listened to Giant Steps just last night there. what an album. underrated band
but yeah...good album

People forget just how acclaimed they were at the time. NME gave every album (not sure what they gave EAF) a 9 out of ten. Giant Steps was album of the year in Select magazine who called it the real "rebel" music of the time. It was number 2 in NME. There was feature after feature about how audacious and gorgeous that album was. Similiar praise greeted Wake Up and C'Mon kids obviously challenged some people but it was still hugely acclaimed commercial suicide. I personally can't imagine a more eclectic and bizarre album being released today. It would have been hard to believe at the time that they would go on to be a footnote of the Britpop era. My opinion is their entire discography (which the majority is collected on the fantastic cherry red reissues, the B-sides are the whole other story of this band)is one of the most musically adventurous and rewarding ever recorded.

Giant Steps is a good start but it took me years to escape thinking it's patchy (it's got some very immediate pop songs interspersed with some that aren't so).
Wake Up Boo is a bit unbalanced, but contains a couple of gems beyond the very radio friendly singles it's known for
C'Mon Kids for me is the play from start to finish masterpiece. But this is the sound of noise and pop from a pretty messed up angle. For me, it's non-stop perfection, ultra-pop but not so radio-friendly..haha
Kingsize is a more futuristic take of the same vein, some very nice pop songs, with a distinct melancholy feel.
Everything's Alright Forever, I've sadly never got round to listening to.
This is a band where you're almost better sliding across their records letting individual tracks get you, and then slowly one of the albums will pull you in, and then the others

Been bumping into the band's name for ages but never actually checked out their music despite all the raving I get. These are pretty good pointers and definitely gonna check out the band properly now (Lazarus alone already pretty much perked my interest and the rest seem good too on a quick first listen).
Might as well go straight for the best one. GS is a wondrous thing as detailed above. Many, many, SO many amazing songs. Everything's Alright Forever, good but less immediate. Wake Up, I'm not a great fan of 'that song' but otherwise the album has loads of goodies on it. It's much poppier than what came before though. C'mon Kids I find excessively bombastic but I know many disagree. Kingsize I loved at the time but I don't feel it's aged well. Again I know many disagree.

I think that album (rightly) was NME album of the year voted for by its readers. That was in the early 90s before The NME became an Oasis/Blur loving magazine and basically an updated version of Look In.
I bought it the week it came out.

No one's getting any younger. Early 90s = the best years for indie music.
in the way people talk about, say, Radiohead. "Underrated" doesn't begin to cover it. All the B-sides as well.
Caught up with an old schoolmate whose band were on Creation around the same time as the Boos (he was in Adorable) not long after Kingsize came out, & he was bemoaning the fact that Creation were spunking all their cash on Oasis & various soundalikes, yet they had arguably the best album of 1998 on their roster & basically did fuck all to promote it.
And C'mon Kids has to be one of the most thrilling album openers ever.

Wake Up perked my interest as an 11 year old britpop fan, but oddly it was Find the Answer Within which did it for me, such a beautiful melody in the chorus. The High Llamas remix of it on one of the singles is stunning. From there I picked up C'mon Kids, again just some bloody beautiful melodies peeking out of songs, walls of noise, loads of quirkiness. Giant Steps I had on tape for years, absolutely incredible - I'd get this over anything else. I did get Everythings Alright Forever but didn't really understand it as a kid, I wondered why I couldn't hear the vocals, assumed my copy was corrupt somehow. Only looking back did I appreciate the shoegaze. Kingsize is a great discoggraphy closer, some wonderful pop songs, heartbreaking melancholy throughout.
soundtracked the summer of '92 perfectly. teenage angst etc. the production on this record is awesome. dont know how it was done....very heavy but through a thick psychedelic summer static haze. their EPs at the time were also amazeballs.
I love the fuzzy haze of EAF and the early EPs. The later stuff is great but but I don't feel it in the same way.
Check out this track off the early Boo Up! EP. The waves of sound towards the end are amazing.

but they could also be amazing. The best I ever saw them was when they supported Manic Street Preachers at the Royal Albert Hall, they were absolutely brilliant.
It's still a toss-up between Giant Steps and C'Mon Kids for my favourite, but Everything's Alright Forever and Learning To Walk (collection of their early EPs) sound more and more wonderful to me with the passage of time.
Wake Up is fantastic too, and has more weird moments on it than people generally give it credit for. The only one that doesn't really do it for me is Kingsize: it's got a few flashes of brilliance but it really feels like their enthusiasm for the whole thing was gone by that point.
it exhales winter... was so obviously their swansong when it was released.

loved the boos but for me the vocals are always the weakest link

in a school near where I live, that some of my friends went to.
I heard Wake Up! at the height of Britpop but never liked it enough to buy it, the first thing I got was the Find The Answer Within single after hearing it on the radio (or maybe even the Chart Show?) and loving the chorus, somehow I managed to buy the second single which was a remix by the High Llamas rather than the real thing. Beautiful song that, shame the verses are a bit meh. I must have been around 12 at the time. As with everything I bought back then I listened it to death and loved the B-sides. Then I got the only thing I could find by them in my local Virgin Megastore which was Everything's Alright Forever. It is more shoegaze which I had never encountered before, I actually thought there was something wrong with my CD as I couldn't hear the vocals... Took me a few years to rediscover that. Next some time later was C'mon Kids, the single of Bench at Belvedere (discovered through some Shine indie comp?) and then everything else. Kingsize is a beautiful swansong, shame Free Huey is pretty shite, I think that failing to get anywhere sped up their demise. Overall they stopped me from listening to shit 90s indie and try and seek out more interesting stuff.
