I assumed there wasn't support because it's a warm up show.
Has anyone here taken a Chiltern train to London from the Midlands in the last week? Is it actually going to get there ok?

Haven't managed to see them since they started playing shows again a few years ago so am looking forward to it immensely. Even bought some earplugs, though I'm willing to bet their loudness has been overstated/exaggerated anyway...

Will just assume he was being saracastic until I actually hear this album, I've been let down too many times before.
Does not measure time in the same way as us mortals do. Think of it more as a metaphor, like the seven days of creation in the Bible are a metaphor for billions of years (if you believe the more liberal wing of Christianity).
So basically what I'm saying is that the album could be out soon, if we're measuring in geological time.
how were the new songs / what was terrible about it
but the sound was absolutely shocking. And I don't just mean it was too loud (I think the actual volume was ok in fact) but that the levels were completely wrong for everything. First up the vocals were inaudible for every song apart from the occasional note that would jump out. The bass was so muffled that you couldn't hear anything. That amazing bass line in Only Shallow was just a big mush and it ruined the song. Some of Kevin's guitar settings were far too loud (and even some too quiet!!) in relation to the other sounds and instruments. The snare drum was far too loud in relation to the rest of the kit. A few of the fills the drummer did were out of time and because the snare was so loud it really accentuated them. I'm pretty sure they did at least two songs with members playing in a different key, or at least with the guitar not in the same key as the keyboard. It was so confused that I think they played Loomer twice in a row. If it even was Loomer.
On top of this, maybe because they were also experiencing sound issues on stage, they didn't play very well. Maybe they are usually a little lacklustre and the sound did them no favours. I don't know.
All I can say though is that gig bordered on being an ask for a refund situation.
and such a masterpiece of production. A bit baffling that someone that is apparently so meticulous about sound could allow that to happen. Though maybe it wasn't the band's fault at all, I have no idea.
Sounds like an off night, because the sound was flawless when I saw them a few years ago
I'd love to give them another go somewhere else, but I can't see myself spending nearly £30 on a ticket to see them again. Hopefully will catch them at a festival some time and the sound will be better and if it isn't I can wander off and watch something else.
I would never bank on festival sound for them being better than tonight. I can attest that the sound was way the hell worse than other times I have seen them - but the vocals are always low in the mix, Shields' guitar lines often burst, and generally, as you suggest, there is daylight between the meticulous studio production and the sound of their live shows. That's why I prefer their live numbers that are just brutal.

Absolutely no point for them to have attempted vocals tonight. Couldn't hear a word despite repeated calls from the crowd. Kevin became increasingly frustrated and seemed to give up. No encore, and the house music was on very quickly after they walked off stage.
Overall, it felt like I've just watched some MBV songs played as instrumentals.
a phenomenal set. The Roundhouse gigs were ok. Last night was average for me. The only upside tonight was being stood next to J Mascis for a couple of songs. I was too shy to say hello to him, I didn't want to piss him off. Anyway, I'd give that gig 6/10. I hope Hammersmith is better.
I talked to him about guitars for a minute or two back in September. He's by no means a CHATTY guy, but he's very nice.
Granted, Murph and Barlow are much chattier (Murph is NICE AS FUCK), but you can't go wrong chatting up J.
might be two or three days, in response to a shout from the crowd. few new songs. we couldn't decided how many. they played for just over an hour. we were on left side, sound was quieter than previous gigs.
I enjoyed it, but fuck me it sounded a mess at points. As Kevin described 'like playing down a three mile wind tunnel'. The sound around me (centre stage about ten metres back) was pretty awful. It only sounded alright when they restarted To Here Knows When. The new song sounded really decent though. I liked it a lot.
Gonna get tickets to the Hammersmith shows, hoping it was a dodgy night.

There was definitely something off with the mixing, the bass being extremely muddy and inaudible vocals being my main problems. Yeah, Kevin just seemed increasingly irritated, even stopping a song midway through to restart (To Here Knows When, I think).
I only counted 1 new song! The first one they played. They played 4 off YMMR which was nice.
NEW ALBUM NEXT WEEK THOUGH! I have faith.
tonight was really average. sound for the first six or so songs was really bad, it did get better, but then seemed to get worse again for Soon, Feed Me With Your Kiss and You Made Me Realise. new songs (I counted three) seemed ok, but I think that the venue's PA wasn't up to it and the band's own equipment was failing a bit. After the first (new?) song, someone shouted out 'when's the new album out' to which Kevin replied 'erm, two or three days, i think...'. we shall wait and see. hammersmith will be better than this, but tonight was not the gig that both band or audience wanted....
Sound was a bit ropey but the whole thing was still quite mesmerising. Lovely stuff. Maybe my ER20s saved the day, dunno.
Sound was fucking atrocious as detailed above, but still loved the moments where they got their ferocity on - Feed Me..., Slow, You Never Should, YMMR. Sad we lost the bass for Soon, and Kevin's vocals pretty much throughout. Still glad I went, if only cos I couldn't wait two more months.
Oh, and for all the nubes above, there was just *one* new number, the opener, which sounded to me like a St Etienne tune being given a good fisting.

Was obviously super excited having only swiped a ticket on Friday night, but the sound was as poor as everyone above suggested. Even before they came on, the songs being played by the DJ sounded like they were coming from a car stereo parked outside The Windmill.
That said, still enjoyed it in patches. It's a warm-up gig after all, so hopefully they should have the creases ironed out for Hammersmith.
Enjoyed the ticketing/queue system - give chap with clipboard a name, seemingly any name, and he'll draw on your hand with a marker pen and you can go in.
Also, I too was stood on the left raised bit by the bar and didn't see dan_thw :(
sound. It would be hard for the sound to be any worse last night. Even though it was a warm up I don't think that's much of an excuse. I went to their first ICA gig in 2008 which was billed as a rehearsal gig. That was one of the best gigs that I've been to. Perfect sound, perfect set.
I enjoyed the experience of it, especially the anticipation to seeing them for the first time. I can't really describe what I felt, as it was never going to live up to what I wanted it to be, so any disappointed seems predictable. All I really know is that it made me really hope that HEALTH come back this year.
Than the one time I've seen them before (Manchester in 08). But that wasn't particularly good either. They always seem to have problems with the vocals being too low, unless it's deliberate. Seems like it wouldn't be too hard to fix, surely - just push the vocal channels up by a few decibels and it would make a difference. Or is it harder than that?
They fucked up the new tune, were barely in time for the other tunes, the drum fills kept missing their mark, Shields was visibly annoyed and couldn't play in time - I think he was mostly to blame for the mess, we were down the front for the holocaust bit and some of his pedals actually cut his signal completely. For a supposed sound perfectionist it was embarrassing to watch.

You could actually hear them cut in briefly, so something was clearly wrong, it wasn't meant to sound like that.
All the reformed gigs I've seen (Roundhouse / 2 shows at ATP / Brixton) have sounded like this.....and I love it.....
For a band that has so many imitators - nobody can produce an artrock noise assault like this (not HEALTH either - even though I love them to bits - far more clinical compared to this - MBV are off the scale). Even though the set changes (I think) very little - it is always an experience to see this band. Near the front on the left this was as LOUD as I have ever heard the band, my beer can was literally rattling with the force of the sounds from the speakers.
I've seen them a bunch of times since they reformed and I don't think I've been able to hear the vocals once!
Also the guy up there grumbling there wasn't an encore...

I was stood next to dan_thw. Seen them several times, have a bunch of bootlegs, & although sound wasn't great, I wouldn't say it was totally atrocious. The songs do tend to get lost in the noise a bit live, but I'm OK with that. New song was rubbish though, MBV by numbers with no outstanding qualities. Sounded pretty weedy compared to the rest of the set too. Set didn't seem that loud, only resorted to the ER20's during the (not very extended) "You Made Me Realise". Same thing when I saw them at Barrowlands on the 1st time round reunion though. Would say that was a better gig overall.

But this is precisely why I give my favourite shoegaze bands a miss live, as it seems so much of their sound is dependent upon how the records are produced. I remember seeing Curve / Swervedriver together - Curve blew it (and I never thought of them the same way) whilst Swervedriver absolutely nailed it. I still wish (on balance) I hadn't gone.
but it was a warm up show so you expect mistakes. That venue was atrocious. Also I think something was up with kevins rig, he was going deathly quiet at various points (normally in the verses).
Anyone who's worried about the Hammersmith shows shouldn't be though, they'll sort it out by then and it'll be great!
I'd never seen them before. I went in expecting a swirling cacophony of hellnoise, and that's precisely what I got. Ace show. If that was them on an off day, I'd love to see them do a 'proper' headline show.
I did actually enjoy the show.
i was kinda overwhelmed by the fact i actually saw mbv. sound problems didnt seem that noticable to me apart from lack of vocals which im sure will be cleared up in better venues by march. really enjoyed the support. think it worked best on the heavier songs. feed me with your kiss as excellent. no complaints
doesn't fill me with hope that a new LP is imminent.
so far. Kevin might not want to give away tracknames until the record is actually out.

But I still enjoyed it. Sound was ropey (I was standing pretty central so I imagine it was even worse to the sides) and they were definitely out of time for parts of it, but they still delivered the ear-sundering squalls of noise I hoped for, so wasn't overly fussed.
I loved it. Real choppy, pulled back feel to it.
On first listen it was at least pretty good.
The vocals were quieter than normal, but they're normally quiet anyway.

I've seen them 3 times before and while this was definitely the ropiest in terms of sound quality, it was special to see them in a small-ish venue and in more intimate and raw surroundings.
