were always so low in the mix. Thought Angles was a pretty great album. Weird right?
It'll shortly move to second spot in the Reckoning Strokes Albums chart, i'm sure of it.
"what kind of asshole drives a lotus?"
Most interesting thing they've done - can't stop listening to it.
I was never that taken with 'Is This It?' to be honest - I missed all the hype over that one and only jumped on board at 'Room On Fire' which I listened to quite a lot when it was released.
This is just a much richer collection of songs than they've done before. The sheer variety on here is worthy of credit, if nothing else, but the fact that the album sounds so good all the way through sells it for me.
Seriously, I cannot believe how much this album keeps you on your toes - 'Tap Out', 'One Way Trigger', Welcome to Japan', '80s Come down Machine', Chances' and then 'Call it Kate, Call it Karma' - they're all so distinct. Compared to this run, 'Is This It?' sounds one note.
I mean, I can't understand the bemused reception that the final track gets from some quarters - it's fantastic. Who wuld have though the band that apparently single-handedly ressurected the indie scene with their skinny jeans, leather jackets and Converse, could write a track which sounds like it should feature in an episode of 'Boardwalk Empire'.
This is a stand out of 2013 so far ladies and gents and a totally unexpected on too. I never thought that much of Strokes before now but they've earned by respect now for what it's worth.
...like going on a bender thru the 80's with kit from knight rider. last track sounds like a beautiful nightmare orchestrated by david lynch under starlight on a hawaiian beach. or something. it actually made me cry a little bit.
Still a bit early, but almost certainly their worst album for me. Even Angles had one or two fantastic songs.
I really like 80's Comedown Machine, and Chances is ok too, but everything else just seems so limp.
