Project Essential help (again, sigh)

Does anybody else have this turntable, if you do would be you be so kind to lift the tone arm up, turn it upside down and take a wee picture of the hole underneath that sits it on the turnable. I think a bit of plastic might be missing form mine causing mis-tracking and need to see if it's that or just being a bit crap.

Thanks xxxxx

  • Will do this for you once the LP I'm listening to has finished.

good kid maad city, if you were wondering.

  • Whilst we're talking project essential

Hated it for the first few hours I had it, thought no turntable would be worth that much hassle, but I've had it for nearly 2 years now and it's served me well. Only pain in the arse is that my counterweight seems to fall off (and down the back of my desk) every week and I spend 10 minutes finding it.

  • Thanks

looks like I imagined the bit of plastic as mine looks exactly the same as yours. Also, I think you are meant to tighten your counterweight on as it's not meant to fall off haha.

I'm pulling my hair out over mine right now, I've had it since Jan 2012 and gone through various phases of loving/hating it.

For months its been fine, playing beautifully and used several times a week. Now it's being a fucking dickslap again and just sounding really distorted every now and then. I'm sure its to do with the way the tone arm sits because it doesn't have a removable catridge to 'calibrate' and the stylus is fine. Gonna take it to a hifi specialist and see what they think, it's nuts.

  • Related but separate.

I got a new turntable at the end of last year, and it was a toss up between the Project Essential and the Rega RP1. Both were about the same price (though I think the Rega was maybe very slightly more) and in all the reviews I read on them, there seemed to be nothing between them in terms of build and sound quality. In the end I went for the Rega as the whole counterweight thing on the Project seemed like a bit of a faff, and I simply preferred the look of it (I wasn't keen on the band running round the outside of the turntable.

In the end, I think I made the right choice going by this thread! The Project just seems like too much hard work...

    • Yeah, i was considering selling my Pro-ject for a Rega

but then realised it's got a couple of band stickers on the lid and nobody wants a second hand audiophile turntable when it's only 150 for a new one.

When it works fine, it's a dream. Even my old ELO and Talking Heads LPs from charity shops sound glorious when it's not being a prick. When i'm getting wavering distortion every couple of minutes in and out of clarity on new pressings it can fuck off. I don't understand what prompts it! I've done nothing different to the last time I played these records! FUCK
