Favourite LOW album
We put up an interview with Alan Sparhawk today http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4146122-real-men-don’t-play-the-piano-dis-meets-alan-sparhawk-from-low and it kinda blew me away to realise that The Invisible Way is their 10th album. I mean, I knew they had quite a few, but it surprised me they had quite so many.
My favourite is probably Trust - but then it was also my first Low album. I feel like there may be one or two that haven't given enough time to, else this would have been a put Low's albums > in > order > kinda > thread. Feel free to do that if you so wish.

without meaning to be 'that guy', i've given most play time to 'A Lifetime of Contemporary Relief'
as three of my favourite songs of theirs never ended up on an album:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCiC8jvgvpY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPFDix37UZw
and Those Girls.
it also has some great covers.
i think Trust is my favourite too, but Things We Lost In The Fire runs it close. i'm gonna go for it:
Trust > Things We Lost In The Fire > Great Destroyer > Xmas > I Could Live In Hope > Secret Name > Drums & Guns > Curtain Hits The Cast > Long Division > C'Mon > Invisible Way
the journey cover is hilarious..
..he is literally laughing his way through it. so good.
Curtain Hits The Cast 8th
...
probably
Things We Lost In the Fire > Trust > I Could Live in Hope > Great Destroyer > Long Division > Drums and Guns > Secret Name > The Curtain Hits the Cast > C'mon > The Invisible Way
always thought secret name was better than it was. its more of an album with an interesting ambience like drums & guns, but secret names has a few too many duff songs.
also
weird interview question about playing the christmas album, was it meant to be a pisstake question? last time they played it through in london, they got pretty nastily heckled and it seemed to really upset them.
Ah, that was
a question a DiS-er asked me to ask - I know they've done Christmas-themed shows before where they've played a lot of the songs from the Christmas album, but have they ever played the album through from start to finish, Don't Look Back-style?
it'd be a short gig wouldn't it?
yes
and it didnt go down too well!
Curtain Hits The Cast
was my first so maybe that. I think that is gonna be a common thing on this thread; your first encounter with Low does stick with you. Other than that, C'mon and Trust are great. I should also say that any album that doesn't have their "Down By The River" is missing something.
I Could Live In Hope and Things We Lost In The Fire have taken up the most of my time.
But, I won't bother to rate their albums. There's nothing wrong with doing so, it's just...
With Low, for me, they're a band that doesn't make records that are bad, just albums that aren't QUITE as good as the rest. They are possibly the only band that has ever benefited from staying, more or less, in the same place for their entire career. Things have changed up a bit, but the recipe is still the same. And that is perfect.
totally agree.
At the moment it is I Could Live in Hope
Because I've recently got the lovely vinyl reissue. It's a bit of a cliche but I could almost say the one I'm listening to at the time is my favourite. They really are one of the most consistent bands ever, all of their albums have lots to offer.
At a push, Things We Lost in The Fire probably just edges it, but I also really love the hush and sparseness of the early records and the dark intensity of Drums and Guns.
It's not worth ranking the albums because there is so little between them.
Things We've Lost In Fire.
It's just a sublime album.
have only heard C'mon
first and last tracks are the best but fuck me they are incredible. defo a band i need to listen to more.
especially if that's the only album you've heard!
you'll be blow away by some of their other stuff
i first fell in love with them when Great Destroyer came out, saw them for the first time in London at that venue that no longer exists (can't remember the name, near Smithfield I think, would have been about 2005 or 06 i think?). Sort out all their stuff after that, Things We Lost in the Fire and Trust being personal favourites. But for 'that moment in time' thing, Great Destroyer remains a big favourite with me!
Curtain hits the cast
Mostly because of THAT chord in Laugh which I think is maybe the greater sound ever recorded; not sure if anyone else will get what I'm talking about but nevermind.
Drums & Guns
It was the first Low record I heard and it blew me away. The percussion and mixing are top class.
Things We Lost In The Fire for me
It was, like so many others in this thread, my first Low album. It blew me away on the first listen and still continues to do so now.
I Could Live In Hope runs it close in second, but it really is hard for me to rank their albums.
I know everyone here's not really that into C'mon
But it's the first Low album I ever heard and got me into the back catalogue, so maybe I'm a bit biased towards it but I think as a stand alone album it still sounds amazing!
I thought it was excellent, personally.
But, that's just me.
It's really not just you
I love C'Mon
it's a good standalone album
and a really good starter. but i find, familiar with their back catalogue, its not something i ever want to put on - it's not a solid listen all the way through like trust or great destroyer - and too many of the songs on there are kinda paler photocopies of previous, much better tracks.
Surprised this thread didn't get more replies
Bumping it because we've just put up a special session http://drownedinsound.com/news/4146207-watch--low-in-session-for-dis-20-minute-interview
Curtain Hits The Cast is best
then Secret Name, Trust, Things We Lost in the Fire, Long Division..and then the others.
I like The Great Destroyer,
Trust
start to finish, pure brilliance. it's been a go-to record of mine for more than a decade.
for me...
'the curtain hits the cast' is my favourite. but 'in tne drugs' from 'trust' is the song that made me sit up and really take notice. have very fond/clear memories of john peel playing it and then listening to it on repeat on a listening post in record collector, Sheffield...
Curtain Hits the Cast, Trust and The Great Destroyer are my personal faves.
Things We Lost In The Fire
forever and ever and ever
Trust is my favourite, but wasn't my first Low album.
Lots of love for most of their back catalogue, but haven't clicked with the last two records. They seem to have lost a certain tension. It is all a little bit comfortable.
probably between Trust and Things We Lost In The Fire
But like someone up there said, I don't think they've done a bad album. C'mon is probably my least favourite but by any other band's standards it's still a really good album
Have to agree with Things We Lost In The Fire, it's their classic
Easily one of the most consistent bands of our time. Everything they've done is 7-9/10...
Secret Name, Curtain Hits The Cast are magnificent IMO. Their collab with Dirty Three was also excellent - For me I guess they peaked in the late 90's, early 00's.
Great Destroyer is my least favourite, but still a fine album.
...
best ones:
Curtain Hits The Cast, Drums and Guns, Long Division, Things We Lost In The Fire.
great but not quite as great: Trust, I Could Live In Hope, Secret Name.
not good: C'mon, The Great Destroyer.
not heard the new one.
would also rank Songs For a Dead Pilot and the Murderer EP up with the best.
