---And then on the other side, the poetry side, I look at people like Billy Corgan and that white energy is powerful too, I feel a lot from the white energy on a certain level – but that is a white energy and it’s different---
at least not in this form. this strain will fade like chillwave or seapunk or whichever ridiculous whatever, and a few people who were actually good might remain. to me inc. are on the worst side of the spectrum; musically, they just seem to blend covers of 90s r&b. just some really derivative, forgettable stuff. for most of these groups, the songs seem quite secondary to fitting in with or creating a certain aesthetic. this 90s 'fashion' revival is absurd
the "this stuff has a dark history you know? This music is not a trend, this shit comes from straight whipping and horrible, horrible shit, you know?" part is pretty fucking special as well
it's cool, there are no issues over all of that extraneous stuff.
although I guess I hate white appropriations of jazz and blues, stuff made palatable for white audiences in the bad old days, and almost any Nina Simone covers.
but HTDW, Autre Ne Veut... any others who do it right, it's okay, you can sing that way, if that's how you express yrself best. if it feels true to you.
I dont even have a problem with these guys being idiots but the music isn't good enough for me to defend or dismiss the idiocy. I listen to tons of musicians that have said/done way worse things. More often than not I separate art from the artist but sometimes you just have flip the hypocrite switch and take a stance for the good of the people.
i mean his second album kinda is, and i think it's pretty shit as a result. But i always thought his first was much more of an ambient sort of record. As in, i like the atmosphere it has much more than the actual songs, if you get me.
I dont like the first one because I cant get passed the sound quality issues.
I know the htdw guys has tried to distance himself from the genre tags and just do his thing and thats cool by me. The music just doesnt grab me is all. The few things from the Autre Ne Veut album I've heard have seemed really good to me.
(or maybe the listener can go in with pre-concieved bias) by the dialogue that often surrounds it. It's kinda lame getting into genre tag wars n all, but stuff like this makes you want to hate everything closely associated with it.
who the hell are the aged brothers? who cares about them? and Billy Corgan? Why not Fiona Apple? Now THERE'S some white soul poetry for ya!! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HAAAAA !!!!!
Here’s the thing – we never called ourselves R&B, so for people to say, ‘you’re making R&B but you’re not putting the voice up’ – that’s not our problem. This is our own music so we don’t have any parameters for what we want to do.
Even if they said the race stuff in a trolly way, or it was presented in a trolly way aint they just saying they want to sound like I dunno Phill Collins doing an 80s R&B ballad rather than anyone more traditional like Marvin Gaye. Aint that a legit musical choice, there is defo a diffrence in musical vibe. They can do what they want with R&B sounds even if they sound like a twat saying and doing it and a bit racist haha.
Obv they can do whatever they like and are trying their best to distance themselves and carve a new path but they just come off really poorly. More funny than anything.

Oh wow.
Worse than sobstep
Hate all that indie r and b shite.
Havn't even listened to them, but its one of those fads isn't it?
Who knows
How to Dress Well has produced two very good albums though.
nah
The first one is basically unlistenable to me.
The other one was better but still just too limp for me to engage with overall.
I listened to a bit of the first one and it sounded like a bad recording of someone doing a comedy Prince impression in the shower
also there was a song called 'Can't See My Own Face'.
Wow
Without getting too carried away, I think that piece is the worst thing that I have ever read. And I have read some proper shit on the internet too...
Christ.
What an abomination of an interview.
argh
can't wait for r&b to stop being hip
i mean it's not stopped me listening to it or anything, but these freaks are grating
I dont think it will last long?
Who knows.
probably not
at least not in this form. this strain will fade like chillwave or seapunk or whichever ridiculous whatever, and a few people who were actually good might remain. to me inc. are on the worst side of the spectrum; musically, they just seem to blend covers of 90s r&b. just some really derivative, forgettable stuff. for most of these groups, the songs seem quite secondary to fitting in with or creating a certain aesthetic. this 90s 'fashion' revival is absurd
I just listened to their album
"Stripping the goodness out of R&B" would've been more accurate dohohoho
haha yes
That Billy Corgan part, though.
Kind of an all time classic quote. So many things wrong with it.
it basically sounds like something a dodgy right wing politician might say
FILL MY SOUL WITH THAT WHITE ENERGY!
Now we're full into Branch Davidian
White Energy sounds like the name of some skinhead OI! band
There's an embarrassment of riches in terms of utterly appalling quotes
the "this stuff has a dark history you know? This music is not a trend, this shit comes from straight whipping and horrible, horrible shit, you know?" part is pretty fucking special as well
feeling a bit low about white energy today
ffs
why can't music just be music.
doesn't matter about skin colour or context
just that music resonates with people and maybe they start trying to make music like that music.
In a perfect world.
good people should just come and hang out in my head
it's cool, there are no issues over all of that extraneous stuff.

Yeah this stuff can be done right no doubt.
I dont even have a problem with these guys being idiots but the music isn't good enough for me to defend or dismiss the idiocy. I listen to tons of musicians that have said/done way worse things. More often than not I separate art from the artist but sometimes you just have flip the hypocrite switch and take a stance for the good of the people.
i feel like maybe you listen to HTDW like he's r&b
i mean his second album kinda is, and i think it's pretty shit as a result. But i always thought his first was much more of an ambient sort of record. As in, i like the atmosphere it has much more than the actual songs, if you get me.
i dunno
Ha, that's probably why I like the 2nd album a little better.
This is also a case where the music can be overshadowed
(or maybe the listener can go in with pre-concieved bias) by the dialogue that often surrounds it. It's kinda lame getting into genre tag wars n all, but stuff like this makes you want to hate everything closely associated with it.
Autre Ne Veut I need to check out though.
cba reading that
but i've been waiting for a chance to gripe about how much it riles me that the new fact logo is ripping off(/a homage to?) the face mag.
AH! I thought it looked shockingly familiar.
First off,
who the hell are the aged brothers? who cares about them? and Billy Corgan? Why not Fiona Apple? Now THERE'S some white soul poetry for ya!! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HAAAAA !!!!!
It does sound like they're trolling for hits with the race stuff and even the R&B stuff...
they say
Here’s the thing – we never called ourselves R&B, so for people to say, ‘you’re making R&B but you’re not putting the voice up’ – that’s not our problem. This is our own music so we don’t have any parameters for what we want to do.

I dont scan any trolling in there but hard to tell without
hearing the interview.
Obv they can do whatever they like and are trying their best to distance themselves and carve a new path but they just come off really poorly. More funny than anything.
"Yeah it's this old comedian Freddie Starr. He's kind of like the original Bill Hicks."
