DiStape Club - March edition
Who's in this month? If you could send me your email addresses that'd be lovely - I'll work out this mail-merging malarkey hopefully. You don't need to send your postal address because I have that already.
Theme suggestions? I'm thinking religion might be good what with Easter coming up and everything.

Yes please.
Fine with the theme (although I think anyone who includes Easter by Marillion should be banned from DiS for life)
CardINal O'Brien
I'm happy with that theme, and it'll not be a major research project like my World Music mix has turned out to be.
I moved house recently, so will send you my new address.
If any old mixes go to my old address it's ok, as it's my parents house.
Yeah religion sounds like a good one actually!
Despite only receiving 1 mix, I'm still in for doing this. Be nice to have more feedback from people (nowheresnigh liked my Space one though!)
I've been enjoying the world music mix a lot!
Sorry, I would have left a note last week but I've been working hard on my own belated world mix. (veridisjoe I should get it in the post by the end of the week.)
I especially enjoyed Alec Empire, Puffy AmiYumi, Hi-Standard and Kvelertak. I reckon the Rodeo Idiot Engine track is my favorite so far. Meaty.
The only track I'd heard before was Falco so it was all good really. The facts sheet was great too, Thanks!
No probs. :)
Glad you like it! I got sent the Rodeo Idiot Engine album to review by a metal site I used to write for. Absolute chaos that album, it's so abrasive and insane. Thought I should spread their terror. I apologise for putting Rock Me Amadeus on that. :D
for my sINs
Though I still need to send a mix which I've fallen a bit behind on, hope I can still play.
Hell yes.
I'm in. I am going to start putting my World Mix together tonight.
I like the theme too, might force myself to try something different to what my gut reaction tells me to do.
Will pm you my email. If you can figure out the mail merging you will be a happy man
My gut reaction won out
I've already done it. Religion mix poured straight out of me when I was intending on doing the World mix. Totally changed what I am doing now, but it's all laid out ready for assembly.
definitely in
and h-stein, your world mix is finally on cd after some technical difficulties with my stupid laptop. apologies for the delay. in the post (for real this time) tomorrow.
I'm going to have to pull out
Too far behind already. I'm just going to honor my committments. May join in again when less busy. Can't get organise right now, booo.
Think I'm gonna sit this one out
I've really enjoyed making the four I've made, and there's been some really great stuff on the two I've got back, but I seem to be manically busy at the moment and I don't wanna turn this into something that feels like a chore. Maybe in a month or two.
yup
I'm in again
I don't know if theo received my world mix as I haven't had any feedback. I can send it again if you haven't got it yet. I haven't received either nature or world mixes yet. I keep my fingers crossed.
BUMP
remember, if you want in you need to send me your email!
Ok count me in again
Pm sent. Are you sure i can't put easter by marillion on, basil? Quality tune
No!
No REM either plz.
If anyone wants to listen to my scrapped religion mix
it's here https://soundcloud.com/clem-mcculloch-1/religion-v1
I'm starting over!
I thought I'd replied here.
I'm in.
Didn't do last month's
Sorry to whoever my partner was. To be honest the theme completely put me off. I don't know where all the people I listen to come from, and who cares if I mainly listen to UK/US artists? I wasn't happy about making a substandard mix that my heart wasn't in.
I think I'm taking this too srsly. I don't know if I'm ready to be back in yet.
I've sort of had the opposite problem
Didn't particularly like the world theme either so I got inventive and it's ended up taking over my evenings for the past couple of weeks. Too far gone to stop now though!
same here - it ended up as a 4 disk
2 world tour, 1 germany and 1 nordic tour, just stopped myself from doing australia and japan as well.
I'm with you on this
World was far to open ended. Normally I add a sub title or another element to limit myself, this one inspiration was lacking.
I am doing mine now
Enjoying it a lot. My recipient will be happy to hear I have not gone for the Finnish Black Metal mix I was intending. The sub-theme I have ended up with goes off topic occasionally, but that's o.k.
I put my Nature mix up on Soundcloud if anyone's interested. Might not do this every time, but probably will for the next couple - world and religion.
https://soundcloud.com/meatbreak/luminousshadows
world mix was a good and enjoyable education though
i had no idea i liked stuff from places like serbia/ukraine/romania/lithuania.
I also held off with an
Eastern European BM mix. That area is rife with rural forest metal.
That's sort of my point
I don't care what country the people that make the music I listen to come from. If that happens to be local then what's wrong with that? I could make a mixtape that was hours long of music that was made by people from Manchester and not include fucking Oasis or the Stone Roses or the Smiths because I live in Manchester so I'm going to be more exposed to music that's made in Manchester. I don't think that's a problem to the extent that I should go out of my way to figure out where everything I listen to is from. Maybe I should have just sent my partner a copy of the Razika album, that's great and they totally don't sing in English the whole time so I'm pretty confident they're not from the UK or US
actually
I was going to suggest a Home Town Mix as a theme.
I think it would be nice. Some of us would find it really easy, other people might draw a total blank. They could just pick a town.
Quit being such a massive fucking weiner about it, maybe?
If saying that
I didn't do something because I couldn't be arsed figuring out where everyone in my iTunes library came from before I made a mixtape makes me a massive fucking weiner then so be it. Yer ma never complains
Fair enough if you don't want to do it you obviously don't have to but you should really consider other people. It's just a bit douchey to effectively say you were too lazy to message me telling me you weren't doing it and now the person you were paired up with is in all likelihood not going to get a mixtape.
Yeah that's fair enough
I didn't actually receive a mixtape myself so I'd forgotten about it until this thread popped up, in all honesty
I like it
I like to know where people are from, it's interesting. For example, AMDISCS - witchy-housey electronics label is based in Prague and they put out a load of European music from weird places that you would just assume is American, but is not. Maybe you don't care, but I like to think that there's some hyper-glo pop techno being made in a Romanian village. It gives it context.
I am also very anal about my folder naming - I think it comes from listening to a lot of Metal where there's a lot of similar named bands. I put the country in brackets after the artists name. I do this for everyone so all I have to do is search for Greece and I get all the Greek music in my library.
Maybe shouldn't admit such tragically fastidious filing habits in public.
Do a Rammstein best of then
That would literally be a blank CD
yeah you were my partner andyvine so i didn't make an effort with it.
Praising the Lords I am IN!
yep me too please
I got a mix for the first time this year so i'm fired up.....religion is it?
Yeah, and send me your email address please if that's OK
Everyone that's signed up for this month so far should have an email
with their recipient's details. Get mixing you shits.
I made two different mixtapes.
One had a great theme; the other had some better songs.
I'm sending the one with the theme.
H-Stein
your March mix is in the post.
Consecrate yourself in preparation
that was maybe pointless posting it yesterday
will probably take a week getting through the snow. oh well.
Not to worry
I look forward to receiving it. TBH I've only just finished my world mix so am a bit behind myself.
Got it yesterday
It looks dark, as a goat love religion mix might. Great artwork and it looks like I haven't a scooby who any of the tracks are by (although from the font it's difficult to read the names!).
I'll give it a spin soon and report back. Cheers!
I really enjoyed making this one
Choosing an impenetrable font seemed appropriately cryptic and occult. I can pm you the tracklist in sensible font if you do want to know who you're listening to. I don;t think it;s unreadable, but then I know who is on it, and my eyes have become accustomed to metally fonts.
I'll apologise now for the length, I got a bit carried away. Listening back, I think I should have cut at least 4 tracks out to keep it around 40/50 minutes. Never mind.
No idea if you like this kind of music - but it's less a collection of songs, more a suite of the three Satanic rituals - erotic, compassionate, destructive; an intellectual decompression chamber.
.
anyways - enjoy!!!
My "world" mix is 4 hours long!
I'm hardly entitled to complain if a mix is too long...
Black metal isn't really my thing unfortunately
However, I did listen to your mix all the way through and thought that the mixing and (obviously) theming were up there with the artwork. Alas, once I've heard three or four growly black metal numbers, I've heard them all.
that was the risk I took
not sure there's many people on these boards who would enjoy an hour of that, so I'm kind of flattered you stuck it out to the end. Worth it for all the fire and brimstone preachers though....right? Black diamond express train to hell! Glad you liked it as much as possible.
That's another reason I think it's too long, it's a bit samey for anyone not really into that stuff. Although part of my intention was to overdo the baphometic brutality.
I want to hear this!
Are you going to put it on Soundcloud by any chance?
Yeah
Now that Mr Stein has digested it I'll put it up for public consumption. Will do it tonight if my internet behaves itself.
keep it locked!
It's up
https://soundcloud.com/meatbreak/baphometicgoatworship
Indeed
I liked the preacher at the beginning and the express train to hell bits.
the preacher at the beginning
is Aleister Crowley. The Great Beast himself
sidrrrs, I'll decide the tracklisting, burn that bad boy to disc and wack it in el postybox
The artwork is about 6% better than the actual music.
Shucks
Your mix is done, will be in the post in the next couple of days.
I've had to send my laptop away to be fixed and made the mistake of not burning the CD before it left.
lightcyclerider - You'll be getting your mix in a few weeks.
^Ignore this
I made another one with the help of my girlfriend's laptop and the backup hard drive I've got full of music.
On its way next week...
And now posted!
sidrrrs yours went in the post TODAY at work
so you should get it in the next bit of time this week or something. I hope you enjoy what is a weird mix that I struggled slightly to do and it's mostly satanic - but no Slayer, despite me liking them.
Thanks imho - arrived this morning.
I'll feedback once I've had chance to listen.
no worries
I tried to keep it fairly varied, I hope there's something on there you like.
I already knew Saul Williams, so that was good.
I think the last two tracks were probably my favourites though - I especially like Black Angels in Exarchia.
Cool - glad you found something you like
My first pass was probably more modern classical/ambient heavy so perhaps unfortunate that i stripped it out a bit to cover more bases, but yeah benzinho's stuff is lovely, particularly roses of time, and that version of death of proclomation is my favourite bit of phosphorescent alongside the track wolves.
basil and dusty_nothing
I sent yours out this afternoon. Sorry it's so late in the month - I hope you guys enjoy them!
have you got ideas for April's theme?
I'm ready to go!
My mind is blank, but there were good suggestions in February's thread.
I haven't really thought about it!
I think death would be a good theme.
To copy & paste some suggestions from February's thread:
monsters and myth, warfare, science (non space), covers, remixes, body parts, dates/numbers, colours, history, geography/locations, inanimate objects, birth/death, darkness/light, food & drink, non english song names, 7 sins and 7 virtues, travel, the teenage years, drugs and drink, heaven/hell(religion), boy/girl, love/hate, numbers, animals, elements
Remixes, Metal, Side Projects/Soloists from bands, Shapes, Sweary, Body Parts, Hair...
I like
The Teenage Years
Body Parts
Numbers
and I still think there's demand for a Porn mix. Always sex and violence.
OK, body parts it is!
Thanks Brainfeedr
Received just before Easter but my laptop is away being repaired so had to wait until I was back in work to say thanks. Amazing couple of discs that's going to put mine to shame. The detail you have gone to is incredible. Where did you find all tracks for the Folk/Gospel cd? Thanks for putting all the notes by the tracks too, genuinely very interesting.
Thanks man!
A lot of the folk ones came from the Columbia sound archive series, then the gospel ones were drawn from Tompkins Square reissues from the last couple of years and Alan Lomax recordings which I think have all been rereleased recently as a digital archive type thing.
Anyway, I'm really glad you liked them - personally I think this month's was the most fun to put together.
Cheers old bean,
Dropped yours in the redbox on my way to work today... Sorry it's late - feeling the extra pressure of doing a mix for the Mixtape Head Honcho.
I'm running a bit behind this month.
rich-t : your religion compilation is in process and will be with you in about a week.
f.a.o. GoatmeatMF
Really sorry I haven't got my mix out yet. I was hoping to get it finished over the Easter weekend but my laptop died on me. Hopefully picking it up tonight/tomorrow so will get back on it asap.
thanks Dusty
my pc dies on me last week too - it's making a horrible high-pitched grinding noise, sounds like something physical is broken inside it. weird, and annoying. So I feel your pain. No worries. I look forward to it when you can get to it.
Still not got my laptop back I'm afriad
I won't forget though so will get it done as soon as it's returned. I had the majority of the tracklisting done so won't take too long.
Thanks Basil!
received it this morning. I really like the note but I'm a bit sad you didn't include the anecdote about what happened in a church in '95. Anyway, thoughts about the music:
- Laura Cantrell might be a little too straight-up country for me but I can't deny that the acoustic guitar licks are awesome.
- The Flatmates song was great - jangly guitars and stuff so you can't go far wrong. Reminded me of my ex-girlfriend and made me a bit sad though so thanks a lot for that.
- The Mississippi John Hurt and Blind Willie Johnson songs are really pretty - I've been on a folk/gospel binge lately and they fit right in.
- The Def Jek song is funky as shit. God really did make him funky. Bit long though maybe.
- The 12twelve song is awesome - I always forget that I like jazz. Especially when it's all cosmic and shit. And short. I think jazz artists tend to just go on a bit.
- I was tossing up whether or not to buy a Fields of the Nephilim album in Oxfam the other day 'cause I've never heard them and I've got to be honest with you I'm now kind of glad I didn't.
- The Mormon Rap is absolutely fucking incredible - where did you find it?!
- I was tossing up whether or not to buy a Low album in my local record store the other day 'cause I've never heard them and I've got to be honest with you I'm now kind of sad I didn't.
- The Kitty Wells song is super pretty as well. I seem to either really like or really hate country songs with no sort of discernible criteria for which it'll be for any given song.
- This Pusha T song is HORRIBLE! The bass is so invasive and Kanye's singing is woeful and Pusha T sounds like a berk. When did this come out?! I quite like Kanye West normally. Bleurgh!
Thanks again, I really enjoyed the vast majority of this stuff. Good mix o' stuff too!
prob500
I'm very much behind on my religion mix. It may be a couple of weeks still! I'll chuck in a bonus disc to make up for the delay.
brainfeedr - Count me in for April !
guys, are we doing an April one?
Pale-eyedBadger...
your religion mix will be in the post monday morning, aplogies for the slight delay.
rich-t, your disc will finally be in the post tomorrow.
i hope it ding-a-ding-dangs your dang-a-long-ling-long
