FIDLAR - Self Titled
A few advance copies got shipped out to a few of the independents ahead of their forthcoming tour, so I've had this for a couple of weeks now.
Press release
Listening to them, you can tell that the band did their homework on punk rock. Any given song could include a Germs influenced guitar solo, the catchy "Ooo's" and "Ah's" of The Misfits and lyrics in the same family as Black Flag's "Six Pack" and "TV Party".
On the same token they can just as easily be compared to any of the bands they cover at their ever more legendary and frenetic live shows (Blink 182, FEAR, CCR, Warron Zevon), yet it all comes across entirely their own: surfier, faster, more fuzzed out, more personal and a lot more drunk.

Rhye - Woman
Okay, after several listens I have to give this 8/10. Misses out on 9 because of the weak last track. That aside, the quality is remarkably consistent across the album. Smooth as hell laid back pop music. The vocalist in particular has a real grasp of mood, but every song is meticulously built. Comparable to the funkier Blue Nile songs, but with a husky female vocal.
-
FaltyDL - Hardcourage
Maybe the best full-length release from Drew Lustman yet? Largely quite subdued, as I keep saying it sounds a fair bit like Floating Points, which is no bad thing. Really enjoyable listen start to end, which is often difficult for electronic artists who kill it so regularly on 12"s like FaltyDL does.

Great guitar-y pop, with wonderful female vocals (inc. some harmonies) and crunchy guitars. The Joy Formidable meets Ringo Deathstarr, mayve. For older references, there's a bit of Breeders, bit of Lush, maybe.

Did a naughty on this for my cycle to work - it's really bloody lovely, the 2 tracks released are the standouts so far, but that's only because they're the most familiar. If you didn't like them then you probably won't like the rest of the album as it's pretty similar.

L. Pierre- The Island Come True
The 4th album from this project of Aidan Moffat, who I'm sure most of you will be familiar with. It's just beautiful. It's entirely comprised of samples that he's found from 100 different old vinyls, field recordings and other seemingly distant entities. It accumulates to one magnificent sonic journey and it's ultimately up to the listener to shape the narrative. Here's a review of the album I did: http://therivieraworld.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/l-pierre-island-come-true.html There's links and stuff there too.
-
Biffy Clyro- Opposites
Puzzle was the last Biffy album that I really enjoyed. Only Revolutions seemed a bit pompous to me and wasn't really what I wnted to be listening to, which sounds ridiculous because ultimately Opposites is the same bombastic approach towards radio friendly rock that Only... was, and on an even larger scale. But it's one of the most epic compendiums of rock music I've heard ina long while. Again, review and links: http://therivieraworld.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/biffy-clyro-opposites.html

Widowspeak - Almanac
So, this is the first exposure I've had to the band following their inclusion in the EOTR 2013 line up. Reviews and fans are saying this is a more jolly affair than their debut (and then say it's either better or worse for it) but I reckon it's awesome. The guitars are high up in the mix and really make the music soar, sounds almost like a forgotten 1970s prog rock record right down to the rustic cheese of the album cover. Full of brilliant riffs and dreamy female vocals. Definitely rockin'.... but with a spliff in it's mouth and pupils like the moon.

Initially feels poppier than the others, but the ideas are subtler and the songs better. They've learned when to stop and not to clutter decent tunes up with unnecessary extras. Inhaler's a grand single, too.

Broadcast - Berberian Sound Studio OST
Been out a while now (and the film it's soundtracking must be at least half a year old) but I think this deserves listing here anyway.
Obvs. not a 'proper' album, nor - predictably - as sublime as their 'proper' stuff, but it's still one of the better things I've heard this winter... a weird brambly curio, a collage of soundbites and sketches that'll cling to you for many a bleak evening to come. In a similar vein to their Focus Group collab., and the natural conclusion to the path they began treading when they started referencing Valerie and Her Week of Wonders one decade ago. Essential listening for Ghost Box & Finders Keepers nuts, but you knew that anyway.

It might be brief for an electronic album (around 45mins)
but it has all the euphoria of heyday Orbital and warm thrub of early Warp. Fantastic - becoming quite addicted to it (and prefer to the sprawl of the debut)...

nice prog. feel to a couple of the songs
interesting that they started the band in the first place as a reaction against that kind of sound.

-
Matmos - The Marriage of True Minds
No idea how to describe this. The results of a group of test subjects trying to recreate the sounds that the band were (apparently) trying to telepathically transmit to them. It's noisy in places, glitchy in others and overall a really original and fun album.
-
Olafur Arnalds - For Now I Am Winter
3rd Full length (I think?) from Olafur. Introduces vocals to his work, which I was a bit funny about initially, but I think it works. Some really beautiful stuff as ever. Very soothing, dark, wintery (no shit).
-
Ed Harcourt - Back into the Woods
would be stupid if this wasn't recommended. I've only just got into him through his debut, which to my ears is a fucking treasure of an album. This is looking like it may be just as good, albeit more stripped back and matured. LOVELY.

I know!
I read the Pitchfork review and had to check as I thought I had been trolled. Can see it now, it's a nice voice either way. I think this would make a good thread.

Colt Silvers - Red Panda
continuing my love of electro (slightly) stompy indy pop - if you liked Citizens' album last year or bands like Mother Mother, you might like that one. 14 tracks on the album and no filler.
-
Anais Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer - Child Ballads
On which Anais (and Jefferson) try their hand at some English/Scottish folk which go back half a millenia in some cases.
I find it hard to believe I could ever dislike a record with Anais' voice on it. And she dovetails nicely with Jefferson.
It's a shorter record than her previous albums. Only 7 tracks, which is about right given the theme/lyrics here.
Her run of excellence continues.

William Tyler - Impossible Truth
New album of shimmering, predominantly acoustic instrumentals from Nashville guitar prodigy, I recommended his previous album in an obscure albums thread recently, hopefully this will garner him more attention as its sounding bloody wonderful after a few listens. Its based around his jaw-droppingly melodic guitar playing but as with the previous record its coloured with judicious splashes of bass, keyboards and brass etc. For fans of Jack Rose, Six Organs of Admittance and the like

It's a funny thing about that record, literally every person I've recommended it to has loved it. Without fail. He also released a fantastic record prior to it called Deseret Canyon under the name 'The Paper Hats' rather than his own although this may be a bit hard to find by now, its on some obscure German label I think.
Also you should definitely check out a guy called Alexander Turnquist if this sort of thing hits the mark. -

more brilliance from these guys. that spacey, pastoral, Beach Boys feel that then whacks you in the face with a nice bit of 70s rock bombast when you least expect it!

Please!
2011 was a mess. It was started on Jan 2nd or something stupid, and the first 100 odd posts were all either about how stupid it was to start the thread so early or just speculating that X album coming out in 3 weeks time was going to be great. After about a week, sean went through it and deleted 90% of the posts to get it back on track.
2010's was obviously the best of the last 3 — though theShipment's original in 2009 was better still.
-
Bitch, please?
Fair point though, but after Sean sorted 2011 out it was good.
-
Saw them at SxSW this year
They were mightily impressive
-
the Strokes - Comedown Machine
some of it sounds like a giant Transformer robot having a little cry. pretty much all of it sounds awesome.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs — Mosquito
I'm going to call it after one listen. Some great textures; I absolutely love the rap on Buried Alive.
While I'd be surprised if I ended up liking this more than It's Blitz, I expect it to settle comfortably into 2nd spot in the next "rank the Yeah Yeah Yeahs albums" thread.

Nice to see HGM getting more recognition. Probably my favourite Americana act of the past couple of years. http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/17819-hiss-golden-messenger-haw/

New sound, new members. Dark, psychedelic with elements of French pop and great melodies. Extremely polished. I think it's awesome.

Mentalease — Living Dream
Self-described as "alternative ambient shoegaze bedroom pop dream pop nostalgic", i.e. the kind of stuff I like. Parts have the sound of a laid-back "Today Forever" period Ride, while other parts remind me very much of "Leaves Me Blind" era Underground Lovers (esp. the b-sides), though I don't expect many to get that reference. We're talking chorusy, top-end distorted guitars, with a touch of Matt Walker-esque slide guitar adding a bit of flavour.
There's also a couple of tracks on there that sound so much like The Radio Dept. that I had to check to make sure I hadn't accidentally added a couple of their tracks to the album playlist. This is a VERY good thing in my book, but it may leave the originality-junkies dissatisfied. My only complaint is that it could do with a bit more bottom end. I have to jam my earphones in hard to hear the bass.

Giant Drag - Waking Up Is Hard To Do
Last remember these guys in the NME about 7 years ago and thinking 'ooh they look edgy' but never actually bothering to listen to their music...but this new one is really cool! Sort of random garage-y stuff...check it!

Really good and enjoyable Scandinavian Folk music Electronica album. Well worth the 1 quid odd DL price.

A proper party-style album from Clutch - loads of riffs, strutting southern-rock 'n roll destruction and awesome vocals from Neil Fallon. GET ON IT

great record
he sounds so cut up. I love him.

The Men - New Moon
Really really liking this. Kind of similar to Open Your Heart. Fuzzy / nostalgia / country-infused Southern rock.

It's lovely. Just don't pay too close attention to the lyrics. They're not his strong point.

Purling Hiss - Water on Mars
really going to be confronting for longtime fans this, because they've gone and written some Dino Jr/Husker Du tunes. I just heard the first few tracks for the first time, love it so far!

this it's incredible
got it yesterday FINALLY and must have spun it about 6 times already
-
Bill Ryder Jones - A bad wind blows in my heart
Pleasantly surprised by this. I enjoyed what I heard of his instrumental score work a couple of years ago, but this is more conventional singer/songwriter stuff. Really good songs, and the production has a great feel to it. It's on spotify too.

Keaton Henson - Birthdays
Took me a few listens to get into it vs his debut, but has devoloped into a truly stunning record.
Not for when feeling low, unless you are a wallowing masochist like me. -
this is so stupidly good
they are like all the classic American punky indie bands i love. Gonna have to buy this
-
I'm enjoying this as well, thanks
although it looks like it's a 2012 release?
-
Enjoyed it but they based on their EP they could have
made a much more interesting, less derivative record.

Donovan Wolfington - self-titled
pure summery pop/punk/emo/shouty goodness. They're kind of the natural heirs to Algernon Cadwallader, but probably a more versatile band.

I enjoyed Kiss Each Other Clean at the time but I rarely return to it now, so I wasn't expecting to be that blown away by this.
-
Colin Stetson- New Hostory Warfare Vol. 3- To See More Light
Every reason you loved the last record and then some. Stetson is able to draw strange new textures and so much feeling out of one instrument it really floors me sometimes. 'Brute' has seen him never more aggressive in my opinion and he's never soared so high than in the track 'To See More Light'. Great record.

Panda Riot - Northern Automatic Music
Think it will be "the best non MBV shoegaze" record of the year. Reminds me of Mahogany and Swirlies, and like Ringo Deathstarr's Mauve of last year, excels by having 'actual songs'.
-
Merchandise - Totale Nite
Last year's Children of Desire was one of my fav records as this looks to be one of my top records of this year. Post punk with Morrissey style vocals, this record is more experimental than previous stuff an all

Mikal Cronin - MCII
His first, self-titled, album was fantastic. Is this one as good? Not sure yet, but early impressions are very favourable.

Its full of awesome power pop songs - perfect for summer. Check them out if you like Teenage Fanclub, Camera Obscura e.t.c. Actually, before anything, listen to Friday Night Lights (their debut) as it is one of the best records of the last 5 years (in my opinion). Such an underrated band.
-
Still Corners - Strange Pleasures
Pretty damn lush and beautiful. Has a bit of a Chromatics vibe balanced with a more xx-y vibe. Really, really into this right now.
-
Public Service Broadcasting - Inform - Educate - Entertain
Does what it says on the tin, taking samples from old public service films and melding them with various styles of music. Works fantastically well and put a big smile on my face. Sense they may suffering from diminishing returns in future if they stick to that aesthetic but for now I'm just heartily enjoying it.
-
Primal Scream - More Light
I've not enjoyed a Primal Scream album for over a decade, and had pretty much written them off. But this has totally taken me by surprise. Skronking saxes, blood-pumping tunes, great production and just the right sharpening of edges. Superb. So glad to have them back.

-
Las Supper - Back to the Future
Vintage soul, R&B and funk featuring Big Daddy Kane on MC duties.
-
Dirty Beaches - Drifters/Love is Death
Alan Vega meets Twin Peaks
-
Daft Punk - Random Access Memories
Someone had to, right?
I really like it. Wasn't too sure on my first couple of listens but the sooner you can accept that it a.) isn't another Discovery and b.) is impossible to live up to the amount of hype stuffed on it by the marketing/promo, it's a treasure-chest of a record underneath.
I'm particularly looking forward to all the chart bandwagoners picking it up, being completely baffled at the lack of 'club bangers', slating it, and going back to listen to Rudimental's album.
A bit of context: I don't really care whether it's a Daft Punk record or not because I've no particular investment in Daft Punk either way. I thought some of their tracks were pretty good in the past but I would never go as far as claiming myself a hardcore fan or anything like that. I thought the single/album was ridiculously well marketed. So, I wouldn't call myself a product of the 'hype'. I just happen to think it's a nice 70s/80s throwback with some very interesting tracks in there. Certainly not what I was expecting.

Standish/Carlyon - Deleted Scenes
they of the defunct Devastations, sexy dark brooding stuff, a touch of 80s/90s slo jam R&B at time. a hint of HTRK (a lazy comparison i know), worth checking out

Dettmann & Wiedemann / DIN / Henrik Schwarz - MASSE
Such a strange proposition - a lot of Berghain related producers coming together to score a ballet, but the whole thing is totally engrossing from start to finish. Beautiful, creepy, odd, weird, atmospheric... incredible stuff!
