Anyone going to the Kraftwerk shows at the Tate Modern?
Thanks to my brilliant girlfriend, we're going to the 'Man Machine' night on Saturday. Just got an email saying that all shows will last approximately two hours, so we should get the whole album and a good sized 'best of' set as well.
I'm *very* excited for this!

Mega jealous
although at £60 a pop or whatever these were at the time, still don't think I can justify spending that much to see Kraftwerk. Man Machine would clearly be the best show though. Although apparently they're playing the other "hits" (trans europe express, tour de france) in the encores of these shows before.
Tickets for the Man Machine night are going for an average £600 - £700+ a pair on ebay.
That's not even a silly 'buy it now' price, that's just in regular open bidding. Crazy.
I'm really hoping they play the full 20 minute of 'Autobahn' in the encore - it's probably my favourite individual Kraftwerk track.
I wouldn't do it because I'm not a complete scumbag (and don't have tickets)
but I'd totally give up a pair of tickets in exchange for £700 cash.
I was having this discussion with the other half last night
I probably wouldn't do it, but at £600 or whatever, I'd very seriously be considering giving the ticket up. Kraftwerk or not, there's no way I could ignore making £540.00.
I'm going on Thursday for Radioactivity
Very excited I must say.
I too...
...am going on Thursday. Will be the third time I've seen them, and probably the most excited I've been about it.
saw them at bestival
they were ok
Trans Europe on Friday for me
The setlists from when they did the gigs in Dusseldorf last week are pretty amazing

Anyone have any ideas on timings?
The confirm says to arrive early in order to collect your wristbands and 3D glasses (!). Given that I spent two hours queuing in The Turbine Hall to buy tickets, it might be wise to leave plenty of time before showtime...
I got an e mail today
Tate Modern will open at 19.00 (21.00 on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 February) for the concerts. Admission will be via the river entrance (north side of building) of Tate Modern. The Turbine Hall will be open from 19.30 (21.30 on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 February).
I have the same email...
...it also lists the show as 21:00 - sounds like a stagetime to me if they are doing two hours.
Thursday for me, Radioactivity.
*cough* The Mix *cough*
What's the point?
Surely they'll just play the same set as the greatest hits encore...
I think I'd have to say, the best of Kraftwerk
the point is that it's the only one I could make, alas... I'm sure it'll still be great, the setlist from Dusseldorf is hardly hateful

I'm just messing :D
When I was in the queue for tickets, different nights were selling out in front of me and I would have happily taken anything, even Techno Pop.
From memory, I think they sold out...
Trans Europe Express
The Man Machine
Computer World
The Mix
Autobahn
at which point I got tickets for Radioactivity - which is what I wanted in the first place :)
I donno, it still looks like a good setlist to me:

I had tickets to Dusseldorf
but the flights got cancelled due to shitting snow :'(
I'd almost forgotten about this and the whole shitting ticket debacle
*enters dark and sullen mood*
Saw them setting up the stage yesterday
I was in the Tate gift shop watching it through the window. Stage is set up under the mezzanine area in the Turbine Hall, facing out and up the slope. So, you'll have a Brixton Academy sloped floor vibe going on but in much better surroundings. Enjoy!
Thanks!
I saw Throbbing Gristle at the Tate a few years back and it was the same set up in the Turbine Hall. It works well. The ounly slight downside is that because the ceiling of the hall is so high, some of the sound gets lost slightly, but it wasn't a major issue.
Anyone go to Autobahn last night?
If so, thoughts?
The Guardian gave it 5 stars.
There's a few very minor spoilers in the article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/feb/07/kraftwerk-review
Spoilers for a gig?
Well I never. Sounds good - will report back with stage times, queue times and the like tomorrow...
The stage time is on the ticket
21:00 for weeknights, 22:30 for Fri + Sat. Queuing advice would be helpful though!
Oh, I'm sure they will be on stage at the very stroke of nine...
...with teutonic efficiency. I am not so sure of the teutonic efficiency of the Tate Modern staff to get everyone through the door by that time however. Fingers crossed.
Indeed they were
On at 9pm on the dot, off at 11pm to the very second.
There were no queues to speak of and you could walk right up the front - tons of space all the way. And damn they were an absolute treat. The 3D visuals are jaw-dropping.
was it surround sound ?
I can't fecking wait for tonight.
Cheers buddy...
In the video on that page
Alexis Petridis looks like someone's overweight dad, which I hadn't gathered from his profile picture.
Hmm, sore head today
Sooo, last night was fairly brilliant. As d_e said above, on at the stroke of 9pm and off again at 11pm. Although last night was the Radioactivity night, it was much more of a greatest hits show throughout - they came on to We Are The Robots, played 30 mins of Radioactivity, and then greatest hits for the next 80 minutes.
Queue for wristbands was about 10 minutes at 8pm. Bar was pretty easy to get served at - I'm not suggesting anything, but there were no bag searches.
3D graphics were fun, although a bit gimmicky after awhile (as all 3D is). Ditched the glasses for the second half of the show. Made it a nightmare to get through the crowd as well as no one was looking at head level.
The sloping floor of the Turbine Hall meant that the view was good from everywhere. Felt surprisingly intimate. Surround sound was pretty good - we shifted forward to be just in front of the sound desk, which seemed to be the best spot.
Overall, neun von zehn.
Out of interest, what merch did they have?
Were they selling the albums on vinyl?
Generic tshirts for £25 a pop
CD box set, no vinyl.
And tote bags
Don't forget the tote bags...
there are also posters for
10 pound
Don't see the appeal, it's all a bit Meltdown festival
There was a good piece in the Quietus from one of the original line-up saying they were rubbish nowadays (complete impartial and not bitter, obviously).
It's all a bit Meltdown festival
What does that even mean?!
Massively overpriced events for the chattering classes to touch the hem of long past their best husks
But enough about ATP...
Last night was mesmerising
Didn't get the pillow throwing - bet ralf wasn't too chuffed with it!. But no it was amazing, truly worth the 60 pounds paid. tempted to queue up next week for the tour de france show. A guy in front of me paid 600!
(JAG) a small review of the show (in 140 characters or less) is on my twitter: @ShortestStraws
Yep
Friday was amazing. I'm not going mad in thinking that they didn't actually play all the album, am I?
The cushion throwing was weird, I guess that's a result of having a gig at 10:30 on a Friday night when people have had a few.
Thanks to whoever pointed out that the Tate don't search bags. I sneakily took some wine in, which was even more pleasing when I saw the bar was charging £5 for a small can of beer.
That^ was me
My work here is done...
Went to the Man Machine night on Saturday.
It was absolutely incredible. Everything about it was perfect: the venue, the sound, the visuals, the strangewly captivating stage presence (given that they don't actually do anything).
They played pretty everything I wanted hear too. I think Neon Lights was my favourite track of the night, but The Robots was definitely the best music/visuals combo (followed closely by Tour de France).
We watched it standing next to Chris & Cosey of Throbbing Gristle, which was quite the treat for me personally. Brian Cox tweeted saying he was there but we didn't see him.
The *only* thing that irked me ever so slightly was the band member who stands middle right. He was about 6 inches shorter than everyone else in the band, and ever so slightly ruined the uniformity of the band's image when they stand next to each other on stage. Also, at one point he leaned over to briefly speak to the other guy in the middle. But if this is all I can 'criticise', then I think we're doing alright!
Top 5 gig of all time for me, easily. There was no pillow throwing though.
Don’t suppose that Chris and Cosey or Brian Cox had to spend 5 hours on the phone for tickets…
Sounds awesome though.
ALso
a couple of friends got returns on Saturday night so if people are thinking of going one night this week, they should!
What was the process?
Did they just get there early in the day and wait?
Yeah they got there an hour or so before doors
The only snag is you have to queue outside.
Tempted...
Dispatch from the returns queue
from my mate...
1st night: Turned up at 6pm, five people in front of me. Got in. Queue was friendly.
3rd night: Turned up at 5.15pm, 10 people in front of me. Got in. Queue was sociable.
Tonight: Turned up at 4.45pm, 20 people in front of me. Got in. Much anxiety about queue jumping.
Looks like the word is out. Anyway, he's going on the final night. No queueing for the last show because he bought a ticket from Viagogo for £380 before I suggested that he should try queueing for returns.
I walk past the Tate on my way home
The queue was much bigger tonight when I walked by at 6.30pm. Maybe it's because it wasn't snowing/raining or because of the album they were performing?
Was tempted to go again tomorrow night but having read about the audience at the last couple of them (there was a stage invasion last night apparently) I'm not so sure now.
Stage Invasion?!?
I was there on Friday night and I had a group of beered up lads standing next to me. They were "dancing" with their bobbing heads on my peripheral vision spoiling the view of the stage. I stealthily encroached on their area and pushed them behind me.
Also didn't understand the cushion throwing. Thank goodness my glasses protected me from cushion-corner-in-eye trauma. I expected better standards and calibre. You'd never get this at The Barbican or The Southbank.
Christ, I act so old.....
I guess it's typical of London audiences
to do this sort of thing.
I went to see Radioactivity last week, and we had the misfortune to stand next to some guy who decided to give a running commentary of *every* track to his girlfriend.
I miss the Luminaire and its no chatting sign...
Kraftwerk
playing T in the Park
Went last night.
For the unfairly maligned Electric Cafe, or 'Techno Pop' as they've rechristened it. Would have loved to have seen Man Machine, Computer World or The Mix, but this was brilliant and served as a timely reminder that they definitely were not rubbish in 1986. The 3D show was incredible as expected and the setlist was spot-on. I'd give a hell of a lot to see them again and hope that this won't be the last time. I saw them in 2004 at Brixton and that was incredible too, probably even better. I was sad that we will never see Florian Scneider again as his presence and cheekiness made that particular gig all the more special. But then that one didn't have 3D films, 'Sex Object' or (although my mate argues otherwise) 'Computer Love'.
