Villagers are the Owl City of Bright Eyes
he's even called Conor O-something-fer-fucks-sake
If you liked Mumford & Sons, you'll LOVE...
...you know this'd to be true.
Bright Eyes (like the Postal Service) are broadly totally unlistenable, but occasionally genuinely great. Whereas Villagers are mostly good, but rarely better than very good. imo. (Adverbs!)
you're right about Bright Eyes though
Do people who enjoy those bands just block out the lyrics or what?
But I genuinely think Conor Oberst is a great lyricist
But personally I find even the newer stuff pretty squirmy. The Postal Service however are off the scale.
and the other copying the first's voice, hairstyle and image
it's like the room of knackered clones in alien resurrection
It's pretty quavery. It's slightly similar.
He's still brilliant though <3
when you are Irish. What the heck are the odds of that happening!
got a nice voice, though.
because Conors output quality has steadily declined to the point where I'd argue Villagers is the better act at this present moment in time. I dont LOVE Villagers but they're decent and have a few songs I really enjoy where as Conor hasn't put out anything I've liked since Casawhatever it was called
did you like that?
and I haven't liked anything he's done since Digital Ash / I'm Wide Awake. So yeah, Villagers are probably better at this moment in time.
When they release something anywhere near as good as Fevers & Mirrors or I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, I'd be more ready to have the debate about who's better overall.
A bigger Fevers and Mirrors era Bright Eyes rip off you could not find from the voice, down to the lyrics and song titles. People were wondering if it was a Conor Oberst side project.
I'm listening to their first album now (for first time) http://open.spotify.com/album/5N9xgB73MxJQqU3ds5FMKb
it truly is shameless, check out song titles such as ''Like a Locket, Like A Necklace, Like a Bracelet'' and ''Did You, Did You, Did You''.
Shame is it's actually pretty competent but it's crosses the line from influence to plagerism so so blatently you can't really take it seriously.
On track 4 now - god this is just amazing how much he has copied a fairly idiosyncratic style.
I don't remember them ever being discussed in any other context either.
I had forgotten just how astonishing a rip-off it is.
But I can't stand Conor Oberst
and I mean on the bad side. like, a few songs he's done are even listenable.
or never get into at all
You could put together a very decent playlist of his material, I'm sure ;I like "The Calendar Hung Itself"). But you'd have to ignore what he's singing.
so they stopped doing it and now you're moaning again
let's get you back to the social board
"oh I'm so sensitive & damaged, indie cred blah blah old "new-dylan", eight bands going at once. I'd rather listen to DES O-Conor.
why don't they include THAT sentence?
you're not 14 any more guys, you're allowed to admit you can't stand them now
...I think you all just got brusma'd.
