"Tonight, Tonight" has the best music video ever made
I saw it for the first time the other day, and it's just so incredibly theatrical and romantic and amazing, and just inarguably the best video ever. The song's great too, of course. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOG3eus4ZSo
When I was 12 i got in an arguement with my mate after I said that
that "I wish I was a girl" song was bad and he was dumb for liking it.
He shot back that I liked the Smashing Pumpkins. He said he'd seen this video on Kerrang and that it was "the shittest song [he]ever heard"
What an absolute.
^This to OP
if it wasn't for...
...Jagger and Bowie's blowtastic 'Dancing In The Street' (link below for the uninitiated) i would totally agree with you. yours is a close second tho.

fucking........
hell
Irony?
I can't tell?
me neither.
for them or me.
i think i really do love it. how can you not? its beyond reason.
I see your Mick and Dave
and raise you Phil Collins and Philip Bailiey. It's just as "wacky" and "charming". Though the only charity was for Phil's alimony payments.
fantastic call.
i fucking loved this song. when i was about eight. who's to say its not better than the new Atoms for Peace record?
I watched Martin Scorsese's Hugo last year
which makes reference to the film director Georges Melies, and it was only then that I realised this video is a tribute to his films!
I prefer the 1979 video though I think, all woozy and summery.
Hugo is an INCREDIBLE film
Required watching if you like the Tonight, Tonight video - and required watching if you like... films.
ava adore is better
Darcy looks beautifully demented in Ava Adore
It's awful
Looks like a Eurythmics video.
But...it isn't.
*arguably
Nah, I meant inarguably.
You were wrong though.
As a band, I think Smashing Pumpkins have possibly the best collection of videos
Particularly the Mellon Collie vids - each one fits the song perfectly.
except try, try, try that can get to fuck
That the short film they did?
That was grim. Pretty much wanted to go curl up in a ball and greet for a week after that.
well
they didn't really have anything to do with the 15 min film, it just got edited into a music video by the director. anyway I hate it.
That is good, I've never seen it before
Reminds me a bit of the Mercury Rev Opus 40 video directed by Anton Corbin.

Eh
I was never a fan of that video. I get the Melies reference, but still...it just doesn't...well look that good to me. Much like Hugo in fact. I wasn't impressed, even if Scorsese was just paying his respects to an influence. It just came across as nauseating pastiche.
I like to imagine James Iha's reaction when they suggested putting him in "white face"...."You gonna do what?!"
I love the melies film
it is kind of hypnotic watching because it is so deteriorated

dont like the air soundtrack
Hugo
was hilariously awful. Terrible script, terrible acting, terrible plot (there was a plot?) and it looked terrible. I loved it!
sounds amazing
I have issues with some of the physics.
..and of course his whiney voice.
Hey-ho.
1979
Right band, right album, wrong song, wrong video
I remember back in the day reading in kerrang that they lost the tapes for the first video they shot for 1979 and had to re do it, they did a pretty good job it is the perfect video for a perfect song. I dont understand why that song is so good, play just the guitar line and it is just nothing, a case of being way more than the sum of its parts.
then they did a sequel with the same kids and I refuse to watch it
It's like another Death from Above or Postal Service album or Michael Owen going back to Liverpool.
Perfect
right? that video is awful
wait...
are we talking about the mello-kings song or the genesis song?
I think I prefer Ave Adore Darcy looking demented
and
Bullet with butterfly wings - Darcy looking somehow 'Wasted'
I like her 'attitude' in this
the incongruity of her dress and makeup set against the backdrop of mud and her guitar playing postures
is the thing that first made me pay real attention to the smashing pumpkins, althought the brilliant song ( though cliched now) and video to match also helped
I can definately enjoy that video more in retrospect.
At the time it was so weird to see Billy looking like uncle fester and the band doing something so different.
The mid 90s to early 00s
was such a high watermark for music videos in general, just nobody would pay to have something like that made anymore. Even Radiohead can't be arsed to make expensive videos anymore. It's sad.
At least with have Ok Go
we*
Radiohead's videos for Just and Paranoid Android
were awesome several times over and pre-space jazz.
I kinda agree, I think
There's a lot of music videos I really love, but whenever I see this one it makes me think how great the format can truly be at its best. There's something really enchanting and iconic to it.
it's not a good video
this is good
